RD600 first look and general questions

Guys, the NB really runs hot. If you have poor case cooling, NB temps gets up to 80C. I've tested on an open bench (28C room temp) with/without a 120mm case fan facing towards the mobo and here are my results based on the stock volt, stock NB heatsink&TIM:

With Case Fan:
Idle: 54ºC | Load: 57ºC

No Case Fan
Idle: 82ºC | Load: 84ºC

For an 80nm chip and at only 1.28V, I think RD600 outputs quite a lot of heat. The stock heatsink gets way too hot without case cooling and it stays hot for about 5-10 minutes even after shutdown. I had to wait a few minutes to remove the NB heatsink as it was too hot to touch. My max bootable with the stock NB heatsink was around 490FSB.

Currently testing with a Thermalright HR-05 and NB temps dropped by about 10ºC. I'm getting around 50ºC (w/case fan) and 74ºC (w/o case fan). I strongly suggest swapping out the NB heatsink as soon as you get the board. Will try out higher FSB with HR-05 installed ;)

is this with a new retail mobo...Bulldog14 ..earlier said there were some issues with the HS flatness on early review boards...also some have huge amounts of thermal paste

Bulldog14 said the reatil boards should have a load temps in 40s if I recall his post correctly(now overclocked and increased volt is something else of course)

Remove the heatsink and remove the padding around the perimeter. Your heatsink is not making correct contact with the chipset. This was a problem with some early boards. Also, they might have used too much paste. Contact DFI and get them to send you a new heatsink.

I'm testing prime95 v25.1 2x thread load @9x400FSB = 3596mhz at 1.4v on ICFX3200 with 60x25m sunon 23.5cfm maglev fan on stock NB heatsink with pad removed and AS5 on NB chipset and NB temp is 47C in 31.1C room temp :) NB core volt = 1.47v in SG display. My ICFX3200 is early retail board sample.

Yes, this was with the new retail mobo. Actually, almost all retail boards that I've seen have a lot of thermal paste on the NB. NB HS flatness could not be an issue.. looks flat to me.

To achieve load temps at 40C depends on room temp and case setup. Mine was 57C at 28C room temp, but this was with a 120mm fan blowing towards the mobo (from above the CPU socket). It only got over 80C when I had no fans whatsoever around the mobo. Note that the CPU was water cooled.

Gary, If the HS had poor contact with the NB, the HS wouldn't get that hot at all. In my experience, the HS got quite hot. This shows that there was "good" contact with the chipset. If it had poor contact, the HS wouldn't get warm at all. Anyways, swapping to HR-05 gave me 10C better in most cases but it did get around 70C when I turned off the case fan. This was mainly because the CPU was water cooled and the mobo had no airflow over it.

So, IMO the RD600 can get quite hot in a worst case scenario without no air flow over the mobo. Water cooled CPU must have better case cooling or a dedicated fan over the NB.

curious are you blowing air in over the radiator or sucking out

I have a P180 with PA160 in the front with air blowing in over the mobo...as well as a 120mm fan over PWMIC area on my DFL SLI DR..going to try and put a fan on the hS and see what happens when my board get hear this week

In an open bench, does it matter? Besides, the rad is about two feet away from the CPU. Using Corsair Nautilus500 btw...
As I've posted earlier, I tested the NB temps in two scenarios; one with no airflow and another with airflow. Hope you guys understand... :)

NB load temps with airflow was 47C, and 73C without airflow. Pictures with a standard 120mm case fan facing towards the CPU socket for airflow, which simulates a well cooled casing.

PCModding, did the retention clip to hold HR-05 on chipset you are using come with the HR-05 or did you have to make one? From pic I cannot tell.

Has anyone had any luck running ram in sync mode ? Mine wont boot at all using sync mode.

Thanks OldGuy and Devious, I am not having any real chipset temp issues...but prepared is better than just plain puzzled. Since I am on water, I think will look for a 70mm fan for HR-05 when I got that route.

I have run Synch Mode on two or three different Ocz ram types. I usually Load Optimized and then set SynchMode so that other changes do not throw me off when running in that mode. RGone...

For Arctic Silver 5 on my c2d cpu ...should I really just put a small line of it down the middle like the instructions say? Or should I smear it all over the top like I usually do for other compounds and other cpus...using a spatuala type of thing?

The HR-05 fits perfectly, no mods required. The included clip works as it should...
Anyways, the HR-05 can run passive provided you have decent airflow over your mobo.

just ordered mine today, cant wait to see some vmods start popping up. gonna put dice on this baby eventually. I got this and my ballistix ddr2-1000, now i need a cheap e6600 ;)

Have any luck making a disk clone (Norton Ghost) with RAID 0? I get into Ghost in DOS (SB600 RAID 0) and I can see the RAID but when I select it as the "source" to clone to another harddrive Ghost locks up. Never had this happen with Ghost in the past.

I want to make a clone before I start messing with all the tweaks :)
Any help is appreciated.

it's Ghost issue... similar with Acronis Trueimage doesn't recognise disks on ICFX3200 controller as yet.

I haven't tried it yet but make Trueimage boot media disk or Ghost boot disk and move your os hdd over to another rig and attach main os hdd and spare hdd to other rig and use cd to clone drive and move back over.

no probs with Trueimage v9 and v10 with my Asus 680i Striker .. only seems to be for RD600 since it's so new that software developers probably don't even have access to RD600 yet.

Acronis will want $39.95 for the 10.2 update that includes full support for the SB600. ;) I spoke with them yesterday until I was blue in the face about adding full support for the SB600 since new boards are shipping with it now and will continue throughout the spring (690G boards all have SB600).

With Acronis I had some problems

I was able to Clone my array to a single IDE,

But was unable to Clone from the single IDE to the Array or a single drive

Stick it on an sata/ide card and access it that way?

or Smart Gaurdian?

Smart G, is reading about 10c higher on the core.

coretemp is only real accurate app. but use SG for showing voltages :)

That is pure BS...not to mention Acronis 10 is not be as stable of a product from their forums as version 8..seems to have gone downhill from there

I just ordered the RD600 and have ordered these WC parts:

D-Tek fuzion WB 1/2"
MCR 220 Radiator 1/2"
2xLaing DDC Plus 1/2"
Masterkleer 7/16" tubing

I need help picking the NB and GPU WB.

The DD Maze4 and the EK-NF4 Rev. 1.1 (will this even work) seems pretty decent for NB WB.

The AquaExtreme MP-1 GPU looks good for the GPU WB.

What do you guys think?

I would personally choose a Swiftech MCW-30 for the NB and an MCW-60 for your GPU.

Petras has pics of both the MCS-30 and the 975 Maze4.

The pics of the MCW-30 show a retention bracket that hooks to the four NB MB loops.

The Maze4 has a 975 version of the NB WB customized for the Badax which also has hooks.

Has anyone tried either of these WB for the NB?

the thread is alreaady fifty pages of crap about this mobo, i dont see any reason why we cant discuss watercooling in it. (watercooling this specific mobo that is)

then there would be no need for any of the other threads, and everyone would talk about all aspects of PCs in one thread, using the arguement that its about PCs, so there for it belong here.

It would lead to a big headache.

Been testing with a pair of HyperX PC2-9200 kit on RD600 and just couldn't seem to get them to operate at 575MHz. I checked the heatspreaders and it had Micron D9GKX ICs inside. Couldn't even do 550MHz at 5-5-5.

Previously had no issues doing 575MHz with OCZ FlexXLC though. So the board is really picky with RAM and you have to re-tune it when swapping out RAMs.

anyone use'n a hsf with the push pin clamping system like the stock intel hsf?

My TT BTvx bent the :banana::banana::banana::banana: out of my motherboard:eek: . Literaly to the point where my standoffs wouldnt line up with the motherboard holes if i installed it off my motherboard tray. Aparently when installed the tabs toed in when the the bracket flexed, this toe in combined with the clamping force on the motherboard was cause'n it because of the proximity to the outer edge of the board. I found this very unacceptable so i machined up a backplate today for it to straighten things out. And i had heard that the vx didnt apply enough clamping pressure:slapass:

If you are use'n a hsf with the stock style clamping system I suggest you take a look at the top edge of your board and check. After 4 days of use my motherboard had a very noticeable bend in it sitting on my bench with nothing installed on it. Made me very very uncomfortable.

My d9gkx is stuck around ddr1000 too, using cellshock, runs fine at stock cas 4, but oc'ing at higher cpu mhz limits ram to around ddr1000, for orthos blend that is. I will try my Crucial kit next, though that's a cas 3 kit that maxes out at around drr1000 anyway. I will see if it performs cas 3 better than the Cellshock though. Also I'm finding trc needs to be loose for orthos blend at higher cpu mhz, over 30 in fact. I am trying to toy with the preamp drive strengths now using 2t. There's so much to test on this board, finding the best overall performance point will certainly take a while...

yea, scared the :banana::banana::banana::banana: out of me when i seen how bad it got. I noticed it flexed a lil when i first installed it but it was really bad this morning when i looked. Thing is ive never used the 86cfm fan that came with the VX. I could have saved myself $10 and had the factory bolt through kit that comes on the original big typhoon.

wow, seems many people has Cellshock memory around here, I have the same kit as raju and I hope I don't have same problems, what results did you get Alonso?

I think this board needs another type of tweaking for D9GKX, or maybe it dislikes D9GKX. I've just tested my OCZ PC2-8000 Ti Alpha VX2 2x1GB D9GMH kit and it does 500MHz at 4-4-4-12-2T w/o any errors. Swapped it out back for the HyperX PC2-9200 D9GKX and memtest errors out. So if the FlexXLC PC2-9200 were really based on D9GMH, it could be true that the RD600 has issues with D9GKX. I couldn't even get the HyperX PC2-9200 to run at spec.

However, I could run the HyperX PC2-9200 (single stick) at 577MHz and both stick passed memtest at 577MHz. Drop in both sticks and it errors out, at over 525MHz, no matter what timing I applied.

the flex xlc sticks are using the D9GMH chips. i have a set and have removed the water cooling blocks.

which test does it error out in memtest and what's you're settings in bios ? you can use my bios template http://i4memory.com/showthread.php?t=3581 to provide the details :)

Anyone having trouble with their board freezing on warm reboots. My board has been perfectly stable so far, however, when I reboot, the system freezes, and I get a C1 error on the LED indicator. Any ideas?

I get the C1 error if i push the mem to hard and end up going the one stick method for a restart. Some times i will need to use a ps2 keyboard and mouse just to get a post.

Hmm my RAM isn't OCd at all; I can't even seem to OC it at all without a C1. My KB is PS/2.. mouse is USB though, but I really don't think that should have anything to do with OCing. I'm pretty sure this warm boot thing is just a BIOS bug-Too bad DFI street is gone.

Hmm my RAM isn't OCd at all; I can't even seem to OC it at all without a C1. My KB is PS/2.. mouse is USB though, but I really don't think that should have anything to do with OCing. I'm pretty sure this warm boot thing is just a BIOS bug-Too bad DFI street is gone.

thx for the info, I am using my crucial ballistix 533 3-3-3-12 kit now, at ddr 700 1T as a starter. The D9GKX works fine at stock spec, though overclocked it does not seem to be able to hit cas 4 ddr1000 async..

Are you able to achieve better overclocked cpu/ram mhz with D9GMH in Orthos blend?

well if high freq. D9GKX doesn't work (yet), try testing it 1:1 to see what latencies you can get, with both 1T or 2T, maybe you can even get better performance then with 600MHz, though I hope this problem will be solved, maybe it's just a certain BIOS version?

eva2000 did you use GKXs with the RD600? or any other tester, RGone maybe? what are your results?

On this board I'm finding I can run far higher than orthos blend without issue 100-200mhz at least, occt seems closer to my 24/7 point, so I am working on 4 hour runs from now on in. I am testing cas 4 with occt atm ddr1000 or so, but not using d9gkx, that will follow.

well I came down 100mhz or so to see if I could pull up the whole system speed by going 9x multi and over ddr1100 cas 4 as bingo/eva said, so far with cellshock, I will see how long it lasts at 2.46vdimm.. I guess that's the only way to near 975 performance clock for clock..

thnx eva, just one more question: do you think it's better to run memory when OCing (on this board) at 1:1 with tight latencies, or go asynch. on memory freq. with loosened timings?

Well, the stock for HyperX D9GKX is PC2-9200. For some reason, it passed memtest at 577MHz 5-5-5-15-2T just now. Weird...will let it Blend later.

all depends on

1. Your max memory clocks at 1:1 tight latencies and async max looser i.e. 4-4-4-4-4 - for me tightened 556mhz 4-4-2-4-4 2T was slightly faster than 475mhz 4-4-2-3-4 1T..

2. the advance sub timings for tRCDW, tRC, tRFC, tRRD and tWR and what you set them as ...

Using 12/22 official bios decided to check out high FSB clocks by dropping multi from 9x to 7x and clocking FSB up to 502FSB. My ICFX3200 is retail early sample, removed NB's white foam spacer, reapplied thin layer of AS5 under stock passive NB heatsink. Added 60x38mm Sunon 23.5cfm MagLev fan over the NB.

NB Load temp = 51-55C at 1.76v bios set NB volts in 31.8C room temps open desktop bench rig running Prime95 v25.1 blend.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's exactly the same pair of sticks he has (Ti Alpha 8000) but instead of rating them for 4-4-4 8000, these are 5-5-5 9000.

AMD System Manager doesn't work for me and I've tried a couple PLL's in Clockgen but none work :(

What is the safest way to remove thermal paste from the NB pcb(not the core)

wish I could take a pic of the thermal application on my NB...what the hell is DFI doing :slapass:

They must have used an entire tube of compound...there is more paste surrounding the chipset than on it... :stick:

In fact several small caps(?? is that what there are are completely covered by the thermal paste..guess it is not conductive)

what is the safest way to remove the thermal compound?

can I use 70% alchol(please do not recommend 99%..can find it anywhere)

do I use Artic cleaner?

Jeez...no wonder temps are way off for some people..no way there is good heat transfer

I used the 2 part arctic cooler kit...wait till you take a look at the pwm HS. Took me a good hour and 30+ q-tips to get both areas clean. Check the surface on the NB HS. Mine was convex across the width. I just finished lapping it but I'm stuck here at work updating a couple of rigs. I had an 80mm 22cfm fan stuck to it with some heavy duty two sided tape. Worked well enough...temps in the mid 50's with 1.66v. Now that it's lapped I'll be attaching a 70mm with 41cfm so I expect it run a little cooler now...

totally agree. I looked at it to see if it was going to be okay and was like... WTF!? I should've taken a pic before I took it off. Some cotton got stuck on it because instead of taking a little bit I was like there's way too much and just took a paper towel with a bit of alcohol and removed most of it. Some of it is still there was I was lazy. The core is done with only a tiny bit of Arctic Silver. Not even a number so I'm guessing 1.

I placed a tiny bit of AS5 on the core and used a plastic baggy to spread and make a very thin layer ..like on do on my gpus

I cleaned off the TIM from the ceramic and resistors best I could...it was like a huge wad of gum....

yea it was already in my case and taking out my mobo tray was a pain so I left it there.

Has anyone tried the Buffalo Firestix on this board yet? I was reading a thread on club-dfi that certain ram won't work on the board. If the firestix don't work, I'll probably try this Patriot ram since it's rated to work at 1.8.

I've been roaming this board for a little while now and I just wanted to thank Tony, Raja, RGONE (names that come to mind now), and everyone else for making my decision to go with this board so easy.

I've had it now for a couple of days and absolutely love the immediate stability out of the box--pay attention ASUS/Nvidia--and its clean layout :woot: !

I should be getting my 2 Gig sticks of Patriot PC8500 back from an unfortunate RMA on monday and then its off to a 4 GHz OC on my x6800, hopefully........

Brisbane is just too hot for even Tuniq 120 Tower air cooling, so swapped in my trusty Corsair Hydrocool 200EX water cooling unit (1/4" OD tubed). The Hydrocool 200EX doesn't have LGA775 mount kit as it's a s478 era cooler. But thanks to Tuniq 120 Tower backplate and mounting screws and Thermaltake Big Typhoon mount bracket and ramsinks I can continue to use Corsair Hydrocool 200EX :)

As you can see room temp today was currently 29.5C with a peak of 37.6C and that is with 1HP portable air con turned on :eek:

origional cpuid.com clockgen worked for me....
just read the clockgen IC on your mobo's codes..
Franks clockgen has a model setup only 1 digit away from mobo IC and that wasn't even the latest version...
it worked fine for fsb overclocking on RD600

Do you think the PCI clock is at that speed? I can´t see any option in bios to leave it at 33,33Mhz like in P5W DH, so maybe.

By the way, I see some talk about the OCZ FlexX may be having some issue on this board? I have mine set up as we speak with an E6600 @3.6ghz (1.5v) using FlexX (air cooled) running at full speed with its rated timings just fine.

Ok, gonna ask this AGAIN... Has anybody tried the OCZ ATI cert memory on this board yet??? Since its a "Crossfire" board, and thats what the memory was touted as working on the best...:rolleyes:

This is not primestable. I'm not willing to push further, even with watercooling, I don't wanna push my NB over 1.8V. This is just supposed to be an example of how GTL is able to improve Kentsfield overclocks :)

My findings:

- As mentioned earlier, VTT and GTL are the key for 400+ FSB with Kentsfield
- FSB 400 needs about 1.66V
- Raise GTL together with VTT
- Playing with the FSB I/O Strengths might help
- My GTL settings are not necessarily the best for your Kentsfield. Again, every CPU might react different.
- A tiny bit too much voltage (especially GTL voltage) results in instability and crashes. Increase them step by step.
