I kind of doubt it's IO related.. hrm... but stranger things have happened.. I know there was a rumor about nforce4 nvraid IO file corruption issues for a while.. only on certain motherboards.. like the msi neo4 plat sli.. anyways..

I would leave your mch at 1.55v at least.. and hard set your pci-e frequency at 100mhz.. those two are known to for sure improve stability at 400mhz fsb speeds.. maybe try some -full- 24 hour dual prime validation tests would be prudent to make sure the cpu and mem are happy at current vcore/vdimm.. just rule those out for good..

My final OC:

e6700 @3.5 Ghz 1.55v (350 FSB)
Corsair Value Ram: 1:1 4-4-4-12 @ 700Mhz 2.1v
Can't do 3.6 even with 1.6vcore...

My Core Temps are ~50C idle and ~70C load
PC Probe II says my CPU is 27C idle 35C load

my e6700 is a week 27.... I think I got a crappy one since I expected @ ~3.7-3.9

If you mean the cold booting instead of warm booting thing, it still does that with 1407.

heat indeed, my e6700 is 36 idle and 51 load.
But most e6700 are bad overclockers.
Mine wil never go past 380x10, stable at 360x10, i can lower the mp but then fsb increase isn't much, so cpu speed is still lower.

That's coretemp speed.
Tends to be pretty normal for people to average 65-70C load even with high end air cooling. I've found that the Intel TAT reports a bit lower temps than coretemp. Maybe about 4C at load, *however* identical temps at idle (huh?).

Happens even with lapped heatsinks.

I think the only way to reduce temps like that is to lap the heatspreader, but you can say byebye to your warranty. (and most people buy retail chips for the 3 year warranty, otherwise people would just buy OEM if they didn't care about that).

Yeah I know that heat is what's holding me back. I'm using a lapped Scythe Infinity and a lapped IHS... up to 2000 Grit and a razor blade amount of AS5.

Its definitely my shizzy chip :(
too much voltage early on. Fails Prime 95 @ 1.5x (instead of 1.55) after 1 hr.

don't use a razor blade amount of AS5 ! No wonder you have such high temps! Air bubbles galore ?

go to the as webpage and read carefully on how to apply it, and then follow those instructions carefully.

I run various tests with a PC RTS game (Dawn of War) I am testing and normally the game would die during the 1st round OR during the 2nd. Now it never dies with the above while keeping my original specs I want. Orthos still dies after 2mins but other benchmark apps work fine.

Edit.. have downclocked the video card to stock.. so I lose about 1-2 fps.. shesshh. Better to have system stability then the damn thing dropping to desktop every 15-30mins.

Still.. VERY happy with the specs above.. been running for now a month doing various tasks and its solid. Still.. always watching and waiting.. :rolleyes:

just thought id mention that in the latest 1407 bios under advanced -> chipset, you can now chose whether youre using vista for the hd-audio encoder :/

not sure what it does just thought id mention it.

1407 doesn't seem worth updating too.. Asus still has not added the key overclocking tool which the P5B has which unlocks all Conroes. I'm running 1401 and its fine for now. COME ON ASUS! Get with the P5B = P5W DH program and synch the bioses. P5W DH is your flagship. MAKE IT SO! ;)

Yes, absolutely. Though, you may want to go for a 2GB kit if you're a gamer.

hey,

me again ... getting a step closer to my solution. right now i am doing my tests on a stoneage IBM DTLA 46gb pata drive, which is connected to the 3rd sata port of the intel controller via a pata-sata converter. and guess what? i am doing my 5th build run in a row now and had no errors so far. running 8x400mhz @ 1.3875 Vcore in Bios. on my samsung raid0 array i would have had 2 crashes while building for sure now.
next thing i am gonna do is check the samsungs with a dos tool and also change their sata cabling.
still no one here who might be running raid0 on a heavily overclocked system to confirm or deny my raid0 problems?

unlock all conroes? does this also include e6400 allendale? or real "conroes" only?

The 1407 bios DOES unlock the multi but only downward, only the x6800 and a few ES's are truly unlockable (up & down).

I have 2 seagate 200gbs in raid 0 and a maxtor 16mb on sata4

3.5ghz, 1.6v no raid problems

Temp 1 is the mobo, i am positive on this
Temp 2 for me is the CPU, i know this also
temp 3 I have no idea. Its hanging around 42c now, but maybe a month ago it used to be like 80-120c on idle and would fluctuate randomly. But now all of a sudden its like 40-60c. And sometimes it will increase when CPU increases in temps, but it doesnt always.

and do u have like Shutdown when u restart in windows and then back on when u go above 320FSB ?

Well, since my IHS and infinity are so flat, the more I add the less contact between the 2 surfaces... kinda like filling in a flatland as opposed to a mountain range.

Any one think my logic is flawed?

To rephrase: "the more you lap, the less AS5 you should use"

Your logic has nothing to do with how you apply the AS5.
It's true that the more you lap the less you need, but you still need to apply the dab. Just a slightly smaller dab instead. It still has to spread out so the core part that radiates the heat directly to the Heatsink is covered.

Trust me.

DO NOT spread AS5 on a IHS !
It does NOT matter how flat it is !!!
Air bubbles *WILL* get trapped when you apply a surface to another one covered with AS5.

By applying the "rice dab" method, in the middle, it starts in the middle then gets squeezed out by pressure evenly. And since the CPU die is in the middle of the IHS......well... the part that needs the contact gets it----without air bubbles.

The outer perimeter of the IHS is inconsequential. Virtually no heat transfer occurs there.

Now, applying AS (ceramique is safer) to the southbridge is a different story, as the chip covers the entire surface; there the 'dab' method won't work.

PC-5300/PC-5400 (DDR2-667) is fast enough unless you plan to significantly overclock.

I too put vCore to 1.60v, following the lead - not as brave.

Core Temp Beta temps are 48/47 C right now on air.

That's been the only way to get me past 3.2GHz in BIOS.

I assume you meant 1.85vmch? All of the older boards should have 1.65vmch but only those with serial 68MOAG will be 1.85vmch. Also below the ram slot it should be atleast 0628

my 1.85v mch board ran no hotter than my 1.65v mch board even when overclocking. My 1.65v version could pi @ 420-422 FSB and 3DMark up to 412FSB. My 1.85v could pi up to 440 FSB with stock "9" multiplier & 450 FSB with "8" multiplier & 3DMark06 up to 423 FSB.

Interesting, my 1.85v board runs (or reports at least) 4-5 degrees higher than my 1.65v - at same settings, same CPU, same cooler and fan etc.

hi guys,
well, i have like cpu with bad mojo or i'm just doing something terribly wrong. i got e6300 on p5b dlx with 2x1gb of goodram, 7600gt and a wireless card. the thing is i just can't get any serrious speed out of this thing now that i got oc. the last stable speed is at 330fsb, i tried like everything. got the bios stuff like in that thread, i'm runing 1:1 with ram which i think is not the problem since i had them runing stable at 500ddr, put the vcore to 1.4, cpuz reads like 1.352, bumped up the other voltages too, temperatures are nice since i got big typhoon cooling the thing, disconected everything i don't need in bios which is 0507, i could upgrade it but thisone should do it too. i can't get even 1m of pi at >335 fsb, the last idea i had was just to give it more juice but then that is quite high so i first decided to ask here what to do if anyone can do magic or i'll just have to settle for puny 2310mhz. thanks for all the help.

You're using 0507 ?? Does that even -support- C2d ? I thought you had to have 701 -minimum-.

Flash it to 1305. That version is trouble free for everyone, just use the ezflash in the bios.

And the only reason you're limited to 333 fsb is because I bet you didn't disable hyperpath 3. Disable that.

asus support really sucks...seems P5WDH is dead already, im still waiting for the resolution of SPD bug at +370fsb (tRFC related)

The 1407 BIOS locks up my machine, and while I was asking ASUS support if they'd look into the problem (I'm back to 1305) I mentioned the changelog issue. I was told that it was "probably proprietary information" about the changes, and my suggestion for details was likely to be ignored.

This is the "P5W DH" problem and fixes thread. There is a similar thread for your "p5b dlx". Perhaps the monitor will move this.

yeah, that was my mistake, sorry about that, anyway i fixed the problem, it apperars it was the bios that was causing problem, so for now i'm runing 370x7 with 0711 bios and have no problems. gonna continue with oc tommrow. thanks anyway.

For those using the 1.85 Mch boards, particularly those that have tries 1.65 Mch in comparison to 1.85 Mch boards.

You all keep saying that you have better OC results with the 1.85 Mch boards. Are you getting better OC at the same Mch settings (implying the 1.85 Mch boards are actually more stable) or are you only getting a better OC as a result of using the settings above 1.65 Mch???

In my experience the boards overclock exactly the same - the higher than 1.65v only helps if you are pushing the FSB above 430 FSB or so.

Given that my 6400 and 6600 are limited by the CPU - (heat and vcore walls) I can't tell you - they are running at 389 and 420 FSB.

I have some problem though with my older USB devices...:(
After installing Windows XP SP2 and all the drivers I shutdown the computer and turn the power off.
When I turned it on again it stop responding...
After the windows logo was gone it just stay blank...

after I tried to unplugged all the USB Devices and restart,
everything just fine,the windows start normally...

All the driver is already updated (or some of them is just windows driver)

here are my USB devices list:
1. Canon D660 USB Scanner
2. BAFO B120 Infra Red Dongle
3. HP 3900 Series USB Printer
4. US Robotic 56k Fax Modem USB
5. Logitech USB Mouse
6. USB Hub
7. Gravis Gamepad Pro USB
8. Intel PC Camera (WebCam)
And of course the USB Device that came with the Motherboard,The InfraRed Dongle for the Remote, which is i think is useless :p:

What do you think is wrong ?

Why don't you try to disconnect the USB devices one by one to find out which one is causing the problem?

I've tried that but I found no device causing any problems.
Whenever I successfully enter Windows and try to plug some or all the USB devices and then restart the computer,everything is fine.

When I power off for a few seconds and on again (with some or all of the devices connected),i still get the same problem,blank screen after Windows logo disapear...no error msg...:confused:

Hi guys,

I have had this problem for awhile and I cannot seem to figure out what it is, hopefully you can help me!

Obviously I am using the P5W DH mobo currently on BIOS version 1305 (whatever) with a Core 2 Duo E6600, GeForce 7950GX2, 2GB GeiL 6400 RAM, Seasonic S12 600W PSU, Seagate Barracuda 300GB HDD. I have cleared the CMOS, already.

Now the problem happens randomly, sometimes it happens less to not at all but also more often then not (like recently). What happens is, when I boot the system after leaving it off for sometime (like overnight) it will sometimes startup, get all the fans running, HDD spinning etc.. but no signal will go to the monitor, there is no boot as the internal speaker stays silent and it'll sit there spinning away without booting until I unplug it from the mains power supply for a few seconds and then plug it back it and try again. Once I do this everything works.

As you can imagine this is quite annoying after awhile, can anyone think of what it might be?

Any help would be great, thanks.

My question here, and hello im a newbie over here :) is that i cant move the FSB over 350, i can OC with the Asus autooverclokc feature and i reached a nice 3000 mhz, though i want more from my E6600, just to make some benchies and stuff.

My rig is: P5w Deluxe, 2x1 GB OCZ gold (4-5-4-12), 2x80 gb sata, ati x1900xt and Intel core duo e6600.

I did move the voltage, t he mem volt also, i have readt a lot and seen pictures of similar computers with a higher OC (3.2, 3.4, 3,6 etc) and i do copy/paste to their settings and cannot seems to make it, i have readt that to move the FSB past 360 or so in these boards is a bit problematic, but i cannot find a way to do it, i had 1201 bios or something like that, though i flashed yesterday to the newone that Asus just released to see if something changed, but nothing happened..

Any help would be apreactiated, i tried to read all of this post but 50 pages is way a lot, i did read like 15 pages and found nothing to help my problem. Thanks in advance!

There are 4 ports on the back: the right two have some sort of 'restart the computer' logic attached to them, so if you plug into them the computer may act funny.

I used the two-plug USB connector (that goes in a card slot opening) they supplied, attached to a USB connector next to the PCI slots, as an internal 'hub' to feed a real USB hub in a 5-1/4 opening and a USB card reader in a 3-1/2 slot. You might want to use it in an open slot to get yourself another couple of no-strings-attached ports in the back.

If you already did that, maybe it's time to get another one since there are at least two internal USB connectors...

The board comes with it's own proprietry Infrared dongle, which has control to the power on/off function even without drivers installed. If you have your infrared dongle plugged into one of these usb ports that will be what's causing your problems. Try moving the IrDA dongle to one of the top usb ports ;)

This was fixed for me in 1407, make sure load defaults after flashing.

if hp3 is auto, then, at some point, p5w will disable it.. mostly :)
btw, did some testing with hyperpath3, compared mch configuration registers, both hp3 on and off.
the only thing i noticed different - was that when hp3 was on - tRD was set to 5. Normally p5w sets it at 6. and that was pretty much it.
maybe there's some additional hidden settings also which i believe/hope to be the case.

Yes, your right, they're the ones designed for the Asus proprietry IrDA dongle. I was saying not to use them if he's using a dongle other than the Asus one, and if it's not being used for the remote, because this might cause problems with the remote on/off feature of the board that's hard-wired to those usb ports.

I did try 1407 (wich is the latest bios right?) but still couldnt hit over 333 FSB if i move to 334 FSB the comp wont boot, and i did try a lot of options, hyperpath3 disable, cpu and mem volt bump, mch volt also, pci-e 100 or 101, etc, but i just cant make it over it :( right now i moved to another bios wich was supossed to be the best (1305) and still the same problem.... :(

Stick to 4-4-4-12-4 or 5-5-5-15-5 timings with sufficiënt voltage to your ram.
And try to run it at 1:1

Up to 435MHz I don 't need more than 1.55V vmch...
HP3 disabled, fancy PCI-e-:banana::banana::banana::banana: to disabled or "normal"...

Maybe post an everest-sensor-screen to see if all the temps are ok.

I got this board today, and quite honestly the SATA setup on this board is a bit confusing. I have 2x 200GB SATA WD's that I want to set up in RAID 0. I figure I should run them on the Intel controller for best performance, but which SATA connectors should I use? 1+3?
Then I have 2x 320GB SATA WD's that I want to use for storage, ie, no RAID. Which ports should I use for these? The EZ ports?

I am interested in the EZ-RAID ports too, but for another reason. I am running 3 WD2500KS drives striped together on ports 1,3 and 4. Port 2 is split between the 2 Sil EZ RAID ports. Now I have a SATA DVD Writer and wanted to use one of the EZ RAID ports, but it apears that you cannot run them in normal SATA mode. I Haven't had much time to play with the RAID1, RAID0, BIG jumper block, but I have a nasty feeling that they will make no difference, the SATA Writer pretty well gets picked up as an unknown device, so I have it running off the Jmicron controller. This works just fine but it slows bootup somewhat and Ideally I would like it on the SIL controller. Anyone else had this or got it working in the way I would prefer?

Cheers for that. Due to a complete lack of time on my part I hadn't got around to trying it. Also the new build is pretty 'compact' to put it mildly and involves major surgery to get to the jumpers lol. I simply assumed that JBOD mode would give much the same results as RAID1 and 0 mode. Was that test with a hard drive or a DVD writer though? Hopefully it will make no difference and I will try it when I return from home.

I'm new to building system, and I'm having the long boot time. It seems to take it's time at the looking for USB mass storage device part. I have updated to the lastest bios. Can someone just put it amature writing on how i should setup my bios so that it will boot up faster? I saw that someone says to changer sata header, what does that mean? Is this a hardware issue or just a bios setting?

The second ezraid port can only be used for ezraid, no matter waht you do.

I have 4 sata drives in raid 0, using 1 red, 2 black and 1 orange ezraid port.
The 5th drive is on the jmicron port near the backplane. the jmicron stuff is SLOW

I configured single sata to run on jmicron. To make it run at the correct speed, I had to configure as ahci and install jmicron raid driver.

I have 800 mhz OCZ memory, i did try volt bumping up to 2.2v and still cant reach over 3000 mhz (333 fsb x 9) not even on 1:1, 4:5 or 3:5 with autotimmings or 5-5-5-15 and 4-5-4-12 and nothing happens... i also moved the cpu volt 1.5 even 1.6 and still wont boot and give me the bios error after 2 resets...

Mem@2.05
FSB @ 1.2
MCH @ 1.65
ICH @ 1.2

Fsb is 388x9, and running on air.

I can't by the love of God get the damn Jmicron controller to recognize my last 320GB drive. As of now I use port 1+3 for RAID 0 on two 200GB drives. Port 4 for one 320GB drive, and port 1 jmicron for the last 320GB drive. Any suggestions?

When I first plugged into jmicron sata, I saw nothing in bios, but it showed up in windows like an external/removable drive and ran dreadfully slow. As stated a few posts ago, to make it work right I set jmicron to operate in ahci mode and installed jmicron raid driver. The drive still does not show in regular bios, but only in the jmicron post screen.

Nothing shows up in windows. And it doesn't show up in that jmicron boot screen either. If I set it to "AHCI", my PATA drive, which also runs of the jmicron controller disappears. Thanks for the suggestions though.
What are you running that jmicron jumper on?

This board truly has the most cluttered SATA arrangement I've ever seen. My previous DFI Ultra-D was pretty much plug & play.

Well, I got it working. The only way I can make it recognize the last 320GB drive is to connect it to the SATA port under the CPU. That's a pretty stupid place to place a SATA connector, no?
So, in effect, this motherboard can only run 4x SATA drives unless you want to run EZ raid? That's sort of weak.

I've had this board for a couple months now. My e6600 can do 3.24 Ghz (360 x 9) with all stock voltages (just disabled HP3) on air and stay quite cool (maxes out around 56C).

However, with any voltages increases, my CPU temps get too high too quick to justify the minimal performance gains. Setting CPU voltage to 1.4625 for example will increase my load CPU temps from 56C to 66C.

Does this type of temp increase sound normal?

Had a look at a new P5W DH at my local store yesterday, and it seems that there is no year/week code printed anywhere on the board. The label on the box cover is 69MOAG.

I used to have a 1.65V VMCH board and that board had the printing. The new one I saw yesterday had PCB MADE IN CHINA, couldn't remember what my board was though.

CPU power consumption increases as the square of the voltage times the frequency (V*V*F), so yes, this is to be expected.

wow people are not paying attention here.

The jmicron ports are the one behind the cpu near the back plane and on the BACK PLANE!

The EZraid ports are orange and near the top/bottom of the board, controlled by a SIL controller.

The orange ports (well one of them) can be used together woth the 3 ich7r ports for raid.

The jmicron ports can have by themselves but NOT with the other ports on the board!

I did some testing with 2 drives and got better raid 0 scores when useing 1 orange port together with the red boot port then with the red and a black.
So i don't think i have reduced performance by using f of the orange ports in my raid 0 setup of 4 drives.

With 4 drives in raid 0 i do not get twice the 2 drive score, quite a bit less. Which means there is a bottleneck somewhere which doesn't give me the full performance. But i get better scores then 4x 10k scsi disks on a lsi megaraid pci-x controller with 512mb cache on my previous tyan board.

So the ich7r is pretty good and worth the board's money in itself! (the lsi card costs 600 euro/dollar with bbu and mem!).

Problem is the jmicorn port near the cpu, you DO NOT want to use that one.
It's slow, needs special drivers which are hard to find and even then when under high load, the whole system get unresponsive.

To make thing clear:
for the ich7r you have a maximum of 4 ports available, these can be used in a raid (or several raids)
in total 6 ports are independantly available, but then 1 port is connected through the backplane!

the 7th port is ONLY available through ezraid, but when using this, only 3 ports are left available for the ich7r

I still have the problem :(
I don't use the InfraRed Dongle for the remote anymore
After some time I found out that the modem is the cause, but only if I turn off the power (after I successfully enter window)

If I just shut down and the UPS is still on, it just fine...
I think it may be a power issue with my modem or windows or may be the motherboard (I hope not the motherboard)

Can anyone help me with this?

yes you can.
I use one of the orange ports for my 4 drive raid 0

attach a drive to one of the orange ports.
Go into the ich7r raid setup during post
create a raid set (jbod?) with the 1 drive attached to the orange port
it should now show up in windows disk management
create a partition and format and you can use it.

I think you MUST create a 1 drive array to be able to use the single drive under windows but i'm not 100% sure.

At least you should see the drive under the ich7r post tool.

As soon as you use one of the orange ports through the ich7r, you can no longer use ez raid and the second orange port must remain empty.

i'm using the orange port closest to the edge of the board, but i think either will work
