ASUS P5B-Deluxe; Problems & Fixes

SpeedStep is underclocking mechanism , utilizing lower multiplier and lower voltage. Search WIKIPEDIA for better explanation.
For example, I run the cpu at defaults and ram at 4:5, A.I.Nos On, Sensitive +20% .
As I write this , CPU-Z shows my Voltage to be 1.128V , Core 1920 Mhz (best fit to 1860mhz), Multi x6 BUS 320 and RAM Frequency 400.
Because I set AINOS to sensitive , the sys reacts fast to any load, say Prime95, by changing the multi to 7 => Core Speed 2240, Voltage to 1.272 while ram stays as before.
Sometimes, depending on the kind of load, it would move to regular defaults i.e x7 ,1860, 266 , 320.

The idea of overclocking on demand isn't new. 8RDAVCORE implemented that long ago in a MUCH better way than Asus does ( not every client is XtremeOCer..) . you could set our own param vectors and delay. But the P5BD has a better ability of doing that because of a much better and precise PLL chip .

The problem is that there are so many settings that can influence stability/crashes. I really abhor this ..shiver

Your proccess is the basic one. Trial and error. But it made me start thinking more seriously about all this.. After all, Intel and AMD , do that too. It might be that binning the chips is something like this proccess. I wish there was something like what nVidia offers in its drivers.

By myself , I keep notes. Whats needed is a full Bios log, because you may find later that you missed one setting and by now you forgot how it was earlier..
From the results I make a graph http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/Graphing/ . What I need is something better, but simple to use. where I can input vectors and manipulate the outcome graph.
The Graph shows you what to expect, thus saving the abhorring .. chills

What I do is like this : try to RAM only, Graph , than CPU, Graph, than both, Graph. On top of that , I'm benching. 3Dmark , SuperPI , because I'm looking for the most returns for the investment. I'm not for OC for its own sake.

There must be an algorithm to all that , that can find faults and predict limits and sweetspots for different usage scenarios = show the performance envelope.

Nicks, several users have reported that 0614 is the bios that has no 1X PCIE issue. But 0604 in regards of stability, memory compatability and overall clockability of FSB is inferior to say 07xx,08xx or 09xx.

Some users said that flashing to 0614 then back to 0804, without loading defaults heplped, but manually setting all settings helped.

Yesterday I tried changing settings for microfon, beacuse it wasnt properly recognised from audio wizard. result, i got soundcard frozen, and enable to use in any program that initates sound. I couldnt close the soundmax panel either. After investigating with process explorer, i found out that the drivers of sound are diretly tied into kernel of windows. So any program I started that uses sound, lead to it being frozen just as soundmax control panel. So i couldnt even shutdown within windows. Cuase it was stuck in causality loop with windows part of windows kernel /registry. So I try to bring it down by closing handles and mutex and treads that are opened by soundmax. Result was BSOD with invalid kernel error, first I have ever seen from Windows ever. That is I think a reason why Windows works slower, has micro freeze ups, and boots a little slower. Beacuse of soundmax linking directly into kernel of OS, in a way leach links itself to the body. Any freeze up in soundmax, and that part of windows kernel is frozen too. So onboard sound is not crappy, its the software that is uber crappy. So if u find a way to get rid of it , do it without a shred in your mind.

moral of the story dont use onboard sound. anyways an audigy has much better sound quality and can be bought for a few $. why bother with onboard?

can you use speedstep with manula overlocking?i.e. can I go for my max overclock but set speedstep and therefore it will only apply the max overclock/higher vcore when the cpu is being 100% utilized? I guess you can but would it be stable like this?

also are you saying cpuz is showing you vcore accurately?it doesnt for me, its showing 1.063V for me while vcore is 1.32V in pcprobe(1.35V in BIOS).

Are there any advantages to official 0910 bios vs the beta 0910 That's been out for about a month? Or any real advantages to 1004?

Just flashed to 1004 with my previous settings for the hell of it, purely because i like to be up to date. all is good. :)

well guys...no answer so far.....how some people here can get fsb as high as 500 and i can't get passed 450 ??

Try higher NB voltage and also higher FSB termination voltage. Also set SB voltage to 1.60.

i did already. i tried even to set all these voltages to the max the board can give....still no go.
i could get a 460....but nothing over it..
it's weird...1mhz over that and the board won't boot...

Just as an interesting note, i have found that different CPUs seem to have different FSB maxes :(

My E6400 could happily boot up at 520 MHz. (using 6x multi)
My E6300 refuses to boot at anything above ~ 495 no matter what voltage.

This is with 0711 bios.

I just wish I could do 3..6 stable...that would be a 1.2ghz OC and that would be awesome hehe...
I can boot @400x9 but it's very unstable... currenlty I'm at 385x9 though and it's stable as a rock...

well...i'm booting fine at 3.6 ghz...but using 450 fsb. what i would like to do is to boot at 515x7 so i would get the same 3.6 but using my gskill pc800 at 515
With some tests i found out that it holds fine 530 mhz,.
unfortunaly the board won't pass 450...

My E6300 boots at 510x7.

tntgdh, maybe that's the limit for your CPU. Try lowering the multi to see what is holding you.

All C2D's have their own fsb wall and you wil probably reach that wall before you are even near the max a P5B dlx wil do (or any other 965 chipset board).

oh....but i lowered it...tried multi 7 and still no go.....the pc won't boot even in a smaller clock if i get a fsb higher than 460.


so ...maybe is my processor...well.....it's not bad the way it is...
but i really wish i could get that memory ate 515 =(

If your at max FSB cpu can do lowering multi wont do much. Ive tried 2 cpu's on same board/ram/settings/cooling. First did 510 dual 32M but not even 5 mhz more for 1M. Second one does better (550 air) but on the edge the difference between stable and benchable stays small, only a couple of mhz. Cooling makes a difference as wel, colder cpu = higher fsb. On air this one maxes around 550, with Mach 580.

well, I am about ready to get a ra on my asus p5b deluxe. Any suggestions
on what motherboard that would work with intel e6600 and corsair twin2x2048-6400 and geforce 7900gs ????

Is there a fix for the PCI-E x1 issue yet? I am on the 0804 bios with an E6400 at 401x7 at 1.4v and all board voltages set to auto and when I load CPU-Z it shows the bus link at 1x. Also it is orthos stable for 10minutes so far. thank you

there is some settings a couple of pages back on this thread. the real fix though is to get an nvidia and sell the ati. ;)

well an update. I am running Orthos at 3.216GHZ 402x8 1.4v but the issue is still there. I think it has to do with my board voltages being set to auto(anyone know a good 24/7 voltage for 450fsb? I also have a 7900GT if that helps.

I just put toghether a p5b deluxe with corsair ddr2 6400 ,bfg ge force 7600gt and when I try to fire it up I don't have no picture on the monitor.I can see the red light on MB.the fans run on CPU,videocard and i hear the HD runing.What can be wrong?The MB,VIDEO CARD OR the memory.
