NickS try this: on your BIOS, go and set your PCIe frequency to 90MHz. I had this *exact* same issue before, none of the solutions provided would actually fix it, only the power off/unplug cord/repower on would kind of solve it .. but the 1 long beep + 3 short beeps would never go away.

After I did that though never had an issue again. No more PCIe at 1x nor beeping of any kind. It might be a problem of some sort between Asus and ATI, something they ought to fight between themselves :D and leave us, users, out of their fights.

Hope this works for you till they release a damn BIOS that hasn't a handful of bugs...

Thanks freelancer. Great first post too. I just hope 10MHz loss on the PCI-E bus doesn't equate to a 10% performance decrease.

I'll report back in a few.

Yeah that worked terrible, and now XP won't load even at stock settings. Freezes half way throu booting. Boots safe mode though, figures.

Ok .. that's simply .. weird :eek: I mean .. worse case scenario it should make the system slower and more stable, not crash it :confused:

Hmm, I did change PCI-E setting from Normal to Faster but it sounds like 90MHz and my HDD didn't quite agree... or something to that extent.

It was odd. Safe mode would work ok, but even trying to boot regularly in "diagnostic mode" would freeze.

Using 0910 Bios with PCI freq set to 115 , X4 Mode Fast and PEG mode set to slower, i don't get the PCI-E 1x issue anymore :D

you are a brave man to keep it. i could never trust a board after the :banana::banana::banana::banana: i went thru with this p5b, and found out jsut how many people have the same issues. after seeing how commonplace it was, i couldnt wait to get my chip off of the baord.

i consider myself lucky because it happened within my return period. i feel bad for the poor mofos who had theirs conk out after 2-4 months and if mine started working again i sure as heck wasnt going to keep it and find out.

yes 1 notch.

cold boot issues are royal pain in the ass but at least it will always boot. and overclocking too high, can still switch psu off and then hold Insert key for safe mode. much better than the DFI 975x/g which when overclocked high had warm boot issues and only resolved by resetting CMOS. im glad I dont have to reset CMOS on P5B-D becuase they put the damn jumper right under the 8800gtx. anyone here getting clockgen to actually apply the settings?

just ran 8 hours dual orthos blend @ 480MHz, 485 next.
at what frequency does the strap come in and drop performance is it
401MHz?

400Mhz. Set 399 for 1066 strap.

yes but some people(one of them me) have been able to get a their memory sub-timings tighter after going from 0910 to 1004.

thanks. do you think though that say running 480MHz is faster than running 399MHz if overall cpu clockspeed and mem speed are the same? or will it always be slower due to the strap? is 1:1 faster on this platform? Before going conroe I was an AMD man and on their platform true synchronous wasnt possible so ive no idea.

i thought there was a 'fsb hole' between 360-399mhz, and we should set 400fsb(strap changes to 1333) for more stability? or is it better to set 399(1066 strap is it?)

Ok bios 0804 flashed to 1004 reboot, didn't post.

1. removed connectors 24, 8 pins
2. removed cmos battery
3. put cmos jumper on pins 2-3 for 1 hour
4. reconnected

Result - still wouldn't boot.

RVD...have you tried just using 1 stick of ram when you reboot?

Yes, I have 2x512 gskill hz. I have tried just one stick in both yellow slots, and 1 stick in both black slots, no luck so far. Will retry the 1 hour cmos jumper fix again.

I can conclude that 0711 sucks. Won't do 500FSB at all. 0804 I'm using atm. I like it best out of 0711, 0910, and 1004. Just feels the best.

man that sucks big time and also doesnt make any sense. only if there was a power failure during flash would that make sense.

I think when you UNDERCLOCK the PCI-E , u should keep the PCI manually at 33.

Just a reminder to everyone.
Shutting down PSU is best done by Taking the Wall Power Cable Out . Because the Mobo gets +5V at standby. I'm not talking about a quick On/Off.
The reason for doing that is to let Capacitors Discharge, So one should let the system recover overnight.

My opinion is that the mechanism of Auto Cold Reboot that happens after changing hardware setting in the BIOS , is problematic, and among others, causes the x1 PCI-E issue. It seems the proccess is not well timed, causing perhaps the PCI-E to be undervolted and to default to x1.
Perhaps changing BIOS settings one reboot by one reboot would help in ?

What exactly is speedstep, does it increase performance, and if so how do I turn it on/off? :rolleyes:
