ASUS P5B-Deluxe; Problems & Fixes

ok guys why does everyone think 500fsb is easy to get? i cant remember what my max fsb was but once i have backed up my hdd i shall share what i found.

i am thinking of going for a 680i board and going with nvidia sli.

or maybe the commando ... ? i could do with some form of quick cmos clear like on the abit boards.


what is this x1 stuff? i have yet to find out because my x1900xtx is awating RMA

all i know about this is that sometimes the pci-e slot will be in 1x mode? eh how do you find this out,? what does it look like in the bios

Anyone here pulled off teh southbridgecooler? I can't get that thing off.. It is like glued or something! Any tips for me? :)

490 is no problem on my board above that my e6600 hits a wall actually i had it running 485x8 for a while.

Still no luck with ps2 keyboard so if for some reason i loose bios settings i will have to rma = ( going for another board this time. perhaps abit IN9 32 Max

Is that safe to run 24/7?

When I use Asus Probe my cpu reports at a steady between 41 and 44 idle...
When I use Intel TAT CPU0 and CPU1 are always between 2 to 5 degrees off from each other and CPU0 is at 45 to 47 degrees... and CPU1 is at 42 to 44... Is this normal? Also TAT reports my CPU as a Pentium M?

Okay, so I have issues with my first P5B Dlx. This should describe the problems:

So I send the P5B Dlx in to be RMAed. I got a new one today. I set it up and it worked great. I set my moddest BIOS settings for my 24/7 overclock. It worked great, no problems. I played BF2142 for a few hours. Then, I decided I was going to try to increase my FSB from 400Mhz to 433Mhz. I increased the CPU Vcore to 1.50V, memory to 2.4V, NB to 1.60V. I pressed F10 to save and exit. The BIOS froze there and did nothing. After a few minutes, I manually restarted the computer. And guess what, it isn't working again. I got no screen. I restarted it again, and it told me I had a BIOS Checksum Failure and it was searching for a CD or Floppy. I restarted it again (in the past this would happen and restarting would work). After that, I have nothing. I have reset the CMOS battery and I have reset the RTC jumpers. No success. The motherboard does not POST (no light on keyboard, no image).

Does anyone have any ideas about what is wrong with the P5B Dlx? Can I fix it? Do I need to RMA it again?

Do you have any extra sticks of RAM that only require 1.8 to 1.9 volts to work?
I had to buy a utility stick of RAM that was rated at 1.8 so when issues like EXACTLY what you are describing happen to me I could throw the other RAM in and it would boot...then I would change my settings back....save, reboot switch RAM back and then it would boot fine. I think the issue is that you have reset your CMOS so now your RAM voltage is set back to default (which is usually 1.8) and your RAM is probably high end RAM and require 2.0 or even 2.1 to work...
So you need to stick a single stick of RAM rated at 1.8 volts in so you can boot, from there you can change your settings and your RAM voltage to 2.0 or higher and reboot and put your good RAM back in. Make sense?

The thing is, the board never even gets to the RAM. When you remove the RAM completely it doesn't beep.

However, I did try a friends RAM rated at 1.8 or 1.9V. It didn't work either.

I've had instances where after I press F10 it hangs (when I'm doing really high OCs on the RAM) and then I proceed to turn it off manually, turn off the PSU, I wait for a couple of seconds, then turn it everything back on and settings I was trying to save did save and everything boots up. I also had some instances where the board resets itself completely but it always manages to POST on me. What I don't like about the P$B mobos is the fact they have have a removable BIOS EEPROM Chip so in case you got a bad flash you can always replace it with a good updated BIOS EEPROM Chip.

if the replacement goes a 2nd time by not posting any video, i would suspect the video card is pulling to much current and your PCIe circuit is burned up...the only way to prove this is to try a PCI video card...you can buy one at the local wal-mart..once confirmed, either way, you can return the card to wal-mart for a refund...

But the motherboard isn't lighting up the numpad light on the keyboard (something it normally does) and it isn't beeping if I remove the memory.

I think nicepun meant to say the P5B doesn't have a removable BIOS chip. Which is a shame.

i cant get clockegn tio chnage fequencies. using correct PLL, shows correct clocks. when i move slider and apply reverts back to what was set in BIOS. bloody pain in ass. so far stable 480MHz dual orthos blend. wasnt stable above 470 on 0910 :D

Yeah, it has some hardened white thermal paste. I removed it too. You should pull a bit, I think nothing can happen.

it is a shame...you will most likely have this problem again if you send the board in for RMA...you get another replacement P5B and probably the same thing will happen....when you pull your board out look for a burnt mosfet around the memory and video areas...if you can see a burnt mosfet then you know it's a surge problem with one of your pieces of hardware...i am thinking the VC but memory might be the problem...i read some where that another guy having a problem with Crucial memory.

my Foxconn 975X AB board literally caught fire on the bench...the mosfet right adjacent the PCIe VC slot burned up and i only had a 7600 GT card which does not require any additional power to the VC.

But the board had been running fine for 12 hours (folding and playing BF2142). It only gives me issues on restart. :confused:

My P5B Deluxe plays real nice with Crucial and just about any memory I throw at it.

I got it up and working again.

I cleared the RTC again. I put in a PCI video card, 1 stick of memory, and used a PS2 keyboard. Booted up great. I put my 8800GTS and memory back in and it is running like it never had a problem.

I can't wait to get the QuadGT to replace this P5B Dlx poop.

Is your PSU enough for your system? Specially when you're OCing the CPU and GPU that high. Don't give up on the P5B Deluxe yet, unless you already made up your mind.

I remember reading somewhere last night (it was like 4AM) that 0614 BIOS doesn't have the 1x bug. Can anyone confirm this? I may flash to that later today, but I'm debating..

See about 4 days ago I was ready to give up on my p5b-deluxe but THEN it started working one day out of no where... I've been through two of these boards each with varying issues and I was going to send this current one back and just go with another board or chipset all together because I was completely disgusted with all the issues and poor quality... heck I couldn't even boot whether cold or even a reboot without using another stick of RAM... but ONE day out of no where the board started acting fine... It was WEIRD!!! I could reboot, set voltages etc...without having to use it another stick of RAM and it actually did the clear cmos settings when it didn't like my settings and I could reboot and change them without having to do anything extra....it was actually working like it's was suppose to... So now I had my heart set on getting a new board and then BOOM it's working like a charm and today I hit 3.6 on air!!! =)
It's bitter sweet because now I want a new board to play with but I like having a stable computer to use RIGHT NOW lol... Moral of the story, don't give up too quickly on the board and if this board doesn't come around then try something else... give it another week it may just get possessed like mine and start acting properly. This doesn't however exuse ASUS from making such a poor quality product. I've never had an mboard with this many varying issues before....

It's not the quality of the product, it's the quality of the SH*T BIOS they threw together for it.

Nice success story though :)

I have no plans of ditching this board any time soon, but jeez.. and to make things even better their "technical inquiry" button on their site doesn't work so I can't email them.
