I am having trouble getting the pci-e primary slot to do any thing except
x1. I have tried the posted fix, but still nothing. I called asus and the tech
told me must be a bad board and get a ra # but I still think it is some settings that i need to change. help... thanks

I am having graphic interface problems with the pci-e slots.
Using the secondary slot , I can run link width x4 but I have never been able
to run any faster than x1 using the primary slot

Regarding the diabling HD audio. Yes it removes audio ... so i'll have to edit that in manual. Try puting front HD audio to AC97. And see if it boots up faster.

OK I flashed 1004 (0910 did hte same thing) and I've found a surefire way to get 16x PCI-E every boot.
Every time I restart the PC or turn it on, I get one long & 3 short beeps: video card. I wait for a sec and it reboots itself, and posts. 1x slot though.
If I shut down and turn PSU off, count to 15, and turn it back on.. it'll post normally and be 16x. This happens @ OC'ed and stock.
When the hell will ASUS fix this bug? I don't understand it, it's for this POS board only. WTF?
My first full day of owning the board. My impressions? Good, but ASUS needs to get their sh*t into gear.
If it does 1x at stock RMA it immediately. No waiting or debating. It only sometimes do 1x when OCed, or else is unacceptable.

It does 16 when I do the PSU crap. I'm not waiting for ASUS to do whatever to my board while having no rig.
It only does it because I have an ATi. This board hates ATi's according to many sources.

To my disappointment, I did not get as good as some other people here at XS did.
They reported same FSB limit but more stable.
For me, the FSB max decreased.
My previous analysis with BIOS version 0910 can be found at:

However, I have changed my computer specs from 1 harddrive to 2x harddrives and have installed a different OS (Vista from XP with SP2).
Maybe that caused the decrease of max FSB. I'm not flashing back the BIOS because I think my change of specs affected this decrease of max FSB.
I'm still using these Corsair ValueRAM 2GB DDR2-533 (PC-4300) :-(
Anyway, to the analysis:
Summary:
BIOS version 1004
Max FSB at 356 with the following settings
Vcore = 1.3375V
Vdimm = 2.00V
FSB termination = 1.4V
NB = 1.55V
SB = 1.50V
ICH = Auto
RAM settings = 5-5-5-15 6-42 3-11-5-14
Setting Difference from previous BIOS
Vdimm = 2.00V instead of 1.95V in BIOS version 0910
In BIOS version 1004,
Vdimm decreased to 1.95V, max FSB decreased by 2.0% (7 FSB)
Vdimm increased to 2.05V, max FSB decreased by 0.003% (1 FSB)
In conclusion, RAM is more stable with BIOS version 1004 when compared with version 0910.
This agrees with others' results who said that they can run tighter RAM settings at the same FSB/voltage/etc.
Detailed analysis:
Vcore = 1.3375V
When increased to 1.400V, max FSB decreased by 2.9% (10 FSB) <-big decrease? O.o
Vdimm = 2.00V
Please refer to "Setting Difference from previous BIOS" above.
FSB termination = 1.4V
When increased to 1.45V, max FSB stayed the same 0% (0 FSB) <-aka. use 1.4V to save electricity
When decreased to 1.3V, max FSB decreased by 2.3% (8 FSB)
NB = 1.55V
When decreased to 1.45V, max FSB decreased by 0.3% (1 FSB)
When increase to 1.65V, TBA (haven't tried yet but previous analysis with 0910 showed 0.5% (2FSB) decrease.)
SB = 1.50V
When increased to 1.60V, max FSB decreased by 4.6% (16 FSB) <-big decrease? O.o
When decreased to 1.3V, TBA (haven't tried yet; haven't tried in previous analysis with 0910 either.).
ICH = Auto <- I really do wonder what voltage "Auto" is at
When changed to 1.057V, max FSB decreased by 1.7% (13 FSB) <-big decrease? O.o
When changed to 1.215V, max FSB decreased by 0.3% (1 FSB)
Future:
So there's my results with this new version of our motherboard's BIOS.
Future analysis will hopefully be with:
better RAM (need $ or need RAM price to come down)
Vdroop mod (easily done)
Fan on NB heatsink
AS5 under NB/SB heatsinks
using screws instead of clip for NB/SB heatsinks

If you have same issue with 2nd board its most likely your rig.
Revert to BIOS Defaullts. no OC.
* I would try powering the card with another (AT) PSU ?
* it could be Card specific - did u google card+mobo ?
* Try entering BIOS and wait some, than reboot ?
I'll type up my methodology on my OC practice in a little while.
As for EIST, I think that is the same as the Intel SpeedStep option at the very bottom of the menu options where we enable/disable C1E, PECI, Virtualization, etc.

Overclocking Methodology

I had always found overclocking to the very time consuming and sometimes frustrating even thought I enjoy this hobby very much. In hopes of decreasing the amount of frustrating effort and wasted time, I have concluded that following a well planned procedure would be the best way to go.
Before I go on, I have some general assumptions based on my experience about overclocking.
Assumptions
1. max FSB with decent other settings > awesome other settings with decent max FSB
eg. 450FSB with 5-5-5-15 > 400FSB with 4-4-4-10
(with this said, I'll refer FSB to what many people would call "performance". In my opinion, "performance" is not specific enough, too many variables or would take too much effort/time to get numbers from benchmarks)

2. There is some optimal value for each setting to achieve max FSB.
If a setting is too low, max stable FSB is not achieved.
If a setting is too high, max stable FSB is not achieved.
(Same thing applies for voltage <- my high school science fair project. lol)
3. Stability of over a few minutes does not matter when finding the max FSB.
It is all relative. Adjust the final setting to be "stable" to your own liking (Ortho stress test with "X" amount of min, Complete "Y" benchmark without crashing or whatever, etc)

Tools/Programs
You can use whatever you want. I'll refer to my *preferred programs in asterisks* in the procedure.
1. *Systools*, ATItools (for graphics card), etc
Windows based automatic overclocking program (to change settings inside OS so you don't have to reboot every time you change settings)
Procedure
1. Search the internet/forums for other people's optimal settings (BIOS). Copy them accordingly to your hardware specs.
2. Change settings in BIOS. Boot into Windows. Start your program.
3. Auto overclock it. (while you wait, you can do something else like review/preview class notes, listen to audiobooks, browse the internet, eat, etc)
4. If it crash, reset and reopen the program. It have logged your last max FSB. If it didn't crash, and good for you.
5. Note the FSB onto a sheet of paper or tablet or notebook with your settings.
6. Change a setting. eg. voltage of chipset (Systools allow some changes like RAM settings. For other changes like voltage, reboot to BIOS.
7. Note the setting change. (you can have the notes in table form to make things tidy and easy to track)
8. Repeat 3-7 on your chosen setting (eg. my chosen "voltage of chipset") until you found the highest FSB you can get.
9. Change another setting. Repeat.

After that, you'll have optimal settings for your own unique hardware (because every hardware has some slight difference).
To be safe, run a stress test and lower the FSB accordingly (or change settings if you wish).
Special Note
Please be aware overclocking uses more electricity (aka. maybe higher electric bill, world's running out of energy, etc) The general equation is:
Wattage = K(some constant) * Speed * Voltage * Voltage
Notice that Voltage is squared in power consumption.
That means power consumption increases exponentially as you increase your voltage.
As for my computer, it usually undervolted. I overclock for fun or for games but mostly for bragging rights.
And like all other tutorials, I am not responsible for any damages/deaths/tragedies that this tutorial might cause.

I currently have my system stable @ 3,2Ghz and I was wondering if I should move from 9 x 356 to 8 x 400 ? Will this be better for performance or temps ?
I have 2Gb Corsair TwinX 6400 C5 memory (rated 5-5-5-12).

I have tried the ps fix but still allways get same results. I have never got x16 yet and I am not oc. However, when I put the video card into secondary slot it will boot fine but only x4. ??? Any more ideas what I can try???
