Shad, your board only allows a + 10% vcore or something like that?
Candjac has one hell of a cool site explaining how to modify your chip to get voltages, mults, etc.

I'll have to search for it.Quote:

I've got 2 old abit vmods kicking around I'm just waiting for some daylight before I put em on.
As it is 1.7 Tbred is good at 190x10 set at 1.75 but it looks like mine overvolts pretty well I measured 1.808. :D
Shad
Shadco: For some reason certain procs only go to 1.75 instead of 1.85v. Dunno why.
I have the 1800+ core on the Thoroughbred and its @ 1.5 Volts...thats why. I guess for some reason...the Asus "Smart Idiots" decided you could only go to 1.75 with it as a maximum. I just connected some of my L11 brigdes to make it look like the 1.65 and then I can go to 1.85 in bios, or just connect all of L11 and you can lock it at 1.85!
Ahhh the lower voltage triggeers it, it seems... Good job figuring that out ;)Quote:

Well thanks :toast: !
So I have a somewhat question for ya. How far would you expect to go on a 2400+ TBred and our motherboard with a 200FSB without a voltage mod or memory mod? I have the Corsair memory at 200 - CAS 2.5. I plan on selling it and getting 2*256 modules at CAS 2.
With your setup I would think that 200mhz fsb @ cas2.5 would be possible, if your ram is rated for it then I would think you could hit that.
Your processor overclock is dependant mainly on your stepping. If you have a good stepping you should be able to hit 2300mhz I would think.
damn, just read the whole damn thing in one sitting :D, definatly learned alot about voltages and the board itself. im still waiting on somethings before i oc the hell out of it. Unfourtenetly im on air, but it should be water this summer. just great guide sys!
My system:
2800+
A7N8X Deluxe
2 x Corsair 512mb cas2
ATI All-in-Wonder 9700PRO
VapoChill PE from AseTek :slobber:
My questions, bear with me, I'm n00b:
I will be using everything Stock, I am not comfortable with welding anything just yet. I'm new at OC'ing.
I want to get the most possible out of this system.
The VapoChill freezes the CPU so temperature should not be an issue there.
Above I read people having trouble getting ATI 9700PRO to function properly when FSB was put above 196 or there abouts, I assume I will meet same problem with the A-i-W card.
- Is there a way to fix this, I thought you could lock AGP bus speed at 66 so it wouldn't affect the card?
Ideally you could run 13,5 multi with 211 FSB, but the thing will burn up on me.
- Where do I need to place coolers, and what kind do you reccomend? - Referral to a site with illustrations would be nice.
Core Voltage is capped at 1,85
- When will that become a problem? - How high can I expect to go before it will crave more volt?
The RAM could be either 3200 or 3500 and CAS2 or 2,5, when I am limited to using stock options, which should I be getting?
- How much will it matter on final performance, a few points on a chart doesn't matter, stable performance is king.
- RAM voltage is also capped, what should I run that at? - Just bump it up to the cap and see how high I can go with that setting?
I hear Harddrives can have trouble handling alterations to the FSB.
- What harddrives run stably at high FSB? - Will it matter if I use the SATA on the A7N8X?
- I will be getting a 120GB disk, anyone want to make a reccomendation?
I plan to use the onboard LAN and Audio features, if I understand correctly then these will not be affected by the whole locked/not-locked PCI bus speed issue.
- Correct?
The CPU I am getting will probably be the 2800+
- What multipliers will I be able to use with it, without modifying the chip?
- Would it be wiser to get a 2600+/333, since it looks very similar but has a lower base multiplier (12,5 vs. 13,5), as in, is it the same chip or are there other weighty mods done to the 2800+ over the 2600+ that will give a 2800+ the edge at an imagined similar FSB and multiplier? :stick:
This is quite a mouthful, and I hope you will be able to answer but a few of my questions. If you answer them all, well, then I am out of questions. :D - For now anyhow ;)
Thank you!
You can run your nf2 @ 211 w/ the 9700 no prob. You can change the FSB frequency in the bios--If I'm not mistaken, the 9700 doesn't like high AGP speeds @ 8x, so you an just knock it back to like 80-85 or so.
Yes, it would be best to go 13.5x211 ;) but with only 1.85v that won't be doable.
I would recommend you put heatsinks on your mosfets for safetys sake, but then again you're not voltage modded, so that isn't an issue. If you want though here's a pic: http://www.maximumoc.com/img/hardwar...on_mosfets.jpg These are Thermaltake VGA heatsinks. You can get em all over the net. Just cut it appropriately.
If your 2800+ is a good stepping (new one) then you should be able to hit some really nice speeds w/ 1.85v. A geuss would be near 2.6-2.65ghz. I honestly can't say 100%. But I'm sure you'll at least get to that.
PC3200 C2 memory should be fine. Because you can only go to 211mhz.
Run it at C2, and you should be fine... you will get all the perforance you need.
For the memory voltage, 2.8 should be fine if you get pc3200.
I would recommend a WD hard drive, or a Maxtor if you want ATA133... both should do you fine. SATA is unaffected by the FSB.
For audio/lan... the lan has always worked for me. The sound gives out for me @ 204mhz. @ 200 it's fine.
A 2700+ might be the best option actually. B/c you're using everything stock like you had said, a 2700+ would enable you to get a nice fsb, and a nice overall overclock. You would be stuck on 13x though I believe.

For a noob as you say, you're putting together a nice comp! :) Hope info helps, well, I'm sure it will help some.
Thanks alot for the info sysfailur!
Well, I'm a newb when it comes to oc'ing and modding components, I've been using PC's for years. - Way back to 286's and Amiga before that, and C64 before that and Amstrad before that, and even poked about with some old 1 kilobyte thingy in my dads basement.
My old system is beginning to feel slow, so once every 3 or 4 years I go out and read up on whats good on the market and buy a new system. - This time I want something that will last a long time, OC'ing can add a few years to the upgrade cycle, I hope. :)
After i read all this posts, i see that i have to change many things in my A7N8X.
I bought this board yesterday (v1.04 with bios 1001E by default), and i installed the SO, and did some benchs.
http://sapp.telepac.pt/brave/sandramem.jpg
After i did that..i god corruption in the windows, and never got in to windows again. Have to install all over again.
Now im going to change the Dimms to Slot 2 and 3, and put some heatsinks in the chips, and AS3 in the NB. and try again :)
See you soon :)
The change to Slot2 and 3 didnt get more performance or stability. Didnt put heatsinks yet in the NB (no time).
But i have a big problem. When i put above 198 FSB, the 3DMark gets some flickering with few images stops. I dont know what could doing this. I can put 204 fsb and run PCMark and Sisoft Sandra with no probs, but in games and 3DMark give this flickerings. Anyone knows how can i handle this ?
Hi to everyone.......
I have one question...
my MoBo is death after changes in bios and then F10 for saving ......
What do you know about A7N8X Deluxe "death syndrome" - F10 in bios ?
Thanks.......
hi there, will the vmod work for non deluxe versions?
By reading on forums I have learned everything about this problem after it happened to me before Xmas (A7N8X Deluxe 1.04 1001E). Many others have had this also happen. The conclusion is to return the board for a replacement. It is dead, no CMOS clearing can revive it.Quote:

NUNEZ1980 -> Yes, it should work for both, you could check so that the v-controllers are the same.
/Damir
thanks damir for the reply, but the issue is that the name on top of the chip is different than the one with the mod, the only think I figure is that the pin might be the same nomatter what chip is in the mobo, I hope this is true:rolleyes:Quote:

Hmm, could you take a photo, or tell us what chip it is on your mobo ? If so, I could look at the sheet for it and tell you if it will work the same ! :)
/Damir
What actually was done that is killing these poor defenseless mobo's?Quote:

I'm running mine with BIOS "C" then jumped to "G" and it is working fine.

the chip has the following printed:
L691780
B990A0246
MALAYSIA
and is the same side as the one with the mod on this thread, sorry but don't have a digi camera:(
Seems to me that it is the same chip, and the mod should work the same.

This is my first post here. I'm old to computers (8088s), but new to OC.
I've learned a great deal from reading this thread. Thanks to all who have contributed to my learning!
I'm putting together a new system described below:
Antec 1080 AMG w/ TruePower 430 PS
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
AMD 2600+ 333fsb
2 x 512MB Corsair CAS2
Innovatek water cooling kit
ATI 9500Pro
Yamaha CRW-F1
Questions:
1) I'm considering going SATA but I wonder if one can boot from SATA as this is unclear in the MB manual. I'm thinking of the Seagate SATA drive. Anyone booting from SATA?
2) I'm puzzled about whether a range of multipliers will be available with an unlocked CPU. Some seem to have a range of settings available with unlocked CPUs. What can I expect from my chip?
Any other suggestions to a novice system builder appreciated!
Yes, you will be able to boot from your SATA-Drivers.
A XP2600-333 has a Standard Multiplier of 12.5 , Ie its a lower then 13X CPU, meaning, it will be unlocked, and straight away, you will be able to Choose all multis from 5.5 to 12.5. You can expect to (with some luck) get about 12.5X x 190 FSB for 2375 MHz total with watercooling and 1.85V.
Good Luck with your project ! :)
