By the way, any luck in getting a BIOS image modified to fully support ACPI? Linux is getting tiring for me... yeah yeah I know, it is "better" but I can't stand it, there are too many things that just don't make sense about it that can't be worked around or are hard to deal with that drive me nuts.

Crunching only. But from the looks of things, I need to keep an eye on it as I've had issues with BOINC doing weird things before. I followed the linux how-to thread and found out after the fact that it had directions to using an old pre-release version of BOINC, so I'm blaming it on that version. But every time I try to upgrade it, BOINC manager cannot connect to the local host and sits there. Heck even with the one that is working, if I make a shortcut on the desktop to it, it won't work. It is like it loads an entirely different instance of the manager totally separate from everything else, it is really weird.
Meh. Linux > Me.
i hear ya man, i have a love/hate relationship with linux too. Luckily i haven't had those problems. Maybe you should just start over and install everything fresh

I'm hardly what I would consider a "guru" and don't have trouble like what you describe, nor have I ever done so. I certainly don't consider myself to be any kind of "genius" for that matter, either. I suspect you're trying to transport your Windows skills and this is likely to be ... problematic.
For your BOINC manager issue, make sure you link to the run_manager script, not the binary itself. Both the client and the manager take the directory they are run from as part of their environment conditions, so the manager won't be looking for the client in the right place but in the starting directory and it will fail.

I may have said no 6-core support because (if?) they don't support DDPM (split power planes) which is a requirement for Istanbul and an option with Shanghai. Even Shanghai support hinges on the firmware having correct microcode and AGESA..
