Again, nobody has a 06 DC Opteron? dave at flickerdown has CCBWE 0601 UPMW and CCBWE 0602BPMW, 165s. If they run at 2.6-2.7 with stock I'll get one for the summer :D

You have to restart the program, it reads speed on load. It's not like CPUZ, WCPUID or Crystal.

I'm much happier with this CPU now that I've removed the IHS.. it got me absolutely nothing but a few more hours of prime stable at all speeds with 1.4v, but nothing over my old speeds are 100%. It did help at higher voltages though, I've now got 3 1/2hours prime stable at 2799 with 1.425 in BIOS. And that's good enough for me.. until I get my water setup

Yes, I think the stock HSF is pretty decent as well. The clip system is a bit on the flimsy side but it has potential. I am thinking of throwing on a 120mm fan with a shroud on it to see if I can raise the efficiency and lower the noise rates.

I also found out that the DFI was not running in dual channel mode. Turns out the yellow and orange mem slots are color coded for a reason (mem timings).

I've been experimenting with vcores and different settings since last night, I wanted to ask if anyone had any suggestions for whats acceptable for vcore?
I'm at 1.5. but CPUZ says 1.472 though :cool:

Well just got my Opteron 170 CCBWE 0550 UPMW and I am currently running 3000Mhz x 2 @ 1.48v. Only primed for a little over an hour, because I am off to try some BF2 and run a couple of benches at this speed. I hope to get 3100x2 stable as my Opty 148 can run 3240Mhz rock solid 24/7.

Look in the lower right hand corner, mbm5 i think, is showing +7c load.

For some reason when I took a picture with Snagit, it would not show the temps. The PWMIC around 38-42C and chipset temps were around 46-49C. The idle cpu temp is about -18C and loaded +7-9C.

I have been testing all day since my last post at 2x 3100Mhz 1.53v. Both cores were prime stable over an hour, 3DMark05, 06 and 01 benched fine. I played BF2 for an hour with no problems, burn a couple DVDs, winRAR'd a ton, with no hickups yet....

Just arrived- testing on stock cooling until I put it under water (storm) over the weekend.

CCB1E 0550VPMW Seems good for 2.8 @ 1.4v- haven't tried higher clocks. Primed for 1 hour.

I'm surprised at the high load temps! :mad: Maybe a bad IHS. I'm not sure I want to remove it.

EDIT: My Chipset temps have been that high since the day my board arrived. I'm guessing bad mount. I'll reseat it with AS5 soon.

This is the hottest cpu that I have owned. Every other cpu has been able to stay under -3C loaded.

Very nice :) And your temps look about right for this CPU. I used to run 2772@1.4v in BIOS (until I cranked up the volts a bit). Temps were 40C with the best aircooling there is, and now they're 38C with a naked chip and the best air cooling there is. I just bought a nice water setup, we'll see how it does under that :D

PS I don't know why everyone goes by the sensor readings for their voltages, if you have a regular nF4 DfI board, volts are exactly what you set in the BIOS, +.03v under load. With 1.4v, it reports 1.372, actual is 1.401 idle and 1.431 load.

The highest I can get it 2.6 @ 1.525v on my 165.
If I lower the core volts, it cannot dual prime. at 1.525 it is okay for several hours. I wanted to ask if anyone had some tips on possiblyt lowering the voltages or on how I can find out exacly what could be holding me back?

Can anyone suggest to me what is the best watercooling system I should buy for my Opty??

Want to do 3.0Ghz like FlyBoyGeo above but when I try the voltages he is using I get massive heat problems then core 1 fails

U be better off starting a new thread in the appropriate part of the forum. The reason i say this is because your question is not a simple one to answer. After starting the thread i suggest you simply edit your post here, adding a link to the thread you started in the correct section.

Some of the things u need to consider are, budget? ready made kit? DIY WC? Design?

This is (as all my systems are run) a closed case setup, exactly as things are in my sig (i.e. fans at 5v). I dont think tht this ovrclk will stand the test of the summer which is coming. The voltage reads 1.58v in windows, but is actually 1.65 under load when reading with my DMM. For the voltage i am using i think the temps are pretty good. This is IHS-less and slightly lapped core. Im hoping i can get the temps to drop a degree or 2 after the AS5 has had time to settle. Whilst priming i have been working in illustrator and photoshop as i find it better to be running other apps when priming as this is guranteed to bring down prime95 alot faster ;)

I will edit post when it fails, and im sure it will fail, hehehee

Oh ambient temps are arnd 23C, in the case is probabaly in the 30's

Well core0 failed at 2hrs (its always core0, LOL)

Think im going to leave core0 loaded with CPU- Burn-in, hopefully i can break her in, hehehee

I got a question i would like some opinions on, at the settings im running i had to drop the HTT multi to 2x, raising the LDT voltgae does not help stabalise at higher HTT speeds, so my HTT bus speed is 668mhz. Is this a deficiency in the CPU or mthbrd? Id like to think its the mobo which is having problems handling the HTT bus speed....

With that CPU i couldn't get past 2.93-ish Ghz at all, even with clockgen, without using 2x LDT multiplier. I am pretty sure that i mentioned it to you, because it had me stumped for a few minutes myself.

Anyway man, 165 @ 3Ghz stable on water is pretty sick :toast:
i wouldn't even worry about only 2 hours prime, i rarely test for that long anyway. I'll bet if ambient temps go down 1 degree it will run many hours more.

And 23c ambients, damn. It is record cold here in Santa Cruz, like 3c outside, got some snow-ish hail. Closest thing to snow i've ever seen in Santa Cruz in my life, record cold levels.

New Member with an DFi Expert MB/Opteron 170 and Questions

I want to thank everyone for the wealth of info that has been posted on this site, and hope to continue learning from you. This is my first serious attempt at building an overclocked system.

I have been building up an AMD Opteron dual core system based on an Opteron 170 processor, and have found some of my results to be quite different than expected.

I am getting better overclocks with low voltages than with what voltages are often used here. But if I up Vcore to the 1.4-1.45 V level, I am only stable to 2550 MHz range, and CPU temps rapidly hit 49-50 C (using Smart Guardian). I suspected a poorly seated CPU or a bad job of applying the AS5 was to blame, but redoing it (with a very thin layer) made no difference.

My Opteron 170 seems to really hate higher temps, with anything above a 46 C reading in Smart Guardian causing errors. It wasn't until I moved everything into my new Silverstone Temjin T07S case (much better cooling than my old Antec Sonata) and dropped my Vcore that my OC attempts met any real success.

I ran AMD MaxTcase yesterday, and it told me my max Tcase temp is 53 C.
I have been able to run dual Prime 95 at 18 hr + stability (I stopped it then, no failure) with CPU and PMW temps of 41-42 C. My chipset temp is only 38 C, perhaps due to my running a Zalman chipset heatsink. (all temps off of Smart Guardian).

My opteron 170 seems quite efficient, giving me 2700 MHz for only 1.350 Vcore, but I was hoping to reach a stable 2800 MHz so I could maximize my Mushkin XP4000 Redline RAM (set on an 11 divider). This RAM is stable to 257 MHz with current settings.

I noticed my Vantec Stealth's 470 W PSU's voltages were starting to fluctuate (consistent undervoltage) at my 2700 MHz overclock, so I am replacing it this week with a OCZ Powerstream 600W PSU before going further. I hope the extra power and stability of this PSU will allow further OC improvements on air.

I have several questions:

1)Is my particular version of the Opteron 170 (CCBWE 550 UPMW) more suitable for a water cooled system because of its apparent temperature sensitivity?

2) Should I "pop the lid" off of my processor, and if so, what are the likely benefits/potential risks? Keep in mine I am using a Zalman CNPS9500LED heatsink, and it is not particullarly light.

3)If I eventually go with a water cooled setup, do you think my Opteron 170processor will handle more volts and provide better overclocks, or am I better off going with an Opteron 175?

Any input or suggestions on how to proceed will be greatly appreciated.

Stick with your 170'er, the 175'er will not perform much or any better.
The OCZ will definately be an factor when chasing higher clocks.
Opteron 170 seems to have a "magic" temp limit of 44-45C to stay under, it's more a matter of keeping the temps down than feeding voltage.
It sounds like money is not a major concern for you, grab a better watercooling kit and you will most definately hit 3GHz on not too high volts.:)

Looks like the chip has a LOT of potential

A note though, with dual cores you aren't really stressing it unless you run 2 super pis simultaneously.

Take the SP folder, make a copy of it, open up both SP executables, go into task manager and assign each one to a specific core, and then run them simultaneously for the full dual core effect.
