Are any of you Gentlemen brave enough to try out some 8GB kits with 2x4GB?
Apparently G.skill Sniper CL7 Kits are pretty good, however I have not seen very many results on this board to make a decision to purchase.

@CryptiK: Please be careful mate, I don't want you to fight over the REX with your GF! :D
LCCs are great fun, but incredibly time consuming, I still haven't got any good results for the 3 and 4GHz categories at PCGHX, only 2.4, 3.6 and 4.5GHz. The first two categories can both be done at 500MHz FSB speed, which means I'll have to tune memory timings once again... :D
While I was at it for the 2.4GHz category I also tried to make a 17m59s score, but the board refused to boot at lower FSB speeds with the settings I used for the 32M run. Very weird behavior...
@JohnZS: Sorry John, I don't plan on purchasing a kit and I guess running them on the board, especially with an overclocked quad core processor, will be very tough.
Its ok, she's been upgraded to the R2E & Gem 920, the REX is now in the cupboard ;) Ah ok, I have only seen the LCC here, where its time categories not CPU speed categories. They are a lot of fun though.
hope its ok to post this here. I have been looking for a mod bios for the RE that has newer Intel Option Rom. I finally found one.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YC13RW9R Its from what i can see its the newest beta bios with newer option rom
"Intel ICH9R 9.6.0.1014 "
Been using this a bit. All seems fine.
Has a few other mods. Not sure what they mean. Source. http://www.jmax-hardware.com/forum/i...ic,6246.0.html
Sorry to resurrect an old thread but my issue still seems relevant to others and I'm hoping to finally find a solution. I've run a REX/QX9650 for 3 years, custom built, liquid cooled system. It's all set to AUTO *shame* but every so often I tinker with the BIOS to see if I can hit the 24/7 settings I want;
FSB: 400
Multi: 10
DRAM: 1600
That's it, that's all I want! Problem seems to be that I run 4x2GB sticks. Yeah, I know. Ramguy over at Corsair swears it can be done, he just hasn't ever explained HOW! lol
After reading through hundreds of threads, I've come close to getting stable but I still haven't any idea what voltages to use for RAM and things like AI Twist in the BIOS are a mystery to me.
This is the RAM I run, it's DDR3/1600 but obviously running on AUTO dumbs it down, quite a bit;
Corsair XMS3 DHX CM3X2G1600C9DHX 2GB (X4)
DDR3-1066 DDR3 SDRAM (7-7-7-20 @ 533 MHz) (6-6-6-18 @ 457 MHz)
Once and for all, I'd like to nail this and get it stable. I'm sure one of the OC Masters has some input and it would be GREATLY appreciated. FYI my algebra sucks.
EDIT: FYI, the temps on my dual loop with Swiftech block are chilly, 21-25c on idle, 35-39c on stress. NB is hotter by 15-20c.
8GB is going to be tougher than normal, but if you dont aim too high for ram speed ie: DDR3-1600MHz, you *should* be able to do it with the proviso that your CPU can do 4GHz at reasonable vcore.
I cannot remember what a reasonable vcore for 4GHz would be, but that can come later. First, you need to get it stable at 400 FSB and DDR3-1600MHz. Start with PL10, loose ram timings (set primary timings to 9-9-9-24 and leave the rest on auto for now) and set the ram's designated voltage for its rated speed (will say this on the ram). Set vNB to 1.45v, set Vtt to 1.30v. Set AI Clock twister to moderate (this setting controls chipset subtimings and directly affects memory subsystem bandwidth and latency). Leave clock skews on auto for now, they shouldnt need tweaking at these settings unless 8GB affects skews more than I think it will.
Now set your FSB to 400 MHz and set the strap to 333 (you will be using the 2:1 memory divider so setting 400 FSB will give you 800MHz (DDR3-1600MHz). Set the CPU multiplier to 8x (this will give you 3.2GHz CPU).
Try that and tell me if it boots and gets into windows. If so can you run some prime large FFT's for 30mins or so.
Thank you, CryptiK. I'll set that up this evening and post back. Would it be easier for you to use a template?
8 gigs is tough
i was only able to overclock mine to around 1900 but with a dually
even 2x2 was tough to get a q9650 higher than 475fsb with 2x1 500fsb was doable
quads +2+gb stix dont play too nice unless you got nice chips
I do not think that 8GB can ever be truly stable @1600Mhz+ with a QuadCore on this board, not ever. I have spent a long time trouble shooting and tinkering with things, but unless you are prepared to shove way too much voltage than you aught to into the board (and risk breaking things) I cannot see anything happening.
On a lighter note, I replaced my horrid ram with good quality Corsair RAM which is very happy @ 1.50V CL8-8-8-24 and NB @ 1.27V
I admit I epic failed with my overclocking attempts. Perhaps my QX9650 was a bad chip? or I am pretty crap at this tweaking. Either way I am reasonably happy with 3.33Ghz @ 1.27V (core), 1.20V (FSB Vtt) and 1.51V (CPU PLL).
Any higher and the system loses stability and/or requires way too much volts. For example 10.5 multi (3.5Ghz) requires 1.32 V on the VCore and 1.31V on the NB
That is a big jump in volts for a small increase in Mhz.
If I am honest I would love to have 3.66Ghz stable, but it is just not possible :( Or at least I do not know how to tweak without hitting notorious BSOD when LinXing. (causing disk errors) if there was a USB bootable Prime95/LinX that would be ace as I could happily tweak skews and GTL (currently using 0/2 = AUTO and 1/3 = +40mV) until I find stability.
John
guys,i just wonder what other block can fits on rex since the bitspower full coverage aix48 already discontinued and and no longer available at my country.
just wanna complete the unfinished watercooled project on my rex. :)
So I'm settling down again to try to OC this board. Running a QX9770 with 4x2GB Diablo RAM. It's pretty nice. Requires a lot of voltage, though. I dropped my multi to 6 in an attempt to get the RAM stable at 1800 (450 FSB), with an aim to 2000 eventually. I'm at 2V on the RAM (only rated for 1.9 but oh well) and 1.55 on the NB. It's WC'd so we'll see how far I can push it. Anyone know what's the highest I should be shoving into my NB for 24/7 usage? Temps are fine.
Me, 1.45v, others range from that to 1.65v just depends on 1) how much you love the board 2) need the clocks and 3) how big your balls are ;)
Seriously all my gear is still in pristine never degraded condition when I sell it so you can take my max as a baseline. I know that short runs at 1.85-1.90v on air has degraded some NB's so not advisable going that high daily.
you got a block on your nb or you using the heastpipe+ block
i ran nb 1.63v watercooled forever n my nb never hit 35c
as long as your temps are good ....
its heat that degrades the nb n goin over 1,7v
i also have enzotech copper heatinks on pwm
i doubt you gonna hit 1900mhz
its tough hittin 2000mhz with 2x2 lol n you wanna do 4x2b with a quad
Hallo
I am very new here and what to ask some questions to OC Expertes here. I have a Rampage Extreme here which is watercooled by Liquid Extasy Fullcover cooler. At the moment i have an E7200 M0 CPU which i OCed to 3,8 Ghz @ 1,35 V.
At the start i want to know what are good temps for Watercooled Chipset Nb and SB. At the moment i have NB 35°C and SB 36°C under load (Prime95 8 hours) Is that ok?
In the Future there is an incoming QX9770 CPU. The Final goal is to reach a stable 24/7 Setup. Minimum should be 4 Ghz. 4,5 Ghz is the final goal. But somethere between 4-4,5 Ghz would be ok. The other thing is i want to have 8 GB RAM. This is the cause i desided to get a MB Watercooler because all i red the vNB must be very high to get 8 GB working with Quads.
I suppose so it will be hard to get this under water and low voltages for 24/7. But we will see what comes in the future.
i also have nb watercooler and @ 1.63v i never pass 35c
nb wont degrade as long as it runs cool so you can pump up voltage;)
you should be able to do 4.5 if your cpu can do it "because of unlocked multi"
hope you didnt pay too much for that cpu
Hm thx for reply. Hm, what type of Watercooler u use at your Rampage Extreme x48?
This is mine:

I dont think it will be so easy to hit 4,5 Ghz with that CPU and 24/7 longife Voltages. I read several topics about this CPU and found it depends mainly on luck-factor what CPU you get. The only thing i could do was selecting a C1 Stepping with the latest Batch number i could found.. I will see what CPUID it will have.
My personal limit for 24/7 is max 1,35 - 1,4 V Vcore and max 65°C under Load.
It will be realy hard and lucky to reach this.
honestly your better of with a E0 9550 than anything c1
i use a moded swiftech nb wb +enzotech copper pwn heatsinks
my has been in a box for a while now lol
If you guys are looking for a modded BIOS with updated RAID rom:
http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...-10R-RAID-ROMs
Anyone have any luck with 2x8GB sticks. Just grabbed the Geil EVO CORSA 1333's. they do not post. don't get used but will show up in cpuz etc.
Any bios that worked for 2x4GB?
Tried 0404 / 1305 so far.
not sure what prevents them from working, given they're the same rank and banks as my 2GB sticks.
You might have reached the limits of X48, here's a small excerpt from the X48 datasheet, page 19:
• Supports 512-Mb and 1-Gb DDR3 DRAM technologies for x8 and x16 devices.
• Using 512 Mb device technologies, the smallest memory capacity possible is
256 MB, assuming Single Channel Mode with a single x16 single sided un-buffered
non-ECC DIMM memory configuration.
• Using 1 Gb device technologies, the largest memory capacity possible is 8 GB,
assuming Dual Channel Mode with four x8 double sided un-buffered non-ECC or
ECC DIMM memory configurations. Note: The ability to support greater than the
largest memory capacity is subject to availability of higher density memory
devices.
2Gb ICs might still be okay but 4Gb ICs might just be too much for the memory controller to handle.
i'll test a cheap 8gb once it arrives.
these x48s are so sweet to have :)
-one dead rex
-one dead p5e3 lol
LOL you just reminded me I still have my REX. I totally forgot about it
