Ok make sure you run video related items, cause you have already passed prime for 10 hours, in my book thats stable, so do video intensive applications.
yeah, currently running a video in the bbc iplayer in the background on one monitor, and playing Far cry2 on another monitor. I will never be as intensive as that. Been running 30 minutes greatly so far. NB GTL of 20mv seems to have done it. I really hope it doesn't bluescreen. :s
great, just keep going, i would say if you pass for 1 hour solid with that intense, your golden.
Well, played for nearly 3 hours. PC has been on for 4 hours with these new settings. Running as sweet as can be. Had iTunes playing songs muted in the background, BBC iplayer playing a movie, and playing far cry 2 on the main monitor.
Great. Think either that little notch up in vcore OR NB GTL was the solution.
However, my 2 other RAM sticks will be returned this week, so they'll probably mess it all up. If I find instability due to adding 2 more RAM modules what should I change? More NB GTL or NB voltage? Everything else should be fine yes?
just pop them in, and see if it post, sometimes i have added 2 mor sticks, and it worked fine. You may need more nbv, but have to wait and see, :clap:, glad your not bsod anymore.
OK, am starting my breakdown. After 6 hours of playing about with it, I started just surfing the internet. And it froze for 5 seconds, BSOD and restarted. I will disable Loadline Cal, as it is known to cause instability on idle. It lasted a lot longer I can tell you. 6 hours as opposed to 3. Vcore was 1.33 instead of 1.25. It's now 1.35 with loadline.
I'll try vcore higher, without loadline enabled. Nothing else was happening you see. No itunes, no videos, no far cry 2. Only firefox open surfing the net.
Voltage seems to have been dropped suddenly when load had decreased. I think loadline is the issue.
EDIT 2 - I just disabled loadline, and set vcore to 1.45 (1.488 idle in cpu-z, 1.448 ish LOAD). When I started PC up, only 1 display was working, and resolution had gone to 800 x 600. There was an errror message saying incompatible device driver. or something like that.
I shut down, cleared CMOS, loaded defaults and booted back up again and all is well. What the hell?
Joe leave the load line on, i have never had a issue with it, or know of any. I think you have heat issues, you pass prime for 10 hours, games for 6, then bsod, something weird is going on, you dont need that much cpu voltage, i think its heat issue, gets to hot, and unstable, what else can it be.
OK, left loadline on, and mounted my 90mm fan back up poiting towards the fusion block.
Termps now idling 52 Nb and 53 SB. Much better. Temps after 20 minutes of large FFTs are 55 NB and 53 SB. Much better, if it bluscreens again today, I know it isn't heat.
Yes absolutely this is what it took me to get stable at 3.8 on a Quad
-36 -40 -40 -36 at 1.34375vcore 1.49v-nb LLC enabled.
Beware it took 2 days to dial in the right settings and if you re-adjust the NB voltage it changes the stable GTL settings too.
The best way I have found to dial it in is make it fail. Find the high and find the low and use the average rounding up to begin testing thoroughly using Prime small FFT's. You would think hmmm GTL 0-1-2-3 it must represent each core but this is false if your are not already aware of what each means or how to adjust GTL's give the following articles a read.

Yep thats what i was thinking, he may have to use cpu gtls, but some people are stable with quads, and never touched the gtls.
I just can not run prime95 past 48 mins on me overclock for 3.8ghz core 1 always fails bang on 48mins i tried these settings yesterday and same again 48 mins failure nb temp is like 59 at this stage when under full load.I have also tried -36-40-40-36 same 48mins failure.

Any one else have a failure at 48mins on a overclock of 3.8ghz
It's unstable when idling. I used it all morning with no problems. I left it at 12pm, at 2 pm it bsod. and the bluescreen stayed there until I got back to my pc at 5pm. It is perfectly fine under a big load, it when idling or light loading it bsod.
I am looking at GTLs now. VTT is set to 1.36v in BIOS. Should I calculate from actual or BIOS value?
I have done a quick google and found that unstable idle can mean GTL tweaking. No idea where to start, reading those links now.
What VTT setting should I have? 1.36v in BIOS too high for 1600 fsb?
I would say 1.32 1.34, i would use 1.34vtt, yeah it has to be gtl, there is nothing left, they w ill be - for sure. You will have to calculate it, something like -36 -40 -36 - 40 something like that, thats why i dont want to mess with a quad right now, dual core is much easier. If you know how to calculate it for your vtt, then you should be fine, you miight have to - that nb gtl to.
I thought 65 nm quads (Q6600) like mine needed + GTl values and not -?
Hmmmm not sure about that, havent seen a quad w ith + gtls, just calculate it i think its 0.67, and do it -, and + you know which is right, sorry but i think, not sure, its -
I think prime95 fails at 48mins because at that stage it might produce more heat and nb hitting 59 at that poing could be the culprit i have now lowered the nb to 1.38 and nb temp is 53 full load so will see how long this one last running prime95 now .Nope aint that it just failed after 5 mins core 1.
Well, I think I've cracked it!
I know you told me NOT to disable Loadline Calibration, but I've disabled it, upped vcore to 1.4v, and all is well. been running bsod free ALL DAY. I played with it all afternoon, and then left it idling tonight. No bsods to greet me on my return.
Temps on NB and SB are 52 and 53 respectively. I have bought a small 40mm fan so that I can cool down NB better.
I am not changing any settings now for a couple of days, to make sure it really is stable.
Got past me 48min mark in prime been running now 3 hrs priming with these settings core 1 is trailing behind but has not stoped yet anyway.

You seem to also suffer from the load line calibration problem like I did back when I used to have my PC overclocked. Anandtech also described this, if you are unable to use your pc with it enabled, leave it disable and live free of problems. Your CPU wont degrade because of LLC disabled.
Ok one thing i cant understand is ok it ran for 3 hrs before failure so this morning i decided to try again and now when i start prime95 core 3 fails straight away settings are the same wierd.
I agree with slim142 set LLC to auto with the voltages listed above you should be fine with one possible exception Vcore may need 1.4v. If core three is failing remember the rule for tweaking GTL's
When the failure is on 0 or 1 increase GTLREF on lanes 0 and 2
When the failure is on 2 or 3 increase GTLREF on lanes 1 and 3
Above you are in the negative range so you need to move closer to the + range in order to increase ie: a setting of -36 to increase would move to -29
Try say -43 -43 -46 -36 (Base on your previous setting from above)
looks like your pretty close to dialing in your stable clock.
I cant set -43-43-46-36 in my bios as the option for 1 core is -36 and up or lower but no -46 and on second core there is no option for -36 .Just another note i just got back from work left me pc on been 5 hrs i tried prime95 again now and its not failing core3 like first thing this morning maybe i should not run prime95 straight away on cold start wierd i know .

This is STABLE with 2 RAM modules 2x 1Gb. BUT, I have added 2 more RAM modules, and it is unstable. More NB? How much more do I need? I also tried command rate to 2T, but it didn't help. How much NB volts do I need for 1600 linked and synced?
Why do you have p1 p2 on auto ?:shrug:, and why are all your memory subtimings on auto, whatever there set to by auto, try lowering them.
I have enabled p1 and p2 now. On stock 1333 mhz, auto sub timings are as follows:
tRRD = 5
tRC = 34
tWR = 12
tWTR = 16
tFAW = 26
tRD = 11
tRTP = 5
tRFC = 74
tREF = 7.8
Auto sub timings with 1600 gives me these values:
tRRD = 6
tRC = 41
tWR = 12
tWTR = 18
tFAW = 31
tRD = 11
tRTP = 6
tRFC = 88
tREF = 7.8
PC freezes quite quickly with sub timings from 1333 auto. Still with the looser sub timings, pc freezes and bsods and restarts randomly.
The problem is that the 2 original RAM modules were rated at 1.5v, so 1600mhz was achievable with only 1.6vdimm in BIOS. The 2 other RAM moduels have returned from RMA and these are now rated 1.6v. So I am going to try more VDIMM so that new RMA'd modules probably need more VDimm.
EDIT - VDIMM @ 1.74 and memtest 8 passes.
2T causes freezes in windows. I have no idea why. Set to 1T and it's run a LOT longer.
I have placed a 90mm fan over NB temps are maxing at 58 under load (1 hour far cry 2). Temps were hitting 61 before and got bsods and restarts after a good 45 minutes stress test.
It "seems" a lot more stable now. Why on earth does everyone else with this board get better stability with 2T, but I don't?
