AMD Newark 3700+ @ 3105.1MHz Air-Cooled

My DFI motherboard is defective and will be shipped back to Newegg tomorrow morning for a replacement. The board will not boot up without the DDR Booster installed in DIMM slot 3. I've relocated the RAM to all possible locations using different types of memory. I've tried all Official and Beta BIOS releases with no luck. One module, two modules - it just won't boot without the DDR Booster. Five hours of my Sunday down the drain. Just lovely. :rolleyes:

At the rate things are going, I don't think I'll be completely done testing until June 4th. I'm just hoping my Adventures In Overclocking don't end up becoming Frustrations In Overclocking. :rolleyes:

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll just plug in my phase change units and cool off my hot head for a few minutes. :p:

Sorry to hear that Conrad. :( I was really looking forward to your Newark o/c thread. This overclocking stuff can be like a sport unto itself; oh the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. I'm sure your luck will bounce back...

Ozzi, my Newark doesn't seem to like high HTT at all. 275HTT X 11 (3.025GHz) and I get memtest errors and BSOD. 252 X 12 (3.024GHz) w/ everything remaining constant, I get no memtest errors and Windows seems to boot up fine (my HT is 2.5 so it's not that). I can't remember if you experienced this or not... to lazy to look back through LOL.

This seems to be the case with many San Diego's I've seem as well.

Hope to have a 3GHz screen shot soon...

damn that sucks, at least 254 isnt that bad tho, and you got a nice multi at least, that helps make up for it. IIRC didnt some early winnie's also wall around 250?

The good news: I was able to figure out how to get higher HTT, 266MHz isn't bad.

the bad news: I'm having a hard time figuring out why I can't get it stable @ 3GHz, even when giving it 1.675 vcore, any higher voltage and Windows blue screens. :slapass:

With water, I'm able to keep a cool 35C (loaded) @ 2.92GHz, so temps don't appear to be the problem. :p:

xeno, yours seems to be a bit better than mine. might be because of the water though :toast:

also, it seems that the memory controller is pickier than a spoiled 8 year old :p:
i'm sure you remember how in the beginning of the thread, i couldn't get over 210mhz.. bascially it comes down to relearning how to overclock ram :slap:

Exactly. loosening the timings was the first thing i tried. But Ironically, it made things worse. 3GHz got BSOD at any HTT, vcore, or vdimm w/ loose timings.

Still workin on it. This is looking very much like a fussy mem controller.

yup, that it is. at least the new bios made things a bit better in terms of dimm placement :)

That may be my next step. I was hoping not to have to do that since it's a pain in my azz to shuffle between dimm slots because of the way my RAM's cooling fans ar mounted. :dammit:

Nice!! Were 2.6GHz @ 1.35v and 2.8GHz @ 1.45v P95 and 3D stable? This is exactly what I'm looking for, I'd be stoked if my chip could do 2.8GHz with 1.4-1.45v. :)

I haven't used prime yet, trying to see how high it will go with just 2MB SuperPI, and then plan to prime from there.

Tried the official 5/4 bios and it allowed me to use dimm slots 1+3 again, but saw no improvement. Still terribly unstable at anything over 2.926GHz no matter what the vcore.

I found an amazing thing with this CPU. It just went memtest error free for an hour at 3.192GHz (266x12, 1.675v) with the 9:10 divider on memory (228MHz, 2-2-2 1T, 3.1v). But still no joy in Windows a megahert above 2.926GHz.

Oh well, i'll try some more tomorrow... maybe I'll put my TCCD in to see if it'll help get it stable @ the magic number LOL.

i did that too. i have about an extra 100mhz in superpi than i do in prime95 :(

Keep on it xeno man because my pc and urs are almost identical so im hopin once all my stuff gets here i will have similar results, get all the bugs worked out and get her screamin so when i run into problems i can ask ya what works and what dont :)

At first i was kinda sceptical of building a new pc based on older 754 technology, but now its startin to feel like i made the right move. I hope

You guys think its worth it to go from a 3400+ CG Clawhammer to this? My Claw can OC decently under my water setup (I can get up to 2.6ghz, but not stable) but this is just so tempting. I'm debating getting one of these if I could get it up to 3ghz stable or so, but maybe thats asking too much. Any opinions? I'm not good with decisions, so help me out lol.

Well, i might as well tell y'all what I tried today to kick start this up to 3g's. Since I feel pretty confident it's the mem controller holding everything back, I tried these mem configs to see if the spoiled little brat wanted to finally play nice:

1x512 Twinmos SP UTT @2-2-2-1T-interleave-level 2-async 0.7ns
1x512 Twinmos SP @2-2-2-1T-interleave-auto-auto
1x512 Twinmos SP @2-2-2-2T-no interleave-auto-auto
1x512 Twinmos SP @2.5-3-3-2T-no interleave-auto-auto
2x512 PDP XBL TCCD @2-2-2-1T-interleave-level 1-async 0.7ns
1x512 PDP XBL @2-2-2-1T-interleave-level 1-async 0.7ns
1x512 PDP XBL @2.5-3-3-2T-no interleave-auto-auto

I tested each w/ memtest to rule out any memory idiosyncrasies. Tried lowering vcore a notch or two so by some outside chance I could duplicate the success of some San Diego owners I've seen...

All the above were met with a blue screen at Windows startup (or shortly there after) at anything above 2.926Gz.

Again, the amazing thing is it could go all day long error free ~3.2GHz/1.67v in memtest. I know, don't trust memtest, but I can tell by my Aquagate temp probe it's putting a good amount of stress on the CPU's mem controller. Windows must really do a job on memory access/allocation... should I be surprised LOL?

And again, temps aren't even close to being an issue since water is keeping this chip at a relatively cool 39C after (2hrs so far) of priming at 2.926GHz. The Aquagate probe doesn't go above 35.2C, thats below body temp LOL.

Simply mind blowing how defined my chip's ceiling is... 2.926GHz prime stable (so far) and 2938MHz gives BSOD... :hm:

I'm not disappointed ~2.9GHz is nothing to scoff at... just wish I could have got to the magic 3g's LOL. With Ozzi's, so far we're 1 for 2... hope others will report their success.

well so far i have my mobo fort530 in the tower with the AIW x800xt still boxed, i just ordered my cpu today and its paid for but pay pal is being gay and makin me wait for check to clear, so i guess within next week ill post some of my success or downfalls, im gonna be on air but some good air, i have a tsunami with 2 120s and a 92 on the side and im running 90c with tornado and ceramique so im hopin i can acheive some decent temps with all this stuff, only think missing still is the raptor and newark 3700 then ill be gleefull, hell i might even hook the old lady up with a dinner night or something.

Nah nvm that ill be in benchin all dam night fauk her :P

If it makes you feel any better, ozzimark's ambient air was amzingly cold. I'll give you guys 3.0GHz on air when my replacement hardware gets back. :D

i had the same problem, but it kinda went away with more volts.. :stick:

also, conrad has a point. see my avatar? that was my idle temp after running all my benches then dropping down to 2.7ghz with 1.45v. this core LOVES cold. i gain an extra 100mhz by dropping temps ~10c

I cranked it up to 1.7v and it still blue screened as soon as Windows desktop loaded. This was @ 12x250=3.0GHz. I didn't think it was good to go any further. No?

i would hope the core doesn't have a cold bug.. or at least not too bad. you have the same stepping/week as me right? (CABSE 0515DPMW)

i'm personally afraid to move my rig with this zalman on it.. sooo much weight on an unlidded core. i'm banking on having water soon.. hopefully within two months. i need to get everything sorted out though, still not sure exactly what i want to get/do :stick:
