With A64 on-die MCH, it's critical the CPU is cooled correctly. Water would be best, but air is pushing it, unless it's great afetrmarket cooler. The Strock AMD cooler I got with my A64 3400 was absolutely the worst HSF ever made. Not only was the fan under powered, it had a thermistor on it. It wasn't a fan that should be running any slower then full-speed so thwe thermistor was a complete joker. For a $400 processor at that time it was a sin. Once I got in under water (
so to speak) the chip opened up. My buddy is now beating my Butt with 30K 3DMark2001 scores at 2.5GHz, while I'm struggling to break 25K at 3.9GHz. I guess speed isn't everything/anything, something?
I guess you have to really tweakl that BIOS, on the A8V
