If this is all Nvidia's got it's not much. This is basically what GTX 480 should've been, and hardly worth naming it to GTX 580.
Ultimately though what matters to me is that either company will drop prices due to competition. I'm just concerned that if GTX 580 doesn't manage to compete against 6900 series, Nvidia will have a hard time dropping its price due to chip size. Of course if rumors are true, that Cayman is the biggest AMD chip yet, it might also be quite expensive to manufacture.
More FUD: Geforce GTX 580 to launch in November
Quote:
We came across some interesting information regarding Nvidia's response to Cayman. The new chip from Nvidia, codenamed GF110 is going to launch in November, most likely before Cayman. AMD set its launch date around November 20 and Nvidia is likely to launch the GF110 a bit earlier.
It is not only that the chip will have more than 480 cores, we dare not to say 512, but all these cores will be improved. Nvidia had more than a year to work on this mid-life kicker, something that can compete AMD's Cayman and could likely end up as the fastest GPU on the market.
First reports indicate that it will get available for around $499 but this will very much depend on Cayman performance and pricing.
The cards are in production as we speak, almost ready to ship at launch. Now its all a matter of politics and deciding when to launch them. As the winter in the northern hemisphere draws near the Cayman and the GF110 will come in quite handy, as both will generate enough heat to keep gamers cozy at sub-zero temperatures.
Sorry, but
FUD = fail
Those specs are so mediocre. I could see them being true sadly. This is not even a midlife kicker, its a mid life crisis. A card trying to be something that its not. If this card is 499 and cayman performs like leaks indicates, than I will be happy to buy a cayman xt at 500 dollars if this stinker is the alternative.
If those specs are true... not impressed. I would rather see higher VRAM, more shaders and a higher memory bus.
64 TMU seems fail to me, strong doubt about this competing with Cayman. Slightly faster clocks and 512 vs 480 is very small improvement for what they call 580, if true.
Anyway, Anthilles destroy all with a big margin.
Another article saying that it has been confirmed that NVIDIA will launch the GTX 580 at November the 19th, with some more specs:

Though this article says it has a 512 bit memory bus, we'll have to wait and see.
nvidia's mid life kicker is a joke ... a big fat joke from the green gobblins .... stupid rebrand ... :(
I think with those specs, we might even have an idea of performance already.

772*1.0567(difference 512 shaders made according to expreview) = 815mhz equivalent with maybe a few percent better because of memory speed.
The only thing that could save this from being a flop if they can get power consumption down and a miracle driver comes.
If the leaked specs are true, then OUCH nVidia. Even after GF104 success, you can't expand this potential little performer for highend segment.
Perhaps GF100 is such a mess and they are really concentrating for 28 nm process round, that investing too much resources on a lost cause is deemed futile. Fudo's still evangelizing the chip, if those specs comes to fruitition, this will be another mud in your face moment yet again. Some people just never learn, but $$$ looks good in your bank account for sure. :shakes:
Extrapolating from GF100 512 SP leaked result from expreview back then, what's the fair assessment regarding GF110 speculated performance ??
We know the card seems cool enough, whether through better cooling solution design, better yield & speedbinning, some sort of respin, or combination of those factors. But i don't think the underlying mArch has changed at all, judging from those specs.
maybe its a simple respin ... they might have fixed the leakage issues ... resulting at less heat + better cooler design might have allowed the rebrand to take place ...
i wish them well for 28nm ... but 40nm is a lost cause ...
A 150% GF104 will kick that specced chip. Well, perhaps not in Unigine Heaven or Stone Giant extreme tesselation "game", but in real world gaming, a 576 SP 96 TMU 48 ROP (3 GPC) 384 bit chip would be plenty fast. Clocked @800 MHz core 1.6 GHz shader, with careful binning & reworking the chip design for better leakage, it still can get around 250-260 w TDP & the same die size of GF100 or even smaller.
It will suck in GPGPU but GF100 will cover that fine & abundantly available in stock (we know GTX 480s & 470s are not selling that well).
a dual reworked GT460 could pull the specs you typed spurindonesia right ???
When I said they need a shrink for a achieve a "real" new generation, you where making all kind of funny comments with  :ROTF: , etc .. How comes you have turned 180' now?
It's will be big a challenge to deliver the performance/power that we expect from new generation without a shrink , both for AMD and nVidia.
As said before, the flexibility of the "old" architecture will deside the outcome between GTX 580 and Cayman.

Nope, not a dual chip card, but a single chip developed from GF104 mArch, expanded 50% upward in execution units count to be exactly, taking advantage of GF104 gaming focused mArch design (much slower DP throughput, but much faster SP throughput with double Special Functioning Units & TMUs per SIMD array that what were important for gaming purpose).
A dual chip card using full fledged GF104/114 has lost meaning since AMD is determined to built Cayman based dual GPU card (Antilles). It doesn't serve you any good if your dual chip, flagship card is totally uncompetitive against its peer/direct competitor. The king of the hill slot belongs to AMD in this 40 nm round with Antilles, and i think nVidia knows it. GTX 580 still has a (long) shot against Cayman XT, but dual GF104/114 (GTX 595 ?) card will fall flat on its rear if nVidia ever dare to put it against Antilles. UNLESS, nVidia knew that GTX 580 is slower than Cayman XT, while GTX 595 could match or beat AMD's best single chip in some cases. Then GTX 595 can serve its purpose as fanboi epeen edition card.
Now, the plot thickens, so GTX 580 seems to be faster than Cayman XT in 3DM Vantage Extreme ? Interesting time ahead, come on, AMD's leaked rumor salvo has been answered by the competitor, sends out some more please. :D
ahhh it makes sense .. so a full on single GF104 modified die could do it ... but how long would an architecture rework of that kind could take is the difference between doing it on 40nm or waiting for 28nm and having something combative ....
huh ... i havent turned 180 .... i only asked if the specs spurindonesia wrote were merely possible if they rework the chip ... like rework the architecture and cut some things down to make it possible for a modified dual 460 to even pull those 576 shaders or so he said about ...
no mention of me saying its ok to rebrand ... .but now i understood that he meant a fully reworked single GF104 .. as in expended enough to call it a new gen ... but 580 doesnt diserve the new gen name if its only a 480 with the full 512 shaders ....
its a simple respin only ... and that doesnt diserve a new gen name ... an evolution of the architecture would ... and that reworked GF104 that spurindonesia hinted at would get my vote as a new gen puppy if it does this ... wich i doubt they would .. but anything is possible in that business
LOL, where's kaktus post that mention 120% of GTX 480 performance with 80% power consumption (~200-210 w TDP ??) info leaked by Napoleon ?? :D
If nVidia does pull that stunt, then Cayman better delivers, cause the bar has been risen.
EDIT:
Like what i've said earlier, perhaps they thought it's not worth the effort (expanding GF104 design is still building a chip from a scratch, easier said than done), or there's still some untapped potential in GF100 mArch design that can be unearthed by simple respin. Question then, why does it take so long if it were that simple ??
I don't care though, as long the chip performs. Here's hoping for a competitive duel beetween Cayman and GF110 soon, with a price war ensuing afterward. November can't come fast enough. :toast2:
Just let it go bro, i know i have. It's also a good, living example of a "lost cause", LOL. :D
120% of gtx480 and 80% of its power consumption ....
