SPL15 If you got straight hands and you are not planning to do something extreme, Just do vgpu and vmem modz. It's absolutely reliable.
I have vmoded tons of mobos and vid cards. Each is still alive.

This card is much better than my last 9800xt.Quote:

What air cooling are you using? Stock or a CPU heatsink? I just redid my heatsink by adding a 1/4" thick copper heat spreader plate to the bottom of a crappy stock Intel P4 HSF. Used arctic silver ceramique and it works quite well. Noticed 4 degrees drop Celsuis (40C down to 36C idle temps).
I'm getting more and more tempted to do the Vmods, but I really can't afford to lose this card yet...
how reliable are the 9800XT mods? I know they work performance wise, but how many of you have burned up cards with this mod when all was well?
I´ve just put the cooling from the asus card and for benching i put a tornado sending air to it.
Just updated my 3dMark score: http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7737400
most of the test ive used the card at 486/418, for car low i used 492/411
when the new prommy arrives (for the gpu) ill first test with out vmods and only then ill do the vmods
later guys
Oh i'm not worried about being able to do it, I've got a Hakko Surface mount resolder station, so that part will be no prob.Quote:

I've already done a lot of modifications to the card dealing with filtering the voltsge rails better and lots of mods on my mobo for better rail voltage filtering. You wouldnt believe how much this improved things!!
How much gain have you seen from the regular Vmods? I've heard from a few people that their memory oc was worse with both mods, and even worse with just GPU mod. fk it, i'm gonna do the mods tonight, what should i be expecting in gains about?
Edit:
Oh ya I have this idea and want your guys' feedback. Since I have this gorgeous Hakko Resolder station, I can solder/resolder BGA components with ease. Is there a way i could get different memory chips that clock much higher and put them on my Vid Card? Also, Say someone had an ultra OCable card, but it blew. I could take those mem chips and put them on the new card.
is there a way to buy cream a da crop BGA memory chips without buying 1000+ of them?
SPL15 Resolder station is great. Realy great.
With only VGPU and VMEM i did 540/860 absolutely without artifacts on crappy watercooling.
In Moscow I can get any BGA mem buying 1+ of them. :)

Everything was perfect, pot at 10kohm, switch it on.... vgpu was giving 1,85.... looked to the monitor.... after like 5 secs blank screen :(....
Really dont know what happened :bsod: :bsod: :bsod:
Fisrt of all, sorry to hear about you card.
Can you please explain exactly how did you perform the GPU mod?. I mean, what resistors you used (1592 or 1597) and which point did you use as a ground.
I also want to perform the VGPU mod on my Sapphire 9800Pro 256 (R360 core), but I'm a little afraid after I read your post as I know how's to loss big money...
Best regards,
KODE.
can anyone please show me the memory voltage measuring point?
You can measure the DDR voltage here.Quote:

Here is the Core Voltage check point on the ASUS 9800XT and the 9800Pro
I couldn't find it anywhere on the net so I desided I would spread it around...
Hi

all is correctly?
thx.
Yes it is!:)Quote:
You can get away with a 5KOhm pot instead of the 10KOhm. It will be real hard to dial in your resistance/voltage if you use a pot that is too big. OR.... you can put a 10KOhm and a 100Ohm (or a 5KOhm and a 100Ohm) resistor in series... get it in the ball park with the 10KOhm... and trim it up with the 100Ohm. The down side to this is that you have more stuff to solder, one more component that can go bad, and you always have the potential of screwing up as the mod gets more complex. Me personally... I like the 5KOhm and the 100Ohm in series (gives me more control)
ALSO... I don't know how accurate this is but.... (I would like to know myself) But I think you can just take the solder point on pin 7 and move it to a ground... Pin 7 is ground so you should be able to take it to one of the ground points on the Molex connector (which is just to the left of the area of this mod) This will mean one less solder point on that poor little chip :) Me like that! :)
I would check it... measure the resistance between pin 7 and one of the grounds on the Molex solder pads... it should be "0Ohm !not open! If it is 0Ohm... that means that they are connected anyway... so there should be no reason why you can't move it from pin 7 -> ground...
Just caught that your question also included the VGPU mod. It's also correct in your pic. But... same thing as above... only this time I know it works as I've done this very same thing. The pic says it all!
Here is my VGPU Mod!
Don't let the pic be confusing... I added a switch and 3 plugs for my multimeter to mesure voltage and the resistance...
::Edit:: - Hot glue is your friend! Can't have your mod bouncing around and breaking wires off! Frag or be fraged! :CTF:
Here lies my poor mem voltage regulator. :(
I do not know if it is dead, but it gave some nice sparks.
This card would overclock great (vmemmod and vcoremod installed), but the mem volt. reg. now has some nasty buns due to 80% air humidity. Can anybody help me? I am even willing to put the AGP 3.3V line on the feed of my memchips. The core and memchips are fine b.t.w. (1.94V core and 3.15V mem worked very well at first).
Hi,
I just modded my 9800pro@xt (with xt pcb) with all the 3 mods (vcore, vmem, and oc) but I'm cooling with air. I replaced the original cooler with a modded soket 7 heatsink and a 80x80 fan (with 60/80 fan-adapter). I also putted alluminium heatsink on the ram-chip
I would like to know how much is the max vcore and vmem that I can rise for a safe 24/7 use, and wich is a safe temperature for the core (as the card have a xt pcb I can see the temperature with ati-tool).
Thanks, and sorry for my bad englisch. :)
With air cooling... even modded air cooling...
Core - 1.96V is as high as I would go.
Mem - 3.00 is as high as I would go.
Just a collection!
But i hope My High res pics can help.
My 9800pro is now vmodded...only core..but ready for the second core mod or memory.
At the moment i reach very high frequencies without any vmods
max 507/438.

You on air I presume?
You clocks get like mine.
I have 540\440 without the memory volt modd. All on air. Gave it 2.2v but forgot to raise the AGP voltage so didn't go past 540
hmm i run 24\7 1.95-1.96v 486MHz core :rolleyes:Quote:
