jt1,
9800GTX+ isn't the only board available carrying a 55nm G92...
They were giving such things on NVision and I have one of them ;)
This die is damn big.
Measure it please ;)

40nm High-End NVIDIA GPUs Slated for 2009, GT206 for Q4
NVIDIA is expected to continue on its monolithic high-end GPU approach with a few notable GPUs that have been slated for Q4, 2008 and throughout 2009. The visual computing giant will be rolling out a 55nm derivative of the existing G200 graphics processor, codenamed GT206. The GPU is expected to be essentially the same, albeit newer silicon process allowing higher clock-speeds, that push up the performance envelope. The GT206 will be released in Q4, 2008., presumably to cash-in on the X-mas shopping season. It is found that GT206 seems to be having problems with its shader domain, which has pushed its launch for that late.
Following GT206, GT212 and GT216 would be NVIDIA's entries to the 40nm silicon fabrication process. Earlier reports suggested that foundry companies in Taiwan could be ready with the infrastructure to manufacture 40nm GPUs by June/July 2009. For the late second quarter 2009, either GT212, GT216, or simply a new card based the GT206, in a dual-GPU configuration could lead the pack. GT212 and GT216 could release in Q2, 2009. The GT212, GT216 GPUs support GDDR5 memory on a broad memory bus. Towards the end of the year however, NVIDIA will have made its DirectX 11 GPU, the GT300.

Are these new 55nm gpu's supposed to be the same price as the old gtx 280's and 260's?
If all of the info in post #258 is accurate I am not upgrading my 8800gtx with a new Nvidia card for at least another year! :D
"Could be" and "Or"...
Same bunk that this thread was from the beginning.
Some of that may come true, but "could be" and "is" is two different things.
Where are we gonna get some news here? All this Fud is becoming extremely annoying.
Already a few days past "22th" October (or was it 22st?) , but still no news on the 55nm GT200 chips. Sighs.. Nvidia isn't making much money on those monster 580mm^2 chips at $200 a pop..
(to myself) Patience.. patience.. Nvidia HAS to do something NOW as ATI's cards are selling better than Nvidia's cards.
!Grammar-police raid!
It's 22nd, not 22th or 22st.
:p
Maybe the OP meant Oct. 22, 2009.
There's something about "22th" that makes me wanna scream; its sooooooooooooo wrong!
I had 3 BFG GTX 280 all defective, one after another, 115c within minutes, then shut down, that is stupid how a company can release such garbage, b/s it was quality tested. BFG is garbage for even selling that card as an OC, poor quality control, or lack of it. I know there are good GTX 280's out there, i had one, an ASUS, but the chance is not worth taking IMO
That is why I have been waiting for the shrink.
Maybe that is why the Watercooled BFG is $100 cheaper than the eVGA watercooled.
My plan is when I get my mobo, CPU and RAM buying whatever top EVGA FTW card is there or a GTX280 current card depending on price. If they come out with a shrink and it's past the step up deadline, I'll just buy another GTX280 as the price will make that attractive. I'm going with Dtek Blocks and Unisinks myself, because I can move those blocks to other cards in the future, and not be stuck with an obsolete FC block and card that cost a fortune.
I plan to have a 120mm fan blowing over the unisink also to impove airflow. I have read they perform better than the FC blocks. We'll see how that works out though on my speciffic setup. Every setup is slightly different with watercooling.
is this thing common or not??..
i have some money now and i want to upgrade if this thing gonna take a month or 2 i might not have the extra money any more :S :(
Couldn't say. My own BFG GTX280 is doing wonderfully. Once I move it to an X58 board, I may seriously consider looking for a second one. But there have been some manufacturing defect issues, and they're things you'd really hope would get caught before they left the factory, so the complaints aren't without merit.
