the RAM undervolts so that might explain a bit why more voltage needed but then again every board works differently so you cannot really expect to have exactly the same results....who runs TCCD at stock dude....common crank it up
temps are incorrect....try beta17 it fixed something with temps so should be more accurate
Just flashed with the beta 17 bios, so far all looks good. The temp readings have really been sorted out. On all previos bios have tried it was reading 33C idle and up to 59C load with a dangerden h20 setup. Now reading 28C idle 41C load (3200 venice 1.65vcore)
you guys are so wrapped up in the temps issue. What's more important is the more annoying overclocking bugs this board has.

I think thats about the cheapest gig of memory you can buy rated for ddr 500. Will be testing it in the AN8 as soon as it comes. For $108 total for all 4 it sure beats 2x512mb sticks at a whopping $172 and may not have 2T issues.
Bios 17 is a waste of time. How come the room temperature is the same or higher than the CPU Temp. 1T problem is still a problem, it doesn’t OC has bios 16. What the hell are those engineers doing.

I tested brand new pair of OCZ 4000VX on my mobo and could not for the life of me get errors out of memtest at 250MHz regardless of timings and voltage used....this is not the second set of these nice sticks that I cannot get to work.....WTF is that all about.....I would understand if I was trying :banana::banana::banana::banana:house value RAM but fark....we are talking top of the range stuff rated at 250MHz....My Corsairs have no problems just getting these to work is frustrating

I think it might have to do with a little resistor that i found different on one of my 3 boards........... What resistor is that you say. Well i can give you a location. I have the Fatal1ty sli board . and it has been flawless using bios 16 ....... 1t works fine for me 1:1 up to aprox 230mhz after that i hafta set it to 2t
the only complaints i have is no OTES ramflow cooler . ( gonna order one tho ) but biggest problem is that no matter what . the 2 Maxtor SATA 200gb hd's i have w/16mb cache will not boot at all .... cant even get into BIOS with them plugged in ............ but have been looking around ASUS & DFI forums as well as Abit forums .. it seems to be a hit or miss issue with the NF4 chipset no matter who makes it ... a lot of people are having the same problem

The Beta17 bios still has the problem leaving trtw at 4 even setting to other values.
The official bios 17 seems to be released now.. i haven't tried it myself yet thou.

Omg, this seems to be the exact same bios as the Beta then, same "BIOS compiled date" on both of them. then wonder when a 18 bios will come?
The Fatal1ty is just amazing, apart from the all out guns abit have gone with its also the sexiest board out the whole bunch of nf4 offerins imo, i have a SLI-D and really want to trade up for a SLI Fatal1ty.
ed- im not liking all this board layout critisism im reading here, its BS, your beloved DFIs are not perfect either, in fact probably less so, and to end all the critisism im going to points things out. first lets look at the DFI SLI-D;

lets start with the DIMM slots, notice the spacing between them? well the spacing isnt any better compared to the fatal1ty, the only real difference is the larger space left in the middle of them, and when considering most ppl obly run 1GB, that middle space on the DFI is useless anyway. and for thoughs with 2gb that space is also worthless as abit gives the RAM otes system on their board vs. a simple bit of a gap, and for the OCers, the active otes system is a lot more useful than a slight gap and having to ghetto your own type of ram cooling.
now lets look at the slot placements vs. the fatal1ty, DFI make the same mistake, when placing even a single graphics card in, one slot is blocked nomatter weather its in the top or bottom PCI-E slot.
next chipset placement, its unethical to to critesise abit for theit placement of the chipset when DFI have it in exactly the same place on their board.
now lets have a look at the FDD and aux power placement on both boards, i cant see complaints eitherway here, placement on both boards are well thought about, perhaps slighty better thought about in the fatal1ty as it actually allows you the chance of tucking thoughs cables underneath the board.
cmos battery placement, both places are fine, and in fact the placement on the fatal1ty i find more ideal, its easier to see and reach without having to navigate your hand under a HDD or something of that nature.
and lastly CPU socket placement, both boards essentially get it right although the fatal1ty users may have difficulty placing 120mm cpu fans in there with the otes cooling.

all in all i'll give the DFI a 8\10 for placement and the fatal1ty an 8.8\10 for placement. now enough of the "abit have done everything wrong" attitude, it sounds petty and childish.
I did some initial testing on my AN8 SLI (still waiting for the Video card and HD I want to use for this). Came with Bios 13 from New Egg. I tried out Bios 13, Tic Tac Bios 13, 14, 15 & 16.
Best so far was 13.
Had a few issues (two normal & one REALLY weird):
1) CPU temp still calibrated way too high with all 5 bios's. 3000+ Venice w/ SLK 948U & a 92mm Delta (80CFM -- wanted to make sure it was cool for this test .. also basement room was nice and cool) running default 1.8 Ghz @ 1.4v = 38 C and 44 full load.
2) Default RAM voltage too low: Used 2 x 512 TCCD/TCC5 RAM. System kept shutting down randomly and many times, would not start up. RAM default is 2.60v. Therefore, I'd suggest -- even when 1st firing this up -- manually set up the RAM for at least voltage. Also, I'd suggest you set the Command rate to 2T if using a Venice -- Just in case. Mine was OK with 1T @ stock settings just to test, but when I took it up to only 210 HTT, had to do 2T. Didn't have time to look into this further though.
3) Weird Problem: the one I have did NOT like PS/2 Keyboard and mouse. I kept getting the warning 'running in fail safe mode' no matter what Bios and what setting. I hit F1 to ignore and Win Xp ran fine -- even Prime and Super Pi. Hmmmm .. Got frustrating. I then started to switch components. Got fed up and decided to switch keyboard and mouse. I used USB versions of both this time. Problem when away .. :confused: Anyone else experience this with PS/2 keyboard and or mouse ???? When I connected one or the other back up, got the 'fail safe' error.
I suppose there is some Bios setting that does not like these legacy devices. As there is no parallel port (and I know Abit released that one 'Max' MB with no PS/2 & parallel support a while back).
Anyway, waiting to get the rest of my parts to see how this kitty will purr :D
I have to say, I was impressed by the speed. My 1st NF4 MB and I noticed that it felt faster than my NF3 250 GB MB - even at only 1.8 ghz on the CPU (stock speed on everything). Also, nice looking MB. Esp. the Heat pipe chipset cooler.
Although, on my MB, part of a thermal pad is hanging off on one of the mosfet HS. So, AS will be replacing those soon ;)
I'll report back when I get the rest of this rig .. Hopefully a better Bios will come out between now and then (unless Bios 17 fixes most of the issues).

the fatal1ty pwns for performance, one example is comparing it to the DFI board, the fata1ty bests the DFI in ut04 by a staggering 16%

Major you seem to have experienced the bios losing settings bug i posted on. When the bios loses or wont hold settings do this.
Shut psu off remove battery and leave jumper on for about 15 mins also hit the power button to help disharge any juice left in capacitors. Apparently using sanyo oscon caps has its disadvantages.
Bugs people have experienced or I have experienced is no overclockability, hard drives just dissapear( arent recognized ), bios settings won't hold, and a sytem is running in failsafe mode message.
I've conviened myself to give it one more try in my game rig, this time with a fresh install of windows and a good clearing of the CMOS as you suggest chew* ;) I would really like to have something different to play with for a change.Quote:

Yah i figured out the issue i got so pissed i ripped out the an8 sli and to my horror the same issue reared its ugly face. I then reset cmos on the fatality with the above procedure and all's well. Currently I'm priming at 2.5 gig with a lackluster 3700+ good stepping bad chip 0517 upbw. temps are phenomonal under load. 77C under load.........@1.49 vcore. Course atm im using a stock but good cpu fan. Its a big old chunk of copper with some very thin fins, came with my old clawhammer 3500, ( fxx 55 or 53 cooler?) anyway im at ddr 416 with oldschool bh-5 with only 2.8 volts. 2-8-12-2-2-6-2-2-1-1-1T timings. I found it real Odd that the HD issue carried over to another board but it was the same bios and its like it reprogrammed my drives or some weird :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:. Anyway I just need a CPU and VIDCARD for my an8 ultra build should be a screamer when its done.Quote:

Thanks man :D Considering the problem occurred on another MB, I am half tempted to switch plans and use the Seagate Drives instead of the Raptors -- just in case (I'd rather work on OC settings than deal with any HD issues).
Also, the 77 C temp at full load: I assume this is more like around 65 C actual?
And I have to agree on the gradual OC on this MB (at least, that was my impression with my AN8 SLI). I was time limited on my initial test of the MB, and I tried to dial in 230 HTT right off the bat (I did a quick set of the HTT to 4x and 2T command rate – but no mem dividers) and it did not like that too much (nor did it like 225 either, lol). But, I was in a hurry, so I was not discouraged. The MB just needs some time, patience, and a little finesse .. then I’m sure it will pay off :D
Mine likes monster jumps just doesn't like 1T for the life of me or 4000VX sticks....I need TCCD again.....
Another note to Major.....the only bios I have seen not remember the settings is BIOS16 :mad:...i never tried bios15......I reckon you should probably avoid 16and have a go at BIOS13 and see what happens...I am happiest at this bios...just had a crack at 3500+ Newcastle and still 1T problem....also playing with a week16 3000+ venice with 1T problem however the OC is looking good so far...did 32M SuperPI at 2.9GHz second go...first run was with less voltage and stopped on 24th pass...bit of burn-in and tweaking and it will rock at 2.9GHz :D.....I want to see how you guys go with X2s before i take a plunge....so keep those screenies coming :cool: .......1T sux 2T rocks....if i still have problems with TCCD :banana::banana::banana::banana: I'm gonna start peaking man....my SuperPI benchies are suffering....I want to go to 24m territory

Yah i suck. Ok i will work on that next. although I wish someone would post pics of the FP_USB 1 header. I'm trying to find out what a resistors pupose is just left of that header attached to an green X16 chip. It is deffinitely different on the fatality then it is on the ultra. And the one on the Ultra looks like it was soldered on as an afterthought. Might i add that an an8 Ultra is just a vanilla an8 with nf4 ultra chip. Which leads me to believe that this may be a way to unlock voltages on the fatality.
Well, it seems that they did more to the 17 BIOS than "Recalibrate CPU temperature" as I'm now ABLE to run my RAM at 1T, whereas before, it would shut down when loading windows.
So, needless to say, I'm very happy.... My RAM runs at 1T now, and I found out my system doesn't melt down when my water pump fails (actually, just a loose connection). The temp hovers around 57C at idle when the pump isn't running.. So that's nice to know it won't blow up should the pump fail..
Oh, and they did recalibrate the CPU temp.. Now my Winchester 3200 idles at 27C @ 1.55v and 43C load.. With a swiftec watercooling system.. before it was around 37C idle and 50C load..

Now onto memory testing. next up is Crucial ballistix PC4000.
Testing at ddr 400 netted good results much like my bh-5.
DDR 400 1/1 cpu at stock timings that were stable 2-2-2-6-1T(4x256mb single sided)
DDR 500 using the 500 memory setting in bios cpu still at stock.
2.5-4-4-8-2T. 1T is definitely an issue with the 4x256mb sticks I have installed. I will try later with just 2 and also test each stick individually to see if one stick is holding back the rest.
Ok scratch the above apparently this stuff is not as stable in this board as I thought it was. Doom 3 crashed after 5 minutes. played around with timings a little and started running prime and it wont even make it 5 minutes in prime. Mind you my cpu is at stock so I highly doubt its cpu issues. I contacted crucial to see what they say and if they can give me a list of timings/bios that they found to work.
Anybody have an issue when using the DDR 500 setting with evrything stock? When I use it CPU-Z reports the memory as running at 129.2 with a CPU/14 Ratio. :confused:
Pay no attention to that. Instead do this. Run sandra bandwidth test at ddr 400 then run it again at ddr 500 if it increases then you are sucessfully running at ddr 500. So far to date memtest 86+ and cpu-z do not identify the ddr 500 setting correctly to my knowledge.Quote:

I'm slowly getting agravated with mine and this crucial 4x 256 mb of pc 4000. Prolly gonna toss it in my gigabyte and see how it does before i pull my hair out. I'm now down to testing each stick individually to see if i got a bad stick and have one of my delta 80 mm fans blowing on it to remove heat as an issue.
Most of the issues went away after I took Chew*'s advice and removed the battery for a few minutes while I cleared CMOS. But I couldn't even get windows installed unless I used 2t, and that was with optimized defaults. I was able to OC to 3060mhz stable using 2t. But with the X2 it limited my Vcore to 1.7v and I need 1.73 to get back to 3140mhz where I was with the DFI NF4.
Crucial ballistix results = the suxxors. Stock cpu speed ddr 500 divider. I'm putting this in my gigabyte now if it passes prime at same timings or tighter abit may no longer be my first choice as a mobo anymore.
Note that crucial rates these at 2.5-4-4-8 and most people can do 2.5-3-3-7 and my timings are grossly loose yet still failing prime............

you probably know this but prime95 gives out the stupidest results, some people prime for 24+ hours and once they hit the games it freezes.Quote:

why do you run Prime at stock speeds
to eliminate my cpu from the instability equasion. and thats actually ddr 500 just a64 tweaker dont recognize it right. plus that cpu barely gets 2.2 gig at 1.45 v so since its my sons pc i dont really like to OC it. BTW its an 0518 cpu and it sux. consequently it has a max case temp of 55C. anyone see a pattern there :)

I'm back on DFI NF4 now
I only really saw a couple of issues with the Abit, using my X2 and 2x1gig Ballistix I could only run 2t even with optimized defaults loaded. I tried BIOS 13,16, and 17 all the same. Also it would hang during post about 50% of the time requiring a power off reset. Also using the X2 I only had the option of up to 1.7vcore and I needed 1.725 or more to obtain max OC on the X2 that I had with the DFI
Major what did your ballistix reach in that board. Aside from 2T. I just pulled my hair out trying to get 4 x 256mb of pc4000 to run at rated speeds and no go. I'm in touch with crucials tech support now which btw they are very cool and aren't like most mobo companies which state overclocking is not supported.......Hopefully they will help me through this issue, if not my son got an upgrade to 1 gig of memory as its now running at ddr 510 at 2.5-3-3-6 in his board....Quote:

I did all of the OCing with 12x multi, I had it stable at 253mhz but that was the max my X2 would do with 1.7vcore so not sure where the memory would top out with a lower multi. I did try a couple of times at 11x and 270mhz but wouldn't boot so I didn't try anymore.

Well I pulled my rig apart 3 seperate times to try the Abit, If your changing from the DFI NF4 you have in your sig then I can save you some time and effort and say DON'T EVEN BOTHER ! lolQuote:

just get the Ultra board and get into it...i smashed my DFI scores with my Abit board....i can't run 2T but ut seems TCCD guys have more luck...i am working on getting some TCCD again to test

BIOS13 is great for me....has 3.55vdimm...i refuse to flash to the other bull:banana::banana::banana::banana: bioses until they get the voltage it's advertised with

good news hey....we have a FX57 to drool over....you better not get any sleep and do some serious OCing when you pop that monster CPU in......and be gentle with Abit....you're probably best off using higher multies...i've seen plenty of people run 1T with TCCD and not too high on RAM up to 280 or so... 1GB kit that is.....
