I've been looking at quad socket motherboards for some time just for fun. An arima board came up on ebay and after googling the model, this gem of a thread came up.
My main use for it would be any heavy lifting that I need done such as encoding bluray movies, VM's, etc, etc. Spare time will be used for either FAH or WCG. I haven't decided yet.
I wanted to confirm that these parts should (emphasis on should) work together.

heatsink & fan I would like to eventually put this in a 2U case (or 3U) and rack mount it. I'll probably have to get a new PSU then. These are a lot smaller than I typically use, but from what I've gathered, these CPU's don’t get terribly hot and with the HE series, this should not be an issue. For now, the case will be, well, cardboard :D

Everything there looks good, except the ram. These boards don't take fully buffered memory. Just ECC registered.

Not sure. Fans spin up but no display, etc from the known working CPU/RAM combo. I have one or two more 'tricks' to try when I get time. Hoping I figure something out as I spent $60 on RAM!

i had that problem - power turned on, fans etc spun up, but never posted. tried different pci-e and pci video cards, 1 cpu, 2 cpus, many ram configurations, never got it to post.

mediocre picture is mediocre. I'll take a better one tomorrow along with testing and crunching! The utility of the right is htop. Left of that is the gnome system monitor. The settings on that camera leaves much to be desired.
The banker box is just a tiny bit too small to fit the entire board. lol
Also, anyone recommend a fan control device? I've never used one for fans controlled by the motherboard.

For fan control i just used PWMConfig, but turns out my opterons locked up at 55 degrees :o Wonder if that was a sign the board was on it's way out :/

Tried encoding a DVD earlier today and got some interesting results... since i'm running off a flash drive, my storage is pretty limited so I put the move on a ramdisk (lol more ram than storage) while the output file was saved to a networked ssd drive over gigabit ethernet. Oddly, it only used about 20%-25%(or was it 50%? I'll try again later to confirm). It encoded at 60 fps, which is pretty good, but that's still only as fast as my 1090t in my desktop.
Anyway, I've started WCG and CPU temps seem to be farily stable:
temp1: +42.8°C fan1: 5335 RPM
temp2: +41.2°C fan2: 5172 RPM
temp3: +42.2°C fan3: 5273 RPM
temp4: +41.2°C fan4: 5273 RPM
PWMConfig works wonders on the noise. I might bring them down a bit, but I don't think I'll sleep with it on anyway.
p.s. I don't remember if anyone posted what the green and black buttons do. Well, the black one reboots and the green one shuts down and then powers back up when pressed again.
w00t, board works again. CPU_1's RAM slots are a no-go, but the other 12 slots work fine. socket CPU_1 gave me issues when I first got the board, so I'm not surprised.

As I was switching my monitor's vga cable over from the desktop that software is running on to the arima board, I briefly lost my balance and ended up knocking the video card halfway out of the pci socket. Immediately the board shut down. I tried turning it back on, but no POST. The fans spin up and the green motherboard light turns on, but then a few seconds later it turns back off. Tried with video card, without video card, Cleared CMOS, tried w/ w/o ram. From what I saw on Google, both the motherboard and video card are completely shot.
I guess I'll just have to order another one... the only question is, do I order number 3 to save on shipping? :D

Hmm I'll just try out the gpu on an older board then. I'd rather not kill the board, but I probably won't miss it anyway. If all else fails, I'll put the PSU back in the core 2 duo machine I have for the time being.
You probably could. I'd say to try it out with the basic version first to make sure that it works. Personally, I have a 14-disk raid 10 installation that uses madam that was fairly easy to setup. Madam doesn't have a practical limit to the number of drives have in the array as opposed to the proprietary limitations of unraid. I/O overhead is pretty minimal too.
Anyone running CentOS? I am going to be starting a Linux class next week and they are using CentOS and I figured I'd use my BEAST for the class. Thanks :up:

Update: So BEAST booted up just fine and started throwing these errors that I had seen before but it still crunched and ran fine. So I got the tablet out and Googled it up and it was a memory error that led me to believe that bank 0 was faulty. So I shut it down and replaced the RAM. I think I boobooed on not switching the power supply off as now it won't boot at all :down:
Yuck. Give it time - CMOS reset and all that. Fussy blighters that they are. Now wonder Arima stopped making mobos around the time ours were made...

Seriously though. I agree with ~400W with 55W "HE" CPUs and a basic GPU; worst-case scenario with a high-end GPU and ~120W "SE" CPUs the board would pull more like 650-700W actual. The thing is; these boards pull entirely from the 12v rail- which at 400W on the DC side means 33A- which is more like the 12v output of a good 500-600W PSU. The high-spec would demand 60A+; typical for PSU in 750-1000W range. Don't skimp on power! Get a PSU of good repute (read reviews) and not one with any of that multiple 12v rail nonsense!

First one is (I think) earlier PBC revision (40GCMG020-B500-005 vs 40GCMG020-D400-100), have extra jumpers and diagnostic ports on-board.
Second one is different version (80-MSVBD0-G0D01-1001)? Network and USB ports are in different place, battery holder is different, some new dip switches and not even single fan connector on-board, etc.

So following your logic, looks for me like it is newer PCB revision (80 vs 40 - maybe split plane power delivery for Istanbul) at early stages (BD0 vs 020). Not sure how to compare G0D01 vs D750. Last section is BIOS revision (my D400 have 1.00, yours 1.06 so new one looks like 10.01 or maybe 1.001).
I hope it's split power plane - the power phases are much different. I note 7 instead of 5 caps per CPU around each socket. I suppose the real defining factor will be a real world test. I sense my manual will be getting an update :P It's the first time I've seen a diff layout on the Arima quad so either way it could be interesting.
On a side note.. if it is indeed a dev board.. dev bioses are usually entirely unlocked.. i.e. unlocked clock and multipliers >.> I'm also hoping for better ACPI so we can run windows server, but I'm not holding my breath. Bonus side is Valve is moving a lot of games to linux compatible so these could make gaming rigs soon enough :P
If i could actually get a BIOS opened up properly, we could see and grab the best bits of each BIOS version, mash em up and see what we get :D
I have bad news.
Yesterday, I set my spare Arima to test components (cpu, memory, graphic, psu adapters), to be 100% sure, all are in working order.
Fedex speed up delivery, and I got motherboard today. First, I swapped components from my spare to new board, turn on switch, fans spun up
light on, but I saw constant 4th LED (red) on and nothing on monitor. On my spare board that LED making single flash, just before monitor turns on.
That new board have bunch DIP switches, so I started playing with that, with no results. After that, I installed Opteron 2378 (Shanghai) - same thing
constant red LED and nothing on monitor. Next was 2419 (Istanbul) - results were same..
In next step, I decided to go back to 8354 (B2) and swapped BIOS chips with my spare - nothing new.
After that I set up my spare board with Barcelona and dropped BIOS chip from new board - surprise - I saw light on monitor switching from amber to blue.
Next - kick in a.. - "Obey Man" welcome me, but it look different (he was smaller). I hit DEL and in BIOS, I went to check AGESA version
big disappointment - same 3.1.1.0. When you look at first page:

So 80MS board is older revision - bad surprise. I'll try to backup that BIOS just for sake having it, and I'll send it back to seller (can't get it to work).

Damn. Good to know though - a copy of that BIOS would be appreciated, maybe it's a bit more.. open than 1.06 (i.e. easier to hack), or have different ACPI. If you could, could you please grab a photo of all the BIOS menu screens (only the main ones)
As a quick test, could you try boot a windows instal disc as well? Quickest way to test ACPI :P could be WHAMI spells out Windows host AMI, but i'm probably clutching at straws here
I have Flashrom backup of BIOS, but it is very unstable. I did it on my spare board (never got 80MS board to boot). In Ubuntu it have huge problem with graphic - (12.04 never started correctly, in 10.4 I have to wait 10~15s for any graphical window to open (terminal working OK). Flashrom was instantly crashing system with PCI-E graphic installed (ATI X300 PCI-E, AMD FirePro V5900 - both working perfect with 1.xx BIOS-es). It was better, when I installed ATI X1300 PCI card (that is biggest difference I found - Arima with this card never booted in any 1.xx BIOS-es), but still after read or write it was locking system. Did not tested any Windows, but for that, I guess, I need some Server version - 2003 or 2008?
7/vista pro/ultimate should be fine - it will only show two cpus, but all I want to see is if the ACPI is complete. Thanks dude

BTW If you stay too long in BIOS, it will freeze.
Windows 7 installation (USB pen drive) do not even start, just continuously rebooting.

I don't know what are you talking about. My two D400-100 Arimas are rock solid. One as cruncher ( I don't even remember, but I think 5 months without touching).
Second one, as a tester, with many hardware changes, survived screwed power supply and cpu, still booting up every time I turn on power. Very solid hardware ( as server one is).
I've got a couple of boards that are sitting idle. One I think is dead hard core and the other I dont know whats its pre-medona problem is. If someone wants them for the price of shipping, PM me :up:

A little off topic so apologies for the bad etiquette on my first post :)
Have been following the thread, reading up on the past posts etc... as I was considering picking up one of the Arima boards and this thread has been an absolute goldmine of details about a board for which, quite frankly, details are scarce to non-existent.
I did in the end decide not to go for the Arima board as it does not seem to be something for the faint at heart and I really needed something a bit more "consumer" oriented. I managed to find a Supermicro board (H8QMi-2-0) which supports six core 8400 series for ?129 which will hopefully be easier on my stress levels but nowhere near the bargain value of the Arima!
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has provided input to this thread, without which I may have ended up buying a board that wasn't really suitable for me.
I'm amazed at what you have managed to achieve with so little information, keep up the good work as I'm sure there are other people out there beside me who've found this thread invaluable, and good luck in your continuing efforts to tame the Arima :D

Unfortunately, that memory will not work. This board requires registered memory. I don't know about registered non-ecc memory though.
Try THIS ebay search for compatible memory. I have modified the search slightly from the one on post #1 since it seems ebay no longer accepts the asterisk in searches.
From other's experience, window's doesn't like this board's ACPI. I'm currently running mine diskless from a DRBL server running ubuntu 12.04 64-bit linux.
Speaking of installing windows.... I am not able to get into my board's bios, it simply hangs on "entering setup". I had wanted to be able to boot from a hard drive, but i guess that's not going to happen.
Anyone else confirm this problem with the 8350HE or perhaps the entire B3 stepping?
B3 stepping requires 1.0.6 to access BIOS
Windows will not install, board's BIOS ACPI is incomplete and Windows packs a sad. I assume the board was designed as an OEM solution for quad socket servers - whoever was the original end user (we figure Google) only wanted to run Linux on them, so Arima cheaped out and only coded enough ACPI code to get Linux to run.
Only ECC REG DDR2 will work.
If you want to run Windows on one of these, you must do it via running a virtual machine. You lose GPU acceleration (unfortunately the nVidia chipset on the board isn't supported for the GPU passthrough code), but you'll still get a large proportion of the CPU performance.

back in time i wan complaining about only one out of the 4 cpus being available in my second board while all 8347HE being GOOD.I remembered reading that one folk here took out all the cpus , cleaned the cpus , with white pencil erasor i add , and blow air onto all sockets and voila.....All 4 cpus are up and running.Soon after i will bw reporting compatibility with HP green edition mobo with the shangai 8380 cpu using ddr 2 800mhz mem .Previously i was using 667mhz mem which lead in dead end.

Hi, I just tried activating a blue board. While I have four of the quad opterons OS2347WAL4BGC, only one is installed in cpu0. 2x2gb ecc pc2-6400 is in the two blue slots of cpu0 dimm2 & dimm3. Also a ATI Radeon HD 4850 x2 DVI connectors. The power supply is an Ultra 700w ATX with two rails: one 24 pin, the othe 8 pin. The 24 pin can have 4 pins detached to make it a 20 pin. There is also a 6 pin pci-e connector for the ATI card. One thing is the PS has all black wires. I cannot figure where to jump the black and green wires to activate the PS.
With the 24(minus 4) pin in the 16 pin slot and the 8 pin and reversed 6 pin in the 18 pin, on start, I see the fans just kick.
Unsure what to do. Your expertise is appreciated.
You're gunna have issues once you go multi-CPU, 2000 series only support running in pairs, not sets of 4

Unfortunately, the PSU doesn't mention voltages, nor are the lines color coded. Pins 1-18 fit fine, leaving two in the wind and the remaining four detached. The other 8 pin, likewise, fit into the first 8 of the 16 plug. Then there is the reversed 6 pin. BTW, the 6 pin had two black wires going to one crimp and the opposite crimp was missing. This repeated on a second 6 pin that came with the PSU. I have no idea where the paper clip would go.
The board was populated with 2347s when I bought it and two 512mb ddr2-pc6400 sticks. I read your manual and saw the need for the ECC Registered. So bought two of those, saw the ECC mark and thought that meant ECC Registered. Now I know I'm wrong and they are not Registered. And that I should have 4 sticks, not just two. Though, early in the thread, it's mentioned two sticks in the blue slots would work.
My main concern is that the board is blown? This is $400 down this road. I'm reading horror stories on the thread of even getting this started reliably and now I don't have the correct CPUs or PSU or ram. Heck I modded a four pin fan to fit on the three pin plug.... I guess the question is how to test for it being a blown board? I can use a voltmeter to test the PSU output. But I am hard pressed to spend anymore on what seems to be a losing proposition. I honestly thought I was following your manual correctly.
Ok, attempt three to post via iPad. Researched my Ultra 700w PSU. Found an image of the pinouts of the all black mobo 24/20 cable. The all black EPS 8 pin coming from the PSU hole, is unknown. Question: the pinouts indicate a variety of voltages, +/- 12/5v and +3.3v. The +12v is 40 amps for 480watts total and is on two pins, 10 and 11. Do the adapters to 8pin EPS use these two pins? Or are they Molex to EPS?
Regarding the notion of a burnt out mobo: since all pins are 12v or less and I hadn't grounded the PSON pin to activate the PSU (which does work with PSON grounded BTW), is it possible the board still lives?
Also, from what I've read the first digit of the CPU model number, 2347, indicates the max number of mobo CPUs allowed on the board with it. I take it that four 2347s are not controlled by the mobo to work in pairs, as opposed to quads? So the max CPUs I can load of this type on the mobo is two? So, buying 4X 8347 series is necessary?
And, of course, proper ECC REG ram. My intent was to use the 16 CPU rig for Lightwave 3D rendering. Just play really, but it would be far faster than my XP 3.4GHz P4, 2GB ram system.
If I can't get this to work with a minimum of expenditure, it'll be easier to save my pennies on my limited disability income to get something else. And sell these parts. Recommendations?

The standard 24/20 pin plug from a PSU will NOT run this board, chances are it will damage it, hence why we use the EPS4/8 pins and PCIe 6 pins only. Thought that was pretty clear :/
Yup, you can only run 2x 2000 series in a quad board
ECC does not mean ECC Registered, they're two different types of RAM.
I guess that means a special 12v only PSU? Or Molex to EPS adapters that carry only the 12v line? Also, not sure how 5 and 3.3v would damage 12v circuits. I can see the board drawing more than the PSU circuits can provide and cause damage to the PSU, assuming its breakers don't kick. Guess will have to get 2 sticks of ECC-REG that actually say that on lable. Ones I bought were claimed as registered. But not on lable. I'll see about getting Molex to EPS adapters and see if the board will kick with cpu0 and ram in slots cpu0-1 and -2. Gonna be a couple months for the money though.
What I'd be concerned about is reverse voltages and whatnot by running the atx. Good chance the board has protections so you may be ok :) Where are you located btw?

It doesn't fit normally, I had to
1) remove drive bays
2) remove back panel and mobo tray
3) make my own back panel and mobo tray
so it's not an easy fit, but it can be done with some metalwork know-how
