Use a DMM if you want to see it yourself ;)

Also, can you tell me how does the board read the vDimm? It does not have a chip that does that function. That's one of the differences between the P5E and the Maximus. AISuite just can't read vDimm, because even the board can't know that, caused by the lack of the sensor chip. So the program looks at the BIOS, it see the number of steps you have varied the vDimm from 1.80v and puts them in its own list, showing wrong values.

The only way to read vDimm from the P5E is with a DMM. No sensor chip = no possible software monitoring.

So were does one measure V-dimm voltage at on this board??? Pics please???:cool:

Hey again, i've done a memtest, which it failed, so i thought i'd try my old (very simple) settings, which literally involved putting the FSB to 333 and the RAM to 666 (667 in bios) all voltages on auto, did a memtest, the RAM is showing no errors at all, but the CPU fails after a few minutes in orthos on CPU stress tests, which it also did with your recommended voltages.

Any recommendations?

Guys did you even read my reply about the Vdimm issue? Measuring the voltage at the Dimm slot itself I am reading 1.917v when it is set to 1.86v in the bios using my DMM.

Soooo basically there is a .057v increase between what is set in the bios and what is actually being applied to the RAM itself.

Do not beleive AIsuite at all it is wrong also the bios is wrong. Just add a +.057v offset to the bios setting and that will give you the amount being applied to your memory.

BTW it is pin 64 on the DIMM slot so fell free to test it yourself just make sure you have some needle probes and a steady hand to do it.

So, then the X38 chipset is very memory friendly. I am running pc2-6400 memory at 1069MHz at only 1.90v (~1.95v actual). The stock voltage for my memory is 2.0 ~ 2.1v at 800Mhz! I have been able to boot at 1186Mhz with 2.16v, but the performance gain was negligible, so I went back to 1069Mhz.
So, I wonder if there is any real performance gain in getting really fast memory like pc2-9200 (1150Mhz) or pc2-9600 (1200Mhz) memory.

Have you tried higher NB voltage? With 4 modules NB needs more voltage.

Heya, using all four dim slots will put heck load more stress on the memory controller/NB

You be better getting for instance: OCZ ReaperX 2x2GB PC6400/PC8000 using on 2 banks for much better stabilty.


You can try increased NB voltage, increased volt to Dims also as again running 4 dims is morestress! Focus on getting your system/Ram stable first before OCING

i had 1.4 v on the NB, 2.2 v on the memory and the cpu was 333*9 at 1.3v

No one can tell u the magic settings. Start increasing voltages one by one and check the stability.

Finally got permissions to post, only took 4 weeks or something.

Just wanted to add to this wonderful thread with a success story, as there have been few, but wanted all to know it is possible to get it working.

Either I just got lucky with good memory or a good board, it is too early to tell, but I have not had one issue with this combination to date.

In bios, all is set to Auto except the FSB (400) the memory (1066), and the multiplier (9).

Can't tell you what the memory voltage is as that is not displayed in the bios and I don't run any of ASUS's junk software.

Had to push 1.45v to the NB to get things stable.

Might want to double check that mount. You shouldn't be getting 70°C load temps on a TRUE at 3.2Ghz unless you've got either a bad mount or bad airflow in your case.

A motherboard screw.

BIOS AUTO voltages
475 x 7 is stable, 480 x 7 not...

BIOS AUTO voltages
445 x 9 is stable for 5 min max

BIOS AUTO voltages
425 x 9 is stable

So the point is, my NB can easily go up to 475 FSB, my CPU can also do this. He can run fine 475 x 7, he also runs 445 x 7 (x8) stable !
But 445 x 9 (my lovely wanted 24/7 use) he is only stable for 5 min...

So the CPU and NB can handle 475 FSB, but the chip itself can not handle the higher speeds. The Vcore is not the problem, he boots 4ghz @ 1.38Vcore, and he is fully stable on 1.42Vcore... I also tested 445 x9 on 1.5 and it doesnt matter. Now my thought is, that the GTL ref and/or the PLL are wrong getting wrong voltages. Maybe even the NB.

So what do you guys recommend me for 445 x9 use ?
Vcore I will keep on 1.42, but what with the other voltages etc ?

If anybody can give me some advice ! I have none experience with PLL/GTL ref etc... I'm also for the first time on a qaud and first time on 4 x 1GB...

Just measured from that pin, got 2.4v, I have to check my bios, but I'm pretty sure I have it set to 2.3v. I'll do some more measuring from that pin after and post results back here when I'm done.

I think the cooler is mounted right im getting around 44c at idle and 66-67 at load. the 69c was after 10 hours of prime test... Do you still think it is bad ? maybe i can double check the mounting and the thermal paste.

About the air flow u can see from the pic here , do you think using the optional asus fan is making bad air flow ?

Measured from the pin Cranox said,

2.36v bios = 2.4v DDM
2.3v bios = 2.35v DMM

Ok, so according to most of the results here, I should be looking at a ~0.05v overvolt on vDIMM compared to what's set in BIOS, except that isn't actually what I get. In BIOS, vDIMM is set to 1.9v, but if taking a reading off the pin that Cranox said, I get a vDIMM of 1.9v. I decided, just to satisfy my curiosity (and 'cause I have a new DMM that I wanted to play with :ROTF:), to try and see what the potential difference of some of the other pins on those chips are, and I noticed that two pins gave much more expected results, ie about 1.94v.

Can anyone who's bored and got a DMM have a poke at these two pins (marked in the attached image) and see what their voltages are relative to BIOS and what Cranox's pin says? Could just be a coincidence.

Also, does anybody know where I can measure vCore from on the P5E?

I have a Sunon KD1212PMB1-6A 120x 120x 38mm fan that I want to use as my CPU fan cooler. This fan has a standard 3 pin female fan header connector.

It is rated at 6.8 Watt. That equals 0.57 Amp. The actual ASUS X38 board I am interested in getting is the ASUS P5E3 WS Pro.

The reason is that this machine will also have a dedicated 8 port Raid Card using one of the PCI-X slots.

Does anyone know the answer to this? I have looked on the ASUS web site. I have downloaded the manual for this board. All with no luck.

I cannot afford the expense of finding out the hard way that it does not support a 7 Watt fan, after connecting it and fritzing my new motherboard.

If you're really worried about blowing a fan header, you can always run the fans straight off the PSU. You can either buy a molex to 3-pin fan adapter, or else wire up some of your own by using some spare molex plugs and what-not.

But sorry, I can't help you as to how much power a fan header can supply. I've had no trouble running fans that pull about 0.3 A @ 12v, but nothing higher than that.

6. CPU, chassis, and optional fan connectors (4-pin CPU_FAN, 3-pin CHA_FAN1~2, 3-pin PWR_FAN)
The fan connectors support cooling fans of 350 mA~1000 mA (24 W max.) or a total of 1 A~3.48 A (41.76 W max.) at +12V.

I haven't looked in the other manuals, but it would seem logical that the rating is similar.

Actually in the P5E3 WS Pro manual, on page 2-31, it lists even HIGHER numbers:
9. ... 350 mA~2000 mA (24 W max.) or a total of 1 A~7 A (84 W max) at + 12V.

Wow, 1 Amp per header on a normal P5E? That's a hell of a lot more than I was expecting...

Hey guys,

Got my new Corsair Dominator 1066 RAM yesterday (P5E + Team Extreem = No Go .. ugh) and was benching a bit.

Got it up to 495x9 (memory 1188)... got me a SuperPi 1M of 10.3s. Not bad. Not bad at all.

However .. when I try to run 3Dmark .. it won't work 8 out of 10 times. At first I tought my Creative X-Fi was the problem, as the problem was gone when I took it out of it's PCI.

However now I can't get 3dmark to run again .. it crashes/freezes just after loading the first test. Playing Counter-Strike Source for 10 minutes does the same trick.

I have tried a billion settings in the BIOS, other drivers, both Vista and Server2k8 (my converted-workstation/OC-bench OS), newer beta drivers, other PCI-E slot for VGA, some Kingston PC6400 ram etc. Nothing seems to relate to this problem. I can't get it fixed.

Motherboard has been acting up before .. should I RMA it (takes forever, unless I ask for credit and buy a new one / other motherboard .. are their any other _GOOD_ x38 boards out there?)

Beside the crashing .. PC is sickenly smooth.

ps. also tried other VGA and also tried running outside the case (bare motherboard on cardboard. Oldskool) .. nothing helps. Ugh modern ASUS quality.

ps2. I also tried the pencil mod however it doesn't that great for me (almost nothing at all ..). Still seeing MASSIVE vcore drops in windows / under load. Had to push it up to 1.57V just to get 4.4ghz. Pretty sick for a 45nm.

After many many sets of ram, i finally found that 4x1gb pc8500 dominator ram, runs absolutely perfect on this board.

funny thing tho, they run at 2.00 bios, and are rated 2.2v on the sticks.

Just flashed to BIOS 0601, and now my temps are messed, tried reverting to 0502 but hardware monitor is showing 12C CPU and fing 28C NB when its really 22C CPU and 48C NB, anyone else has had this wierd problem?

I have 4x1gb of Crucial Ballistics. These sticks run at 1066mhz 5-4-4-12 with 2.02V(2.07V actual). I've heard many people with these sticks dying on them, and the stories scare me. I'm crossing my fingers (can't feel them anymore:p: )they don't quit on me all of sudden.

0601 is not good at all. They fixed one thing but broke many.
I was getting Prime 95 error on one core, but different core everytime, within 40 minutes, while 0502 gave me very stable o/c with the exact same bios settings.

I would avoid it if you could .. yesterday a mate of mine bought another Xtreem kit .. also didn't work on his Intel board (don't know models on top of my head)

I had the 1066 xtreem memory kit .. checked the codes .. had D9 on it .. it just wasn't stable. and by not stable i mean 10.000 memtest errors in 5 secs. 6 hours non-stop tweaking (ugh) later, I found a config that the modules did like. However after 5 mins memtest it still gave 8 errors or so. Bit more tweaking and the RAM worked (and by tweaking I mean setting every voltage to 0.02V precisely) perfectly however after 10 minutes of doing ANYTHING, the motherboard would just hang itself. Could get into windows .. even game .. but after a few mins .. hang...

Luckaly they are a snap to return in 100% original state so my webshop gave me 100% credit. Only lost some money shipping .. oh well.

Another lession in life: Don't buy budget overclocking memory. uhh wait .. Don't buy anything budget. It sucks. Balls.

Really happy with my Corsair Dominator 1066 memory .. runs 1200 great on CL5-T2 .. haven't tweaked it futher then that (was at my CPU limit i guess at 495mhz FSB). Oh well .. I'm not a real die hard overclocking these days .. This thing runs 3,6 ~ 4ghz great .. don't really need that extra 500mhz :)


ps... btw the RAM worked great in BIOS 0107 .. however I had to use 502+ for my Penryn 45nm as 0107 doesn't support 45nm properly. 502 and up were giving me RAM problems.
So perhaps it could work for you if you like older BIOSes .. however that's a big compromise .. I wouldn't like it. Get a brand new x45 (or x95 or something) motherboard .. oh wait my crappy memory doesn't work on it .. wish I hard paid 20 bucks more :)

I think they did something to the bios that made it less compatible with the Ballistics. They need more voltage to run stable on 601 at the same setting than on 502.

I haven't experienced this and i'm running a pair of tracers on my P5E.

My p5e wont boot with my g.skill pc8500 at all now. Memtest the ram in another PC for 6 hours, no probs there. All it will post with is a dingy stick of generic ddr800.

I've almost had it with this board.

Hi guys, i have upgrade my bios to 601, and i felt the same, when i upgrade it to the 502.
What i mean is, they have ajust the vdimm, because with the 107 i set it to 1.94 and i could get 1100 with cl5, and now i have 2,1, so i thing this is the real. But of corse the AIsuite is a joke - 2,55v.
So, for what i´ve read in your posts, my real vdimm is 2,157, isn´t it?

Right now the 0502 & 0601 BIOS doesnt allow me to use a 4:5 ratio on my ram, let alone do it while selecting the 266Mhz FSB Strap.

So right now my ram is set @ 504 or 1008 "effective" // 4-4-4-12 2T 2.06vDIMM (2.1 real), this using the 333Mhz FSB setup and 5:6 ratio.

Wich one is better one for OC´ign, P5E3 or P5E3 Deluxe?

Has anybody had any raid issues with Vista Ultimate??? I can see all the drives, but cannot for the life of me get it to format/assaign drive path/letter.. I have done all the updates/drivers/ect, it keeps finding a new "device" and trys to install a driver for it.. There are no hardware conflict issues in device manager either.. This is killin me.....:shakes:

I had a problem the Vista not recognizing a partition, and it kept trying to install a driver everytime reboot. In the end, I ended up reinstall the whole thing and it took care of the problem.

i'm running vista ultimate and windows server 2k8 (great OC-performance) both on a RAID0 on the Intel ICH9 ... no problems what so ever.

And there is a major difference in this new Superior bios 601!!! It is by far the best bios to date..

Just because some of you can't see that or make use of it does not make it bad!!!

I agree with WZ, this is by far the best Intel board i have owned, great memory clocking potnential... Runnin my 8gb at 1108, with the quad at 3.7 per... I am completly happy with it.....:cool:

Just wish that there was a "layman's" explination of the bios settings, and what they do/affect... Like the GTL reference voltage settings, that eludes me, so it's just trial/error at this point.....

WZ. I bet your cpu is not arriving to Easter if you go on working 24/7 with 1.6 V :D

same here, Great MoBO & yes it's the settings BUT by reading the this & the Asus site P5E forums that ,I feel it's the G.Skill i'm running , the ddr2-1000 pc2-8000 , Seems everyone who is running these stix & the simular G.Skill's as above .. report no problems

I have so manny problems with my G.Skill PC8500 not even posting.

I decided, just to satisfy my curiosity (and 'cause I have a new DMM that I wanted to play with :ROTF:), to try and see what the potential difference of some of the other pins on those chips are, and I noticed that two pins gave much more expected results, ie about 1.94v.

Can anyone who's bored and got a DMM have a poke at these two pins (marked in the attached image) and see what their voltages are relative to BIOS and what Cranox's pin says? Could just be a coincidence.

Also, does anybody know where I can measure vCore from on the P5E?

I got 2.35v on all 3 pins with 2.3v set in bios.

I myself do not care too much for any other G.Skill I have 2 sticks of the 2 x 2gb PC2 8000 PQ. I feel this memory is only good for mild o midrange clocks with a lot of rendering work to do.

My other E8400 is running on my P5Ke and has been for several weeks only it is air cooled. and that processor has lived on nothing less than 1.482V and most of the time 1.610V. It 5 weeks and counting. My Q6600 on a P5E running daily at 1.608 V since last October and doing fine TY. Oh yes I have a 2.4C Northwood that has been on 1.675V for going on 4 years and gee still no SNIDS. My sky isn't falling, sorry to see yours is. Brama you have found the wrong forum. That sounds about on par with what others have found (+.05v over settings)

My 2x2GB G-Skill DDR2-1000 PC2-6400 (F2-8000CL5-PQ) will not run stable over 1066 :shrug: but that's good enough for now. I guess I can go 1:1 and run CL4 instead.

Hmm fair enough. I dunno if the readings would change much from board to board, and from RAM to RAM, but I'll be getting a 2x2Gb G.Skill 1000Mhz kit in the next week or so, so I'll have a bit more of a play around with voltages then...

screwtech02..... Glad to see you are willing to get to know your board better!! They really are spectacular boards. I will tell you that my P5KE-wifi is also a great board!! On the 8.5 multi it will take my other e8400 to 549 fsb and it is only 1/10 of a second slower than my P5E on super pi. It is in the 3D benches that the X38 chipset begings to flex it's muscle over the P35. the difference isn't big but it's negligible. So read on...........

WZ, if im reading into the "GTL" volt setting correctly, its supposed to be approx 2/3 of whatever cpu volts your running??? I guess the same would apply to northbridge GTL also??? :confused:

Users that flashed to BIOS 0602, would you be kind enought to tell me if your temps are reading normaly? Ever since BIOS 0502/0601, my CPU temps are reported as 10C lower and NB temps, 20C lower...

haven't really taken them beyond 1066mhz... no point for me.. im just finally happy i got 533 5gb without issues.

bottom line is 4 of these work. I actually recieved a set of 4x1 dominator before the current one, where one stick was bad... i was VERY close to just sending all the :banana::banana::banana::banana: back and run my 2x2gb 800mhz xms2 ram... but that add to shopping cart button and the "-23%" pricetag on the 2x1gb dominators from another site just made me do it.

thank god it was only the stick. I got my money back from the one firm and got the ram somewhere else, and now it finally works.

Wierd things going on.

I just bumped FSB to 450 and set RAM 1:1 and start stress testing and my CPU temp jumped up to 90c:shocked: (Everest and AISuite). Both cores were at 52c. OK, so I boot to Bios and check CPU temp, 38c. Boot back to windows and CPU temp reads 27c, both core are 35c. I let it idle while I read about the 602 bios ;) and I hear my CPU fan spin down. Checked Speedfan and sure enough, running 50% (Q-Control disabled) and CPU temp back to 79c (cores still at 34c/35c). After a couple of minutes the fan went back to 100%, but the CPU is still at 79c as I type this. I'm still on Bios 501 that I flashed when I built the system and have not seen this behavior at any FSB (up to 515).:shrug:

Another change with the 602 bios:

601 Bios: Vcore on Auto with E8400 reads a too high 1.360v in bios
602 Bios: Vcore on Auto with E8400 reads about 1.185v (forgot to note exact voltage)

I have my Vcore manually set to 1.24375v with an E8400 @ 3.6Ghz. Bios Reads: 1.208. Windows Reads: 1.216. Windows Under Load (with Loadline Calibration On): 1.192

601 Bios was a "beta" according to the Asus Website. No info on 602 bios. If they follow their pattern,
602 should not be a beta. If anyone finds the release notes to 602, let us know!

When the BIOS hardware monitor says 12C for the CPU when its really 21-22C, there is a problem. Its also a noted issue as far as Im concerned over at the Asus forums. I use air cooling and ambient temps are 21ish degrees... As far as I know, its impossible for standard air or water cooling to be below ambient.

Its moot point, really, since everything else works:P

I have an E8400 @ 3.6Ghz. with an Ultra 120 Extreme. I wonder why my core temps are reading normally with bios 0602 while others are having problems. Or are these temps too low?

Well I just got the new 0602 bios in an it runs much better than the 0601. I am running my Q6600 at 3730mhz on air 8x465 with my Transcends aXeRAM DDR 1200 at 1200mhz before i had too run them at 1103mhz.

I updated to Bios 0602. No problems. The only change I can find was to expand the 'tRFC' memory latency manual settings.

I installed the update from my harddrive. I created a 9MB FAT partition and EZ Flash instantly recognized it. This is easier than using a flash drive.

I am Having problems with random shutdowns i can prime it but after primeing it sometime it just reboots???

Something different with 602, i cannot acheive the same overclock with the same settings, without upping the volts more.... And the memory timing "expansion" looks to be pretty basic.....

602 seems to be better with overclocking the memory.
mine will not go over 960mhz stable on 601 and now seems to be working ok at 1066mhz
i like the new bios :)

Alright, I flashed 602. There is no improvement in the G-Skill, still capped @ 1066 (not the board's fault) but now my CPU temp reads 9-17c and setting vCore to 1.365 in Bios shows up as 1.334 in CPUz, Bios monitor and AISuite, although I'm 100% stable @ 3600 now at that voltage.

SPD Tab in CPUz now only shows only module size, WTF?

Its important to keep with the times, new hardware and old software versions don't mix to well. :shakes:

THANK YOU ASUS for this bios. fixes all my 1066mhz ram problems.

my crucial ballistix tracer 8500 2x1gb use to fail at stock settings with the 0502 and 0601 bios's. With the 0602 bios, i just completed 20passes of memtest :) finally.

i've noticed that with the 0502 and 0601 bioses, memtest reported a bandwidth of 5593mb/s at stock speed. The latest bios reports 4895mb/s. so i guess to increase stability, they reduced the speed a little.

finally i have a stable system with no random BSOD's from ram errors :)

Now, which bios is the best? Just the newest?
