Hey Hicks121, great job on the crunching. Could you please put some sort of shield up on your avatar though? Every time you post, I get blood splatter on my display. Kinda messy not to mention the biohazard it presents.

Great day for the team but I think the stats were a bit screwy yesterday and today.
Yesterday I got 24K and today 58K..
Added and divided by 2 makes sense..
Mine as well for about 2 days .A low day, then next day WHAM 1.5 times normal output.
yeah...
Speaking of, anybody planning tax time purchases yet?

WE ROCK!!!!!
You will likely see a slowdown over the coming week because of the holidays. It's to be expected and nothing to fret about.
I try to focus on the positives. Team membership has tripled since the beginning of the year, and so has daily output. I have no idea where we will be six months to a year down the road. But I'm proud of all the members who have contributed to the cause. Have a few beers on me. :toast:

Hey, it's what I wanted for Christmas, Santa didn't bring it so I made it myself!:D
Just brought up an E2140 system, my girls can't believe they got a computer...
Now if I just had their regular monitor fixed... Their ViewSonic 91" LCD seems to be DOA, but I may can still fix it (it was a salvage to begin with) in time for some Christmas joy...
PS2 is also dead, crappy wiring around here...
Some of the low numbers have been my fault. My e6600 was running at 2.4Ghz instead of 3.51Ghz and I did not notice until my stats seemed low. Damn "Old Timer's!" :shakes: Sorry team.
<mental note> check your damn machines daily!!!! :yepp:
Nice Christmas present.:)
I plan to take advantage of EVGA's upgrade program. I send them my old 680i board and $90 and get a 780i in exchange. Will find a nice quad-core to go with it. The advantage of the 780i is that it supports 45nm chips. So I can choose either Kentsfield or Yorkfield. The 680i board has served me well. It's been crunching WU's non-stop for over a year.
Looked at my LAN, I see only 10 rigs showing. That is not good at all. Good thing is I have the next 8 days off to whip the farm into shape.
God, it feels good to be off! Finally.
Also, found this at a link Sierra Bound posted...
I'm looking forward to hitting two billion. At our current pace, we should reach it in seven months. Of course, if we increase output, we will hit that mark sooner. So get those hamsters working!:)
At least we are keeping it close over Christmas Holiday period ;)
Easynews 4,488,616
XtremeSystems 4,245,448
The team has passed three million results returned. This, to me, is more significant than passing a billion WCG points. That's 3,000,000+ results available to researchers. Way to go, team.
Ya my quad is down:shakes: , will be having it running full steam ahead, tonight:up:
One other interesting tidbit. Team 2ch is now less than a billion points behind Easynews. At their current production rate, they should overtake Easynews in about seven months. Pretty amazing when you consider Team 2ch was averaging less than 30,000/day back in April.
Agreed. A little group of "gamers" with their overclocked PC's.
When I first came to Xs and started to get a feel for the computing power that was here I knew this was possible.
It was all in finding those people that cared.
There are more people here at XS that feel as we do.
We just have to find them and open their eyes.
We are doing fine. We started the year with only about 230 members. Now we're up to 782. If we can increase membership to around 900-1,000, I think we will beat Easynews on a regular basis. I'm sure we can find a couple hundred more people to join the cause.
There 2 ways(or more) to look at a problem.
One is to come up with a grand idea that solves it in one shot.
That's nice if it can be done but sometimes it can't.
The other is to "pick" at the problem. Slow but it can be done.
We find the people as we can. We ask friends, neighbors, etc and we add people one at a time.
That is what has happenned this past year and it does work.
If anyone had said we'd be at 4+ million a day a year ago most here would have said they were nuts but it is a reality.
Things happen, both good and bad, but overall we have grown by a huge amount and if we keep pushing and looking for people we will grow further.
The team I have my rigs parked with now http://www.dslreports.com/forum/disco
run a much more inclusive WCG forum. They emphasize the accomplishments of the individual members over the power of the team. They know that the oldtimers are going to keep contributing so they spend lots of energy keeping the new recruits motivated. Not just one milestone thread but everyday making new posts to congratulate milestones to members that they see as important.
They keep an internal stats site http://team-discovery.net/wcgtops.html with a rotating member responsibility to keep it updated day to day.
They have a communal project http://www.tdprojecthope.com/ that is run like a corporation that has a board that is responsible to contributing members.Because $$$ are donated.
I will be moving on from http://www.dslreports.com/forum/disco by Jan 1 and donating to another team. But I will go back there some day
Actually it is a meaningfull number as it's comprised of a group and the group doesn't stick to any one disease but people do them all.
I personally just do FAAH and on one machine do HCC.
Since most teams or groups do a mix of projects as we do it is a meaningfull number so it is comparing apples to apples.
Results are meaningless. Interesting. Then why do you do this? Points mean nothing to researchers.
And what do you mean by "help all the sciences that we want"? Some people here just want to run the cancer project. Are you saying they are wrong for thinking that way? Don't come back here to flame.
I agree with sierra bound, This is our pep talk thread. No Negativity please.:shakes:
We brag about points and mark highlights each member hits, but that is not our driving goal, I recently tooted my own horn cause I didn't realize I was over 2Mil but prior that, I pretty much never checked my pts, but pick on other members all in good fun, but if we started to focus mainly on points, i feel anyway that, that would start to negatively affect the team.
Our focus should be, for the most part, results, and as many as we can send in the better, the parallel to that is the pts, and in that, it will always fall second to gettign the work done.
That is how I see things anyway, and I think I can say that many others here see it in a similar light.
Uh, I thought the whole idea behind these projects is to get as many people involved as possible. More people (and machines) means more results processed. Isn't that the idea behind grid computing? This is a direct quote from the WCG site:
Or am I missing something here.Quote:
Grid computing joins together many individual computers, creating a large system with massive computational power that far surpasses the power of a handful of supercomputers. Because the work is split into small pieces that can be processed simultaneously, research time is reduced from years to months. The technology is also more cost-effective, enabling better use of critical funds.
Also, you didn't answer my question. If all these things are meaningless to you, then why do you do this?
I guess the issue is we are all different people and see things differently.
BUT, and the big BUT is that we are all after the same thing.
Helping to wipe out disease in a way that we can do.
I don't care which project anyone runs, if they are in it for points or for the results or whatever puts a timgle in their shorts.
What matters is that they do the work. The work is all that matters.
Another point that has to be accepted is that milestones of any type, points, WU's completed or just hours run will be mentioned as it is a way of measuring what others have done and a way of saying Thank you for your help. It "ain't" ego or a need to be stroked.
I can get that by turning on CFS and shooting down enemy planes..:D
Last I want to say that amongst us, there should be no arguements.
We all want the same thing, just voice it in different ways.
Most of us came to these projects for different reasons. Mine was to fight cancer and to do my little part to contribute to make this planet a better place for all people.
I rarely check my numbers but do so to make sure my machines are doing their jobs, the points are a measure of work completed and a sign of our dedication to this team and to the science. People such as DDTUNG are an inspiration to us all and his dedication speaks for itself.
It appears to me that we run a diverse set of projects to try and help spread the help across the sciences and every work unit returned just might be the one that is the Rosetta Stone.
Rammie, we all miss you here and would welcome you back if you ever chose to do so. I wish you and your family a very Happy Holidays and wish good health to you and yours.
The team is already successful. It's ranked number three in the world. The only two teams ahead of us both have much larger memberships. And we all know what motivates the members of one of those teams.
But what good are members if they are not completing and submitting work? How does a lot of inactive computers help science?
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...postcount=1046
Wasn't that what my post addressed?
I've only been here for a few months but I think I have a good sense of what most XS'ers are about. Members are more the independent, free-thinking trailblazer types. Maybe not Type A's, but definitely not type B's either. Maybe the term "Ace Slackers" sums it up. For the most part we're not contrarians for the sake of being opposed to something, we just don't like anything that smells like a herd.
I was at grid.org for several years and a lot of people tried to cultivate a sense of camaraderie. I thought it was ok although there were many times I thought I would gag. But I didn't say anything unless I had something to say. The problem is that you get a culture of conformity and when something really is wrong, no one wants to stand up and observe the obvious.
That's not how things work here. Yeah you've got you're fanboys, but that's something different. People here go their own way and aren't looking to have their hands held.
It's my kind of group.
<glances @ his Slacker title................
You ever check out my Stacker Slacker thread..........there are a WHOLE lot of slackers there :yepp:
I get called Captain Obvious alot............wonder if that is supposed to mean something.:wasntme:
then it seems you don't really know people if you want to make an assumption.
I dare you to call me a sheep.............
I came here of my own choice, not because someone told me about it, I found it, and XS on my own.
That makes me a sheep for choising where to put my time and energy?
For helping others when I can how I can?
I think you need to really think about your choice of words.
There is no "Shepard(s)" here. No one spews ideals, as that is a matter of free choice, because if you want to start calling us sheep, then you can start labeling anyone that wants to be a part of a group a "sheep" because they desire to be a part of something?
hell, then billions of people are sheep, oh wait that means you are one too..........oh wait, what is the word for that? Oh, umm hypocrite?
By calling others sheep, when you are one yourself, you have just lost any credibility you remotely thought you had.
I think what you have to both understand and except is that there are many types of people that join the teams.
There are the ones that come comitted and know what they want to do and stick with it. These are what I call the "core" of the team and I know they will be here today, tomorrow and next year.
Maybe 100-125 people.
Then there are the others that come for various reasons.
Some to try it out, some for something different, some for bragging rights.
Some of them stay, some don't and thats ok. Not everyone is willing to put up with the heat, electrical cost, etc of doing this long term.
Not crucified, but you have to understand that these guys put a lot into this team and most of them can get very defensive about it.
I don't question your dedication but I think you have to step back and realise that not everyone thinks as you do or is motivated exactly as you are.
This is a case of many different ways working together for a common goal and the competitions do help to bring people in.
I'm not saying you have to agree with it, but you should accept it and learn not to let others ways of thinking bother you.
that these guys put a lot into this team and most of them can get very defensive about it.
Only2 posters since mine has put as much into this team as I have.
SB who started questioning my motivation and you who put this together and kept it.The others haven't contributed nearly what I have @ WCG and Rosetta.
BYE
Someone that is truly helping science does not need a team to help...
EDIT=Forgot Scott who had the only positive response.
Thank you
Rammie,
I can agree with your underlying message and appreciate the useful suggestions of changes. However, its not the message that bothers me but rather the tactless and abrasive method you've chosen to communicate it. Do you expect that a statement like the one above would be greeted warmly, or in any way constructive? I think not, and it belies some of your true feelings which you are not speaking, but communicating nonetheless.
You aren't being buried for being a free-thinker, you're being buried for being an angry NON-thinker and you shouldnt be surprised if some "sheep" should come along and take his proverbial pound of flesh.
Speak freely or troll elsewhere.

my original post.Tried to help.Got :banana::banana::banana: on for making suggestions that work other places.
I guess I'll just go troll elsewhere with my angriness. That's been my style since I've been here.
One of the best parts of WCG is that we usually get along and don't have the bickering that takes place in other sections.
I work under the assumption that we are all after one goal so there is no need for dissension here.
Can we bury this line for tonight and walk away friends please?
Thanks.
Yes, I saw that and it was greeted warmly by Dave. Then 7 minutes later (the post after Dave's) you go and snipe S_B, and mention that "results are worthless". This played no small part in helping to color your previous post, which could easily have been read as obscurely contemptuous but worthy of the benefit of the doubt.
I'll say it again: Its not your message. It was your manner.
-SS
I'm going to close this for a little while so we can all take a breath and think about what is really important.
Call it an intermission, will reopen in a while.
Thread opened..
Ok, the sun is shining, birds are chirping, it's the day after Christmas and love is in the air.
Now if your not in a good mood I'm sorry but I can't fix all the ills of the universe. I can however ask that we deal with one another civilly and hopefully as friends.
Food for thought: The written word is a lousy medium in which to communicate ones feelings.
I am in the middle of reading James A. Micheners "Alaska" and realizing just how well a excellent writer can convey a thought. Many times I've gone to try and express an abstract thought and had to search for the words.
I'm fairly smart and pretty well read. If I have to think and choose it may well be that others may have to also and many times use the wrong words to describe their feelings.
What may be perceived as a flame may have been well intentioned.
I just ask that you think on this a bit.
Now to go over to another thread and give my new found friend from Oklahoma 67 infractions for making that thread!
Ah, now Dave it's an appreciation thread not a flame Dave thread...........;) But if you want i can start one of those too! :ROTF:
So, back to the reason for this thread initially...LOL

Bad luck on Xmas day / day after guys and girls...good job though... :D
On to RAMMIE's original post re: keeping / adding new members...I like some of the Discovery ways...always good to keep people motivated by letting everyone know what they have put in...it will work for some...but as Dave put it, the core team (which I would like to be classed as one day) will keep on going no matter what. Most of us (out of the current membership) do really see the benefit in what we do...and that is important!!!
I am kinda new here so I won't even try to say that I know what's going on. I have stayed here for a few reasons. First off because I think WCG is a worthy cause to be involved with. The notion that I can play a however small but significant part in finding a cure for things like cancer and aids is very rewarding. All I need to do is give my computer something to do when it has nothing else to do. I have even recruited an ex-girlfriend and a few co-workers to join our band of merry crunchers.
I also like the people here. There is a more laid back attitude here that is an encouraging change from other sections where strife and bickering abound. I have this amazing respect for people like DDTUNG who does more in one day than I could do in 6-7 weeks. That's committment on a grand scale. I also like people like S_B and MM as they've been helpful to me when I've had questions. Phelan1777 is a friend who's been to my (former) house. Now we are a bit more distant...but still stay in touch.
In short we all get along. We don't bicker or cause undue stress over things. I am saddened to read the last 35-40 posts. Sometimes we have to agree to disagree in order to get along and not upset the balance of things. Is it really important to convince someone of your view on a topic? Sometimes, despite our best intentions, that other person believes strongly about what they believe and won't be easily swayed. So why resort to flaming and name calling? As my grandpa used to say....if you can't say something nice....don't say anything at all....
I have this ever growing file I put most of this stuff into so I don't wind up getting gray hairs over things. It's labeled "Life is too short to be upset over this"....
Rammie, in your defense, I did enjoy hearing how another team motivates it's members. We can always benifit from the diversity that comes from seeing how others accomplish things. Thanks for sharing that with us.
Please, in the spirit of how this section is normally run, can we table any ill feelings or the need to express our disdain at a post that mildly upset us?
Thanks everyone,
~Philly~
Dave please delete this if you feel it is inappropriate in any way. This is just an observation of someone who is new here...
Rammies style is abrasive... but it is just his style. I think his intents are fair. And even I know that having rowed with him before.
I thought this thread got closed
At any rate, keep crunching guys. All my machines are working away while I spend my week off playing my new xbox360.
Sir, I might be new to this team but I have been dedicating my time and resources since 2001 at UD.org. I never questioned your importance or motivation, I just stated why I got into this.
I thought that you made some very valid points for recruiting new members and I am sorry if I came off otherwise.

Nice crunching today, team. Not bad for a bunch of sheep.;) Actually a prefer hamsters.:D
Well, my friend loaned me a quad to try on my motherboard, and, well, what else makes a good long run test for mosfet temperatures? This could be fun.
I am glad to be a part of the team. Although I am a newcomer, I definitely have "the bug" and will be here long term. I do enjoy reading all the posts and think this is a great thing to do. Hopefully even the small amount I contribute IS helping. *
* Plus the warm fuzzies are awesome
Every contribution is appreciated, both big and small.:)
Yes. Thanks for joining us. Good stuff, no matter what. Weappreciate the participation and having new teammates.
I started getting my farm back in shape, some. More to come. Some things won't show for a day or three, some things left to do.

Even the dog looks jealous...
Now, back to the stats (from free-dc.org this time)...
Users Returning Work : 275/647 (42.50%)
To get the results we have from 275 of us, this is impressive right now...
And this is Easy's stats:
Users Returning Work : 945/2176 (43.43%)
So we have 670 less users returning work and coming up with a lot more results...we seriously do kick butt... GREAT WORK EVERYONE!!!!!
