hi guys!
First of all sorry for my english;)
i would like to improve the oc of my 2900pro 1gb.
At stock voltage (1,1v in 3d) i can get about 880mhz/1100 in bench and 850/1100 in games.
With atitool 0.27beta8 i can't save modifided voltage in the oc profile because when the card switch from 2d to 3d it returns to default or 1.1v
In internet i have found quantum force 2900 bios editor so i modified my bios improving voltage to 1.25v
After flash i got black screen even if changed dvi port.
I tried to backup the original bios and after reboot the card didn't function , always black screen!
So i decide to change version of atiflash and i remake the flash using the Xt 1gb version !
Now the card function very well but i would be able to change votage because i would push my core over 900 stable.:D
I'm under professional watercooling
My temp on stock voltage in full mode are under 43°C
Take a look over here: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=165389
oh lawd what did I do?

Seriously, how do I fix my crossfire?
Ok so my Sapphire 512mb 2900 pro turned up a couple of days ago, and it turned out to be a 256bit version! Sapphire don't even list a 256bit version on their website!!
Even worse - can't get it stable past 755Mhz on the core (mem OCs to a respectable 1080Mhz though).
Rivatuner says that the vGpu is 1.08v so perhaps this is limiting the core OC. Is there a bios version that I can use to raise this? It stays under 70'C at load so I assume there's enough headroom to play with there.
How much did it cost?
It cost me $269 NZD
To put that in perspective, a 3870 would cost me $409 NZD, and an 8800GT would cost me $408 NZD.
So it's still pretty good value. It outperforms my old 320mb 8800GTS (which would now cost me $325 NZD :p ).
Oh, good, you didn't get screwed.
Other than a new bios theres ATI Tool (buggy but the only option). What does yours idle at btw?
it's not set up at the mo but from memory it idled at 58'C at default fan speed (33%?) and 51'C at the next step up (37%?)
the fan is unbearable over 40% o_O
ok so I'm trying AtiTool 0.27b4 but I can't see any voltage control options? rivatuner also won't let me open the hardware monitoring page.
this is on 7.12 drivers btw
Updated:
W00t, with some more tweaking i'm at 940mhz :p:
http://www.hardware.info/images/user...s/002353-8.jpg
And still benching.
How do you get the voltage to stick?
I use an 1.3v bios. I can run the card on 935mhz for only 10 seconds on this card, so i have to set the needed voltage in about 10 seconds for i get a black screen. I will try an 1.35v bios, but i still have to bump the vgpu to 1.45v to bench on such speed.
Is'nt there a bios with a default 3d voltage of 1.5v or 1.6v?
Max i can find is an 1.35v bios, but i need way more then that
Hey guys,
Once again I come in search of the answer lol.
I'm using Vista and XP dual boot, I would like to use ATI Tool in Vista, but I have activated Overdrive and it keeps its settings no matter what other program I use. Cant find a way of disabling it.
The bad thing about it is that it does not set up clocks for windowed Crysis, it keeps the 2d clocks, so I have to keep it @ 1680*1050 and lower things...
I just wanted to disable the damn thing, I have looked around and found you need to disable ati hotkey poller, but it does not show up in Vista and the only service related to ati that is running does not allow me to disable it...
Might as well use DX10 if you can for Crysis, even with some fps decrease, but I would rather play it windowed on high or very high settings than medium at fullscreen...
Has anyone come across the answer? I just ask myself... Why did I enable the thing?... lol
behave!
running in windowed mode always uses 2d-clocks...
only switching to fullscreen 3d enables the 3d-clocks.
why do u need atitool? do u need more than 1.35v on the gpu?
there is a trick to get all the dx10 goodies in dx9 mode in crysis.
Thanks for your input mate.
Overdrive is very conservative... I can only get 900 mem max, and I know from XP that my card goes up to 1000 easy, that is one of the reasons I wanted to use ati tool. Other would be to use voltages (I dont want to flash my card yet... as I'm not sure if I'll keep it that long) although I know they're buggy on ati tool.
Also, I know about the tweak for Crysis in Windows XP, but its not dx10 (how can XP use an API that does not have?) so I dont believe that some effects will come through from Vista to XP. So the talk of ppl saying that it runs faster in XP with very high settings than Vista would be of course true as it does not process some (hardware demanding - I know cause in dx10 I cant have the same GPU speed I have on dx9, have to lower to about 750 GPU) DX10 features.
If you can enjoy dx10, even in a primordial stage of what it could be, you might as well enjoy it and leave dx9 for 3dmark... lol
Behave!
Im new her but thought I would share a STUPID moment:D
After reading alot in these and other forums about the 2900pro being able to be flashed to XT speeds I started looking around for one.Your not gonna believe this ...I found one for 179.00 can. So being excited and wanting to crossfire my existing XT I ran out and bought it,got it home and flashed it with an XP bios. This killed the card after trying everything to bring it back to life I happened to look over at the box it came in and my hart sank when I read 256 bit. I managed to exchange it for another one.(didn't tell them that i flashed it)
My kids now own that card and I still run a lonely XT:eek:
I have O/C the pro to stock XT speeds and realy dont see much difference between 512 bit and 256.
Im just waiting to see how you guys can make these faster maybe through bios or other means and for the price maybe buy another and x-fire:D
Currently O/C to 750/950 7.12 driver stable----memory doesn't seem to be a problem It will go higher but not much in return
I used AMD GPU tool for O/C and run with six pin on card trid with 8 pin and no diff.
Any ideas would be great ( I don't mind trying stuff)
OOH that's good to know I shouldn't flash my 256bit with a 512bit bios :P
Yea I didn't even know they exsisted...there was no mention of it being 256 bit on the site nor is there now. Oh well live and learn...can't complain though the card works good and real good for the price! There doesn't seem to be a great deal of info on these cards yet for O/C (bios and voltage increase) hopefully it won't be long...see if I can kill another one... LOL
Tought I just share a pic of my (homemade) cooling of the VRM area.
Coooler made of an old Athlon heatsink. Recommend a non conductive paste between the cooler and the mosfets. (AS Ceramique).
Initially I had hoped this was sufficient, but had to add a 80mm afterwards.
Temps around high 50's (Celsius) after 2 hours Crysis (900@1.30V)
So if you have some spare time..:D

Very nicely done.
I noticed that too and put coolsinks on them already a few weeks back . (i even thought for some time that those chips where the Vregulator chips , because anything which becomes so hot can't have a heatsink on it i thought :)
It didnt help anything , they keep getting incredibly hot .
Then again , my heatsinks where smaller than the pic above , also i used thermal pads to stick them on .
A 120mm is blowing over them .

no hard mod;) set volt in atitool 0.27 :)
ah OK, so you are putting up with the having to set clocks and then voltage afterwards nonsense? :P
EDIT: if I set clocks higher than ~870, the comp crashes, regardless of how volts are set before hand, since I assume it jumps back to 1.15v on setting the new clock. how do you get around this?
it helps if you bios flash to 1.2v ind 3D

anyone else's pro (and XT?) have red LEDs on the top of the card that flash briefly when you first power it on?
my cards have those red LEDs.
they flash up on startup and whenever there is a problem with the powersupply.
I have those red LEDs too and they allways flash up on startup. I think it's normal.

Quantumforce2900 bioseditor don´t work on 256bit card, anyone know how to editor bio´s on 256bit edition gfx?
Nice thread Nick
I have picked up a couple of 512 Pros from Newegg for cheap this past week. I know from reading there is a way to overclock the XT in Crossfire. It seems that the Pro bios runs smoother than flashing to the XT bios. For that reason I would rather not flash the bios.
1. Is there a way to overclock the Pros in Crossfire?
or if not
2. Is there a modded Pro bios with higher volts and clocks?
hi runmc,
first check if u got the 256bit or the 512bit mem interface version of the 2900pro. if u got the 512bit version u can use QuantumForce2900Editor.exe (just google for it, i think techpowerup has got it up) to modify the bios of ur 2900pro. u can also read thru the 40+ pages of this thread to find some modded bioses. but it´s easier to just dump the bios off one of ur cards with atiflash and then edit it with the quantumforce2900editor. just set the 3d gpu and vram clocks u want and voltage (goes up to 1.35v in bios).
new record on watercooling 1.35v 982/963
Again, NICE! :toast:
ty Truckchase!
And another result with my new(old) Q6600;)

Hey guys I picked up a 2900 Pro and added it to the rig in my sig crossfire with the 2900xt. I ran 3DMark06 and got 19517 3DMarks http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=4959749 with both cards over clocked in CCC. The 2900xt is water cooled the pro is running stock air cooling. Question is will I benefit much by flashing the pro to an xt, and is it worth the money to get a x38 board?
if u get the pro to run at xt speeds it may be even a little faster than the xt. some people even thought about flashing their XTs with a modded pro bios ;)
Are there any modded bios for a sapphire 512mb pro available for download? I do not think I want to try the hex editor, I do not trust myself...
MUOB (mod ur own bios;) )
http://rapidshare.com/files/71500253...IOS_Editor.zip
just dump the bios with atiflash and mod it with the editor.
ur 2900pro is a 512bit?
So which ones do I change just the ones I circled?
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/8901/aticlockvx7.png
Flashed my 2900 xt to 930/1075 1.25 water cooled and now it is slower than it was stock. I get 12804 stock in 3DMark06 now I get 9344? Do I have to reinstall drivers or did I do something wrong?
so is the general concesus that a overclocked pro bios is better than a xt bios?
I been recently hearing this mentioned here and other places.
I recently hit some hard times and sold all my high end stuff and SLI g92's and my sexy $170 512bit 2900pro will be here today.
thanks
Can you OC in crossfire with overdrive? I read something that you have to change your default position of monitor ( http://www.nordichardware.com/Guides...lse=516&page=2 ),but is that only for ati tool or I need to do that even with CCC overdrive?
don´t go over 999 on the memory... but 930 on the gpu should be alot faster than 740.
3k lower is alot. did ur cpu score also decrease or is it as high as in ur stock run?
@quake6: with the cat8.1 drivers u can oc both cards with overdrive. u can oc them individually by choosing the card u want to oc in a dropdown menu in overdrive. no need for changing primary displays when using overdrive.
YES. you will pass 20k on your first run i promise. i just did this run to see if 2900pro bios is really faster than 2900xt... and it is. worth 200pts. this is my every day running speeds though so im sure i can get higher, i could even load 7.11 *non crysis hotfix* and it would be worth another 300 points...
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...76/2900PRO.jpg
here is my pro bios i just made for this run. 1.2 volts so with a good fan profile in atitool or similar program it stays below or at 75 when under load.
Sapphire 2900 Pro hynix 1.0 512mb 512bit bios from techpowerup edited with qf bios editor to 833 Core 985 Mem
i wonder if #2 was one of you guys?
I dunno if this is mentioned somewhere in this thread already but how can I get some kind of driver options if I just use the display driver?
I am having trouble Ocing no matter what i use or do when I have CCC installed.
With just the display driver and riva tuner this 2900pro 512bit does 850/999 on 1.15v no problems. Thing is I have no driver options or menu of any kind liek this.
is that what you use buddy ?
what problems? when switching to 3d does your computer crash? if so, ive already cracked that one.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...165389&page=10
start from this page and keep reading to the end
I replied to that thread, specifically on your findings and with some questions lol.
basically the problem is with getting any overclock stable over 8.1 overdrive max clocks.
Using various other means I am certain the card is good for 850/1000 but the minute I go over 900 it seems nothing works, no 3d shift. cant use rivatuner to OC memory and atitool sucks and there's nothing else.
I guess i should try 7.11 or your modded inf with 8.1 and rivatuner...
I not concerned with 3dmarks
I found that with 7.11 I can bring my ram speed up with rivatuner and although overdrive is not unlocked it sees the speed, everything seems like its running correctly now and I can clock to my hearts content with rivatuner. Also AA looks much better in COD 4 with 7.11
Does the 7.11 driver pull a nutty with quantum force modded bios like 8.1 does?
I have uninstalled and reinstalled so much since yesterday i could DIE lol
I wanna do 1.25 bios mod, cuz from what i see I may be able to get even faster than 850/1000... I am on a sapphire XT bios, is this better than just leaving the stock pro bios in?
Thanks for all the help and info, 7.11 driver makes a world of difference.
You can not overclock in crossfire with 7.11 can you?
Ok, yea I figured out how to do the bios with help from this thread...
I didnt figure it out but I grabbed the card1 bios with 1.25 that zen put up. (thank for this)
I gotta try it today but i am lazy. Plus the card runs 852/976 out of the box.
Download the bios editor and follow the instructions that are in the read me txt file http://rapidshare.com/files/71500253...IOS_Editor.zip
Oh ok, yea I did not have any problems with the Gigabyte board either. I think I figured out why the bios I made with Quantun force gave me worse scores. I only changed the one highlighted in bold 3D clock state 3 setting. After I changed clock state 2 and 3 it worked. Do I need to do anything to those last two settings in the editor? I noticed by checking some of the modded bios some are changed and some are not? How much difference do you think a x38 MB will make over the P35?
Greetings everyone,
first off my rig is below:
AMD 6000+
Sapphire HD 2900 pro (now XT)
4GB Gskill 6400
ASUS M2N microboard
I successfully flashed my sapphire 512-bit HD2900 pro to an XT. and ran it flawlessly on my XPsp2 setup. Everything was fine and running beautiful until I decided to install Vista.
First I installed vista x86 ultimante edition, ive been runing it on my laptop for over a year so i decided to put it on my desktop to experience dx10. After my mobo driver installs etc everything was fine and works great.
However as soon as I installed the vista ATI Readon 2900 series drivers it says it completed sucessfuly then it props for an installation report which says my chip is a RS690 (don't know if thats relevant) with some other info. Upon restart nothing changed. First thing I noticed was I couldnt' and still can't access the control panel in anyway. Windows welcome center refuses to launch, and windows takes a quite some time to load upon start up. This is very frustrating. I tried to go back in and uninstall the drivers just to find out windows doesnt recognize my videocard.
I didn't think this was a big deal since I wanted to install the x64 bit edition to utilize all 4GB of RAM but after same install same thing. Can't access control panel, welcome center or anything that has to do with my computer hardware. everythig else works fine. I have not updated my windows yet however I didn't think that would have anything to do with my video card being recognized.
any help would be greatly apperciated.
Is that fact that I cant even get 10k in 3dmark06 because of my x2 chip?
Anywho, what voltages have you guys settled on as the safe range for these cards? My card doesnt like to go much over 800/950. Its really hard to find the max though since only 3dmark06 will show any errors and I only have the free version that takes forever to run. Even then it doesnt artifact, it just crashes.
3dmark06 is highly cpu bound. u won´t get 10k with an amd x2 under 3ghz.
i´m getting 10k with a single card and 12k in crossfire. this shows that at an resolution of 1280x1024 (standard 3dmark06 res) this benchmark is very cpu dependent.
my cards won´t go much over 900 on the memory. i did a few runs at 930@1.35v/900 but this wasn´t really a gain in fps in games or score in 3dmark. so i just settled at 845/900 on stock voltage.
i think 1.35v is still safe if u´ve got proper cooling or turn the stock cooler up to 100%.
Wonder how they managed to make it cpu bottlenecked with those simple little scenes, low fps, etc.... :( Must be for intels benefit since that doesnt carry over into actual gaming (my first card fast enough to notice). Ohwell. I got the card up to 833/945 on stock which is good enough for me. Great little (huge) card.
Now closer to 17k:D
