I had the same problem with my NB heatsink( getting 54-60c), I had to flip it around 180 degrees but now my Enzotech xUltra120 wont fit that way so i'm not sure what i'm gonna do.. Pwm get scary hot also use caution:devil: ! Prepare to spend some more $$$ on this already expensive hot board.
Honestly rather replace my DFI 680lt then my Enzotech but thats just cause i havent been having much luck with this board.:shrug:
i think this makes sense cause the NB HS only has two heatpipes and with it the way sammich has it the pipes are closest to where the 680i chip sits on the board...Quote:

Put me in the throttling category, having the same problem. I'm running on air though and have a cooling fan over the VRM. If you look at page 88 of your manual you'll see the options in that screenshot for thermal management but seems like with this bios we dont have that option now?Quote:

TM1 and 2 processor throttling when core temps aren't going over 65c.
Seems to be related to PWM Temps, however once it trips, even cooling down the PWM it wont reset from throttling under any loads..
I can disable it with RM clock, but it shouldn't be doing it in the first place. However I am at 367*9 stable on my quad now running unlinked.

Ya'll got EIST or C1E enabled? Not familiar with this bios but make sure you disable all of the cpu features that will throttle down when idle...just throwin ya some food for thought in case you haven't disabled these lil boogers...

I can stop it from happening with RM clock by disabling TM1 and 2 throttling.

Have you tried taking off the pwm and getting rid of the Thermal Clay(yes clay lol), its a tedious job prepare to use a toothpic and qtips though. I added some AS5 and I believe it helped, at least i can touch the heatsink for longer then a 2seconds now:DQuote:

I could be wrong here but if your heatsink is now cooler to the touch (since you can now touch it for longer than 2 seconds) than the AS5 is most likely not conducting heat as well as the factory installed stuff (if the heatsink was hotter before than it would be safe to assume it was getting more heat transfered to it before)? I went through this same thing on my eVGA after replacing the same clay stuff with AS5. It ended up being that my factory installed heatsink just wasn't making contact with all heat producing chips after the reinstall? Anyway just something to think about...Quote:

Yeah, I should avoid commenting on stuff I'm not intimately familiar with... I'm not aircooling my components as you know... but I have my stacker 830 configured such that the four fans on the door/rads are all blowing into the case as well as a fan on the lower front.... no exhaust fans at all and there is a considerable breeze of warm air emanating out of the blow-hole.
I'm sure you are right in that you are better off with more fans than less when air cooling.
virtualrain do you have any screen shots of your bios options, just to make sure there isnt something i missed concerning this cpu throttle issue? Maybe its mislabled.

Well, i've got it all wrong, but I like it :P, I have one of those cases with alot of holes in the side panel, free air flow right over the top of the vid and cpu..
Air intake in front and rear, top fan on cpu blows down, chipset blows down, exahusts out the side panel..

Any idea why Raid5 doesnt work on this board? I purposefully degraded a R5 array to see if it would rebuild without error, didn't work, second attempt, no go.
is it possible to carry over my raid-0 from my evga 680i to this mobo without breaking the raid array?
I would be willing to bet the DFI controller will recognize it just fine if you keep the drives on the same logical connectors when you do the swap, the problem will be any mismatch in drivers for peripherals... which is only an issue if the array is a system partition. If it's just data, no problem. If it is a system partition, you should uninstall all drivers for devices not present in your new system before shutting down the old system for the last time.Quote:

I also tried seeing how high I could run 1T and got up to 900MHz but found the performance worse because it was running out of sync. I really need a BIOS that will let me set the x8 multi so I can try to run 450x8 and run the memory synced at 900MHz 1T!
I also tried to see how high the memory would run at 2T. I was able to get it running stable at 1120MHz at relaxed timings. Not bad given it's rated for 1066. It might do more with more juice, but it was clear that 2T even at 1100+MHz could not match the performance of 1T at 800MHz...

hey virtualrain, it looks like you're having lots of luck running 1T with this board. From your testing, is 800Mhz CAS 3-3-3-9 1T 1:1 link+sync faster than 1200Mhz CAS 4-4-4-12 2T 2:3?
I can't say for sure. All I know is that 800MHz CAS4 1T is faster than 1100MHz CAS5 2T so I would expect this would hold true for your scenario as well.Quote:

Thanks for the tips guys - Agree with Raju, have shipped from the US before, and been stung on shipping and customs charge's. Europe is a definate option though. Unfortunately HPM seem to be out of stock. I'll keep an eye on their site and hopefully some will come back in. At least is listed, and theyve had some before... definately ahead of the UK! LOL!

Hey guys, there's a new Beta BIOS (521) on the DFI site. It's dated from last week but I think it was posted yesterday. It looks like the 4C is now for extreme processors (unlocked multi) and non-extreme processors use the 2C (not sure but that's how it seems).
I won't have a chance to try it until this evening.

Just a guess since this was reported as an issue in the previous BIOS (Link). It would really be helpful if DFI could be more explicit in the change log... surely this isn't the only change.
well winflash went fine... although it did stop at 12% and just sat there. thank god i let it finish cause it finally came up and said it was a success.
so far i can see a couple changes. the cpu shutdown temp defaults to disabled. and strangely it is underclocking my CPU by defaulting to an 8 multi.... with the last bios it correctly defaulted to a 10 multi but now it starts with an 8.
GTL values still seem mislabeled. i will clock around with it a bit and see if its any easier.
ahh... they finally fixed the temp labeling in the BIOS... NB and SB are now properly labeled... no more PWM stuff
Max multiplier still only 10?
After playing with my DFI NF680i for only a short period of time it ran my QX6700 at 3400Mhz prime stable for 8 hours @ 1.45vcore
At 3500Mhz overnight I woke up to see the PC was off, so either it reached its max temp of 90degrees (which I doubt... it's sits around 80 degrees all other times while priming at this voltage) or it crashed and didn't boot up.
CoreTemp log tells me it didnt' reach sky-high temps either, taking into account the 15degree difference between CoreTemp and SmartGuardian (BIOS). I think it crashed at about the 2.5hour mark which is a lot longer than I thought it would last tbh!
I'll push for 3550Mhz tonight and see if I can get it to crash sooner, so I can narrow down where I need to focus the tweaks.

Eek last person who was running a Galaxy with this motherboard was having the same problems at Stock speeds.. I get the shutoff as well with my Thermaltake 1000w havent really tried stock speeds though.

Search back in this thread for Nugzo's experience with the Enermax Galaxy... His problem was more severe so it might not be the same issue... your problem might not even be PSU related but if you find it's the same it would be the second such issue with this PSU and board combo.Quote:

On a happier note, in hwbot my comparable 1024 and 32M SuperPi speeds are the fastest at whatever frequency I set my QX6700 to :) It's even faster than several that run a higher frequency :)

I am not suggesting my CPU can do more than 3.6GHz but on all my other boards the CPU would either fail Orthos or reboot the system rather than just shutdown which leads me to believe this thing/problem is a temp or reported temp shutdown issue.
The shutdown still happens on the latest BETA BIOS (521) & the shutdown temp is disabled in BIOS even though none of the temp reporting programs get to the max shutdown temp.
It would be interesting to see what you make of it when you have a play tonight.

its a known issue that if the PWM overheats the rig will shutdown unexpectedly so my guess is the PWM getting too hot. unfortunately we don't seem to have a temp sensor for the PWM so there's no way to know when this will occur.Quote:

to test it i'd put a 120mm high-speed (~2000 RPM) fan blowing as best you can on the PWM and run your tests to see if the shutdown still occurs. at least then you'll know if this is whats causing it.... although mounting such a fan for long-term use would seem impossible with the layout of the board =/
I have measured the load temp of the PWM with an infrared/laser thermometer & it measured mid 50's under load. I have also put a 70mm fan over the PWM heatsink & got the temps down to low 30' & it still shuts down.Quote:

This to me means it's NB or RAM causing you problems. Small FFT's fit in the CPU cache. If you can run small FFT's for hours then your CPU is stable. If it fails blend then your NB or RAM are causing errors. Jack your Volts on those two and see what happens or loosen your timings.Quote:

My thermal shutdown is normally set to 85oC I only disabled it to try to rule the thermal shutdown out which it didn't. I am currently on the new BIOS & its just the same.

Hey Craig, it sounds like you were several steps ahead of me then... I wish we could get to the bottom of this shutdown issue.

There's also a BIOS mod community playing with this board called "Rebel's Haven" (never heard of it)... The seem to think we all have cherry picked parts over here! (Couldn't it just be we are good overclockers?! :D)

If the board bows slightly there is a chance that the central mosfets fail to make decent contact with the PWM sink.
One thing you can try is to use some extra Ceramique under the PWM sink to ensure some form of contact at all times, make sure you use non conductive/non capacitive thermal paste. Ths may help the shutdown somewhat, juction temp at the mosfet will be substantially higher than the 50 degrees you see on the heatsink.
Make sure you are careful if you decide to remove the PWM sink, do not skew the heatsink with excessive pressure..

Raja I will get some Ceramique & give that a go on the weekend along with ensuring the heatsink is flat.
The rig is running Orthos small fft's at the moment (2 1/2 hours so far) at 462.5 x 8 3.7GHz with a 70mm fan on the PWM heatsink & a 120mm blowing down between the CPU & NB toward the long chips in front of the PWM heatsink. The heatsink temp is mid 20's & the long chips are low 30's.
One thing I now notice is Smartguardian is running very close to Coretemp (high 60's low 70's) maybe its the fans maybe its the later 521 BIOS I will investigate later & post my findings.

I have always heard and read explanations that were way above my head that the 1/2 (.5) multipliers should not be used. Try a slight step up.
