Just a question for anyone running 2 x GTX285's on this board.
Since the cards sit right up against each other when using pcie slots 1 & 2, how hot is the top card running under load (Crysis etc)?
Secondly, from what I've read it seems pcie slots 1 & 3 cant be used together both running at 16x, is this true?
Secondly, if you had the choice of running 2 x GTX285's given the lack of space between the cards, or 1 x GTX295, what would you do? Anyone got any comparison benches of 2 x 285's vs 1 x 295?
Hi there

The difference between those two cards are always 2-10 degrees, depends on situation. In Crysis upper card is running 86 and lower 82. fan = AUTO
In furmark extreme burning mode 1920:1200 + 16xAA upper card 92 lower 90 degrees.
But you need good air-flow.... here is mine:

That's correct. Only 16x16x1 or 16x8x8 can be used.

I had the choice and i went with two 285's since it brings the most performance to todays gaming. Some might not like it but that's my personal opinion. If the price is not a problem, go for it. It brings about 20% more performance compared to single 295GTX
2 x 295 GTX's = 4 GPUs = load of microshuttering but good for benchies
Some older games can't take advantage of SLI so they are basically running on a single 275 GTX.
Quick question, i know it goes 16-8-8, But if you oonly use, 1st and 3rd slot, does it become 16x-x-16x, should work? its not using more than 32 lanes..its more if the board itself allows 16x to be set at 3rd slot..
The PCI-E combinations are:
x16 x16 x1
x16 x8 x8
PCI-E Slot #2 and #3 can only operate in 3 modes as stated on page p3.27 in the manual
Auto, x8 x8, x16 x1
are you sure ? I benched 9800GT SLI and get pretty decent numbers with the cards in slot 1 and slot 3... maybe the PCI-E isn't limited by these cards, but nevertheless scores were good, will comapre with the cards in slot 1 and 2 and then 1 and 3 again
Well with high end card you'll for sure notice some kind of difference. A few weeks before i bought mi rig.... ive read somewhere on the internet a topic where a guy put 280GTX in 1st and 3rd slot and some games were shuttering .... and his performance vantage score was about 1000 points lower compared with cards in blue slots...
Just found a sweet spot for my 4Ghz D0:
Prime95 small FFT stable: 60 58 57 58

Will try to run some tests with 285's and 9800GT's in SLI this weekend on the different slots and compare data
2 Cryptik: No microshuttering at all. I'm mostly playing FC2, Warhead, WoW, Grid... I upgraded from a single 280 GTX so i know what I'm talking about. Everything is smooth.
And to the sound card....2 min work with a screwdriver:

2 Leeghoofd: That would be great m8. Looking forward to your tests!!!
In FC2 when you look in certain directions in the desert (trees I think it's been a while), you can see a slight perceived frame rate degradation. In CoD5 though it's much worse. At the edges of many maps you clearly see things going wrong with the frame rate in SLI. Also, GoW maps with rain are completely corrupted with flickering. However, overall two way SLI is working very well and trouble free on X58. It's well worth if you demand better performance in higher resolutions.
Ok so it seems some games do in certain situations.
Do you guys have any idea if a single GTX295 has less micro-stuttering issues than 2 x 285's, or is any SLi setup going to do it regardless?
You have to take into account that it's only in specific places and very minimal with the latest drivers. The only relatively new games that I think are worse off with dual SLI in higher resolutions are Brothers in Arms - Hell's Highway (stutter) and GoW (rendering corruption). All the other newer FPS & RTS games I've played are better in dual SLI compared to a single card @ 1920 x 1200 with 4-16AA.
I have almost all the hot titles from the past two years. So, if you have questions about a specific game let me know. I might be able to help.
As for two GPUs on a single card or two single cards in SLI, I personally prefer the latter. Considering past products, single cards with dual GPUs have run into serious frame rate problems. Notorious examples are the 7950 GX2 and the 9800 GX2.
Ok, thanks again. I guess in most games a single 285 will give playable frame rates at 1920 x 1200 so I could always disable one if I had to.
Leeghoofd - looking forward to those results from your testing.

Thank you,

P.S. I also found Daniel_K sound blaster MB drivers if you want to post a link, let me know
What new bios?
Daniel_K sound blaster MB drivers, do these even work anymore? Last i heard creative gave that poor fellow a work over for trying to help.
Still waiting on the bios release to fix the boot logo to be disabled and the J-micron disabled by default. Nothing major but annoying enough to have to turn them off after a failed boot.
Really i didn't know! lol jk yah i know but the utilities are the same and the creator of the the thread knew how to make an original post, the daniel-K drivers work and i can prove it, I have working windows 7 and dolby and everything, msg me for them, im too tired too look them up atm...
BTW asus has 1504 bios, legit and official :) no external
