with the P5B deluxe obviously
I want to run vista aero in the future and I am doing some television recording what are your reccomendations for memory and cpu fans, i have justin_c giving me some ides too I just want to put together a nice system and get into some overclocking,
ive never done overclocking before but i want to start on a nice setup.

I like the Ballistix 2x1gb kit- ..... $309 at newegg- you could spend less and be happy, but I don't skimp on memory or PSU's.
HSF- I like the Zalman 9500 or 9700 CNPS. Scythe Ninja is popular as well, but it's HUGE.
HDD- 300+gb SATAII drive... whatever size you can afford.
believe me on the PSU's...... for the money, Enermax and OCZ hold some of the best voltages under load. I've tried many PSU's running OCCT. Look at the voltage graphs after running the test. Every Antec I tried was all over the place- and had a significant drop in the voltage lines. My Enermax was the most solid and the OCZ is really good as well. For $89 the Eneermax I linked is really a great value and an even better PSU. The only reason I didn't get it for this present rig, is that it's not sleeved and I'm too lazy to sleeve it on my own although I did it with my last one. The OCZ is already sleeved.
Here's my current rig from newegg... I put it on a saved wish list and made it public. I dumped the HSF's for WC'ing..... everything else is the same. I don't have the hdd on there, but I have a Seagate 300gb SATAII and another Seagate 320gb SATAII. Seagate's have been reliable for me
and I usually stick with what I've had good luck with in the past.
This rig takes my E6400 to 3.5Ghz @ 1.47v in bios- 1.44v in CPU-Z and ASUS PC Probe- it's dual Prime 95 stable.

I recommend the ballistix kit that I have in my sig for sure. i used memtest86 up to 1080 mhz and it was perfectly stable at good timings on my p5b. once i realized i couldn't get my fsb any higher than 505 though i stopped testing.

Thanx for the tips. While the mobo and CPU could benchmark and load windows fine at 3.6ghz, they were running hot , peaking > 70.
ATM 3.37 ghz seems to be the highest Orthos Stable clock I can reach without getting more cooling.
The mobo and cpu seem capable of handling much more so i guess ill need a water cool upgrade to truly test how much they can handle but im quite happy with how they have performed.
Im about to update the BIOS now to 0804.
Ive been reading some of the stickies but I dont feel comfortable enough yet tweaking my mem timings since these OCZ timing seem relatively odd.
Also it seems clear, cooling should be my next step.

Just put stock timings in and youll be ready to go to 500Mhz, youll never reach that with your cpu on 9 multi though. So either you put your multi down which will stress your NB, or you put your memory on an upward divider.

Right now my cpu is running at 2.8 (400x7) and is completely stable with dual orthos runnin for 12 hours. Once i start pushing my fsb higher than 400 though my mem seems to get overclocked past 800 mhz and creates instabilities. I tried lowering the speed through the dram frequency option in the bios but it wont let me go below 800mhz at 400 fsb. How do i set up mem dividers so i can push my fsb higher?
The most forgiving divider you can do is 1:1, which at 400 mhz is the spec for your RAM.
What you want to do is thoroughly test the RAM using memtest at a low fsb and higher divider until you get a feel for its limitations. Only then start to overclock, because you will know when the RAM is holding you back and when it is something else.
You may want to increase the RAM voltage a couple notches over spec to what you feel comfortable with before you begin. Be forewarned that some RAM gives good results using voltage, but some just sucks no matter what you try.
Or you could ebay the 6400 ram you have and buy the kit I got off newegg.com for 309$ :)
Has anyone found a solution to this problem? I have the same one! I get the STOP: 0x0000007b error when I try to install Windows XP Pro SP2 with all the latest updates. I do not understand as my Windows Pro installation DVD will install successfully using my older PC (it is a burnt copy). Do you think the Core 2 Duo processors or Asus mobos detect "illegal" copies of the disk and this is why? Something is fishy here... :para:Quote:

I have heard about this problem and have the same setup myself: SATA HDD and two IDE DVD/RW drives. However, my Win XP home installed perfectly on the first try, no errors. It is strange that not everyone has this problem.

I don't have BSOD problems (during install either), I don't have the 1x Link problem, no problems whatsoever after a week now.....other than the Vcore droop, which isn't much of a problem. This is a great and stable mobo.

Hi, I just got a SATA hard drive(Maxtor Diamondmax 9) and I am unsure of how to install windows onto it. I have it connected to the red Sata port#1 and I just want to install windows on it:). Can anyone walk me through it? Are there any floppy drivers that i have to install first?
U only need the floopy drivers if u enable ahci in the bios.Quote:

Anyway, keep the multiplier at 10x. And, stick with bios 0804, till asus releases it officially.

my systems consists of a p5b-d wifi, 2gb of crucial ballistix ram, an E6400, and a nec dvd burner along with the maxtor hard drive. i just have one hard drive installed in it and it is the maxtor which i am trying to load windows onto. i have gotten to the screen where it finishes loading drivers and then it goes to "setup is loading windows" then it just stops and doesn't go further. Is there an F6 driver i should load for installing a single sata drive?
EDIT: Nevermind, I got it to work:).
