Can you select the number of cores running in bios perhaps?
If you are talking about the app_info.xml. It needs to be in the folder boinc\data\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org. You will also need to restart boinc.
You could open Boinc manager, select tasks tab and manually suspend the CPU tasks but why would you want to do that? If you're trying to run multiple GPU tasks and need the CPU cores to run the them open boinc manager>tools>computer preferences>processor usage tab. Where it says On multiprocessor systems use at most xx% of the processors select what percent of processors to use. Because the GPU app uses 1 CPU core by default you have to, on a quad with HT, select 62.5% for that setting. That leaves 4 cores for the GPU and 4 for the CPU. (62.5% would normally make it a 5 and 3 core split but because the GPU app uses 1 core by default that makes the split 4 and 4. Adjust accordingly by the amount of GPU tasks you're trying to run and/or if you have a different CPU.
If I wanted to stay under $100
I'd probably go for this one:

or this one:

Ran into having no new tasks for the GPU using the app_info tweak. Says I have completed my daily quota of 1016 tasks. I removed the app_info.xml and restarted boinc. I started downloading tasks for both CPU and GPU... weird.
to have more than one GPU task running, you just need to [have more than one GPU :p:] create or edit cc_config.xml and in the <options> section put <use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
3 rigs running. 2 at 24/7 throwing down 41k today!
well i was wondering my my RAC seemd to jump up so fast and I guess i know why. I checked a few of my machines today and below is what I found:
One of my rigs with a 4.2GHZ Core i5 650 and OCed GTX 275 takes just under 6 minutes to complete a GPU WU with 3 CPU wu's running at the same time.
The only other machine I can check (my main rig in my sig) is doing the following. Because my 480's are in SLI they are not being used ATM (which is fine B/C the power they would use would be simply to much) however my GTX 560 (at stock) that i use for Physx is running at about 4 and half minutes per WU with an additional 11 CPU WU's running on my system. I will check my machines at work tomorrow but there should be a GTX 460, 7870, 7570 and maybe some laptop GPU's running it.
It's hard because im sitting here looking at a pile of un used computer and a GPU stack about 2 feet high (not joking) that I can't use all at the same time due to power and heat requirements. If I could I might just be able to give StoneAgeMan a run for his money. on the flip side of that once the power bill came I would be instantly kicked out of my house....
one thing I noticed however with my main rig is that when my GTX 560 is running it brings all of my GTX 480's up to full speed which is no doubt chewing the power despite the fact they are all at 0% usage. I also noticed that when a WU runs my GTX 480's GPU RAM usage goes up to like 750MB while my GTX 560 only goes to 79MB.... pretty strange...
anyways good to see that WCG GPU finally happened!
What I would love to see however would be some advanced tasking features for Boinc. for example my HTPC has a GTX 460 in it that I would love to use overnight when I am not watching TV, however my 2600K CPU in the unit I would love to run WCG all day (it makes not diff when watching movies if it's running or not). i have another machine also with a GTX 460 that I would like to do the same with.
maybe next boinc release or something like that.
BOINC by default is set to not use the GPU when the PC is in use, so that may already do what you are wanting. I left my PC set that way as the display lag with BOINC using the card, while not terrible, was still annoying, plus it made videos and such get all herky-jerky. I figure I use my PC primarily in the evenings from 6PM - 12 PM usually (tonight is weird, it is 2:30 AM and I'm still on the PC like a moron lol), so that still leaves 18 hours it is using the card.
I ended up suspending all tasks in BOINC manager and that resulted in only the GPU WU running.
I found that throughout the WU, 1 CPU thread would be fully used (which is 12% usage in task manager). So with my Nvidia card, it seems the 1 CPU thread allocated to the GPU WU will be at 100% load all the way through the WU as I suspected.
If you want to run GPU only you can change that in the Device Manager on the the WCG site.
There is an option in every profile to allow CPU work or not. (Allow research to run on my CPU? Yes/No)
I have that set to No, and I don't get any CPU tasks send to this rig.
I want to run WU's on my CPU, I just wanted to temporarily stop all CPU WU's to see how much my CPU is used during a GPU WU. You can't just pause CPU work, because the GPU WU's will also stop. However, I found that you can pause all CPU WU's individually so only the GPU WU will run. It looks like that with Nvidia cards 1 CPU thread will be used 100% during the entire WU which is not the case with AMD GPU's apparently.
On my A6 3650 with Radeon 6530D, the CPU core is at 94%-100% during the entire processing of the HCC GPU WU. Task Manager showed little change in CPU utilization.
On my ATI 5850 the CPU doesn't go higher than 1-3% while the GPU is at 93%. Only at the start end end of the WU will one core be loaded 100%.
For reference, my dekstop is getting around 100.000 WCG points per day with GTX670 OC (1137Mhz with boost) and 3.8Ghz W3570. Up from about 40.000 WCG.
What are similar machines with AMD cards doing?
That 100.000 WCG points, is that with both GPU and CPU work or GPU only? My ATI 5850 with only GPU work did 100k yesterday and the first half of today is already at 50k. The days before I have been playing with double work on the CPU and some CPU work.

If I'm not touching the PC at all then my system (2600k @ 4.5GHz, Radeon 7950) gets nearly 200K in a day. When I use it for a chunk of the day then it drops down to 120k.
To put into perspective, before the GPU kicked in that rig was doing 40k-50k a day.
Makes me want to shoehorn a GPU into Sammy
