Solving the AN7 issue

Well I have tested a few different kinds of ram on the AN7, and the my final conclusion is the CH5 modules are the best for the AN7. The system is extremely snappier with the CH5's then with the BH5's. I know hard to believe right but like I said, Abit tweaked this board with CH5 sticks not BH5. This is only my opinion and I think I'm right on with this one.


I tested 4 sticks of KHX 3500 with "Kingston 4.5" on the chips. It's older ram and pretty sure it's BH5. Were the worst.

Tested 2 sticks of Buffalo 3200 BH5. 3rd best but still not great.

Tested 2 sticks of A-Data Hynix PC4000. This worked 2nd best.

I have 2 sticks of old school TwinMOS BH5's but they are in my P4P800 rig. I don't expect better results with it anyway.

The surprise were the KHX 3500 CH5 modules. I basically wrote them off when they didn't play well in my P4P800. I was using BH5's in the NF7-s then. The whole system is so much more responsive and fluid. So if you have decent CH5 sticks and you get the AN7, you'll be happy.

Just posting to add another AN7 to the POS pile. Lucky if I can get thorugh a 3d mark run at 215. Playing with the nb voltage and I feel like it does nothing. Maybe the bios really is holding the board back, or of course the ghetto style. Post anything that helps you guys. WHat do you do with enhanci PCI and akso cpu disconnect function?

Oh my my... didn't notice this thread till one of my friend told me about this... Just gotten mine today. And the board has the cut traces as well. Aparently this motherboard should have arived at Malaysia (this is where i'm from) last week. Well I guess it was not a miss shippment. Those ABIT workers have to do some last minute correction on this board... hence this is the answer to that cut trace on the board. Hope my luck is not as bad as others. Will post my results in like 7 hrs later. Till then, just some minor note, ill be using the Mushkin PC3500 High Performance 2x256 CH5 on this motherboard. Wish me luck guys.

My AN7 loves my BH-5's. Im not having any probs besides I cant get past 225 FSB, hopefully a new BIOS will fix that.

twiggy, you on bios 13, or whatever the stock one is?

with bios 13 im at 225 and doing fine, i have been able to boot at 227, and 230 is almost booting now. with more time and burn in i think it will.

Yeah Im on BIOS 13. Im in the same boat as you, I can get upto 230 but havent had any luck getting it stable.

My temp read out is always 0.0c no matter how much voltage or overclock I thro at it. :(

OK , but do you have CH5 to compare it to?

You will notice a difference.

i have some CH5
it has been proven to work at 230 adn 235, want me to try it in my an7 and see if i can make 230 work?

the ch5 would run 230 @ 2.85vdimm 2-2-3-11

im gunna try lax timings wiht my bh5 now., i can get 227 with 2-2-2-11, so i think with 2-3-3-11 i can do 230.. thinking it might be my ram as my friend adn i both have nearly the same hardware and hes having ram issues at these speeds.

so, im gunna relax bh5 times see if i cant get 235 up, then ill swap the ch5 in and test her out.

wow.. my AN7 just had a total fit..

tried for 230 with more lax bh5 times, and it freaked out on me and i ended up having to reset cmos twice pull battery and load fail safe defaults to get back to windows!!!

soooooo.. yeah.. gunna go unplug my psu and let it sit for a minute then try to get back to 225 like i was before.

any idea why it would do soemthing like this?

i tried 230, after running 225 all night and day stable, 230 woudlnt go and now i cant even post at 200... i have to leave my cpu at stock otherwise it wont make it through post.

i get a C3 error, somethign about decompressing the bios into ram.....

the board might be toast. any ideas?

Yes I doubt you blew anything. More of bios corruption issue I would say.

i re flashed the bios and same thing.

i can go at 166fsb fine, but 200 is fubar.

may try to go to stock bios, test it then go back to 13..... any more ideas? :(

I guess it's possible these rushed boards could blow something since they had to be modified by hand. I forgot abou the hand soldered resistors.

yeah its very apparent my board is dieing.

it wont run 166fsb anymore.im gunna pull the board tomorow most likely and go back to my epox 8rda+. then when the new revision of this is out in a few weeks ill RMA.

If my board doesn't get fixed in the next bios update, I'm RMA'ing also.

mine was great! it was blazing fast at 225fsb, but then it just DIED... idunno.. im gunna wait wand RMA when they arent so ghetto.

Have u disabled bios and video shadowing in bios?? I think its sommet like that. Just an idea cos when you reset bios the default setting for those are enabled.

Just a thought maybe u can check if u havnt already

Evil_Spork - do a full reset. pull the power cord, press the power switch a couple of times to dischard any charged caps and then pull the battery out. leave it out for a minimum of 30mins. 24hours could be better.

this has got me out of many very weird bios situations including vanishing fsb and disappearing features. try it if you haven't already.
