You can argue any point you want, but g92 and the rv670 were revolutionary for the general market because until then it was unheard of to have even higher than high end performance at less than half the price. You said it yourself, ati and nvidia are here to make money, and the performance section is a far larger market than the high end ever will be.
As for the 9800gtx, I disagree with the naming scheme, but it is by far the cheapest "high end" ever released, but it should have been called the 8900gts or something along those lines instead. That's poor naming on nvidia's front, all in all, its a great ocer, the only reason why I don't like it is that the 8800gts g92 offers everything the 9800gtx does to the casual ocers (in other words, the 4 phase psu etc won't make a difference unless you are shooting for a record)
This might be xtreme systems, but you still have to think of things from a logical point.

GT200 could have 8 ROP partitions connected with 64-bit each making up the 512-bit memory interface and up to 10 clusters of 24 SPs = 240 stream processors
the 9900gtx will be a dual card like the 9800gx2?
That looks like a 8800GTX design with a couple changes.

heatsink looking exactly like expected; 8800 gts cooler, bit longer

personally i would prefer a cooler like the 9800GTX than this cooler 8800GTS style
