Hi everyone. I'm new. Really like this forum a lot. After taking 3 years off from OC'ing, I'm back with the C2D E6400 and the Asus commando. Very pleased with products so far. Time to get to the point... after reading about lapping and it's advantages, I could not resist the temptation, and decided to see what I could end up with. I did some research, mostly here, and came up with a procedure that I would follow. I bought 320 grit, and 600. Anything above 600 is just for appearance, IMO. In all honesty, I was able to achieve 11 degrees Celcius cooler after it was lapped. I was stunned. I cannot believe the gain I was able to achieve with 35 minutes work. I currently have the C2D E6400 AT 3.4 on air. Idle it runs at 30 degrees celcius, under PRIME 95 8 hour torture test it peaked at 58degrees celcius. I am extremely happy, and I am very grateful for this post in particular, as it was this post that turned me on to lapping. Sorry no pics, but a ray of positive hope for those who cannot make up their mind as to wether or not lapping is beneficial.

3.4 on air @ 30 idle? where do you live? the arctic?
EDIT: hold on is that an asus probe temp? try using core temp to get a reading and let me know what the real temp is.......
i lapped...no pics...only went to 1200 grit and polished with cerium oxide...didnt go flat right to the edges on two sides/dips at corners ...but with as5 got 3-4c reduction. 47c ctemp from 51c @1.5v
nb lap + as5 helped with my nb cooler too...doesnt even feel warm anymore.
looking back at my old 3500 ihs - its flat as a tack....why do intel have such crappy ihs's :)?

Could someone post some tips? Maybe there was a thread about lapping and tips? I would like to try this, but I dont want to kill my e6300. One thing I specifically would like to know is what to use to take off the thermal paste, and how long to let dry after cleaning with rubbing alcohol.
I read the thread by FCG on The Tech Repository, but it seems to be down now.
For C2D is ok since it has no caps at the substrate, but a big no no for pre c2d or latest QX/quad like the pic below.Quote:

So If understood corectlly .. after lapping I have to clean booth sides of cpu with 100% alcool?
Been a little busy with a job.. lots of clients, weird issues and so forth...
So i will lap in next weekend... cause I still have temp problem... 42-43 under no load. I had an opportunity to check out this issue with Intel CPUs on several new machines I put together lately.. and u were correct, 90% of them are surfaced flawed... u can simple check without any instruments.. put a coller on, and then take it off, if imprint of the default termal paste is not perfect square shaped on top of CPU, u will have temp issues depending of size of imprint missing, in case of recent computer i did, it was 50% missing so , beacuse I couldn't lap it... i filled it with termal paste, to at least do some dmg control.
I will be contactin Intel manufactoring diretly, and also over importer company my firm is working with.. and tell u what they replied.. I am mainly interested if they would allow authorised personnel to do little laping in case of surface not being flat and causing temp issues.
Umm, after I lapped my CPU, my temps actually went up. Could that be from using too much AS5? not lapping enough? Im going to check the heatsink in a bit.
Tortel it may be becasue it was an uneven lap, or to much AS5 , P.S. try remounting heatsink/water block
Well, here is a pic of the CPU/Heatsink, and the AS5 on it. It seems to be even and level, but may be a bit too much. I dabbed some off the heatsink after that pic, but the temps are the same. And btw, yes I do use the stock heatsink, it works fine for me and im too cheap to get something else.
