What so what you really running your X2-4400 at just the 2.4Ghz in your sig or the 2.7Ghz you mentioned? What type of cooling you running? What voltage? I was just able to squeeze 2.7Ghz out of mine runs on the very high end in benches of 48C but otherwise max I've been able to get it was 46 for a split second doing 3D Renderings. Its stable too but ya im sitting in the same boat as you, I can get 2.8ghz to run, in windows and all but throw a bench at it, and say hello to BSOD (god been a long time since I seen that screen).

I'm just glad I got 2.7 since thats what I really wanted at least.

As far as the X2 - I run it at 2.4ghz as my base setup. I just installed the Zalman 9500 - which is amazing. Temps dropped 10-15 degrees. I am sure I could go morefor my base. I have to bump the volts up to 1.3 to get that stable, but it is very easy to hit. Temps are low 30's - sometimes idles at 29. Load is mid 40's. It hits low 50's if I give it 1.55 volts to run 2700 or 2800. Definitly not a temp issue. It is just one core that hurts me. I cannot run prime95 with the 2700 tests but 3d05 works most of the time. I am sure it is a memory or other issue I am just not savvy enough to figure out. some night I will muck with it a little. I am sure if I lower the memory timings and pump up the volts I can get a bench at 2800.

Might try 2700 with the 5.12's tonight to try and hit 10250.

Well for some odd reason yesterday my standard 630/720 clock failed... It would lock up the system every time I tried it.

I havn't figured out why might be the voltage finally getting to it but its stable @ my previous clocks 615.6/720. So basically I lowered my voltage/clock thats all. Sucks but no clue why it would lock up the system other then it was an issue running at that speed which I hadn't seen in hours of gaming. Not complaining about it at all still got a stealler clock :)

From what I can see you guys are cranking these voltages up, when you reach ceilings and I don't think they can really handle them. I've had zero issues under 1.2 volts.

I have a x1800xl Sapphire OEM under Watercooling Runs 40c all the time.

I can't get past 1.20 or so volts on the Core. It locks the screen up in 3dmark 2005 instantly.

Anyone else know what the problem is?

Yes, it's the reason these chips became XL's and not XT's. I'm telling you, these things don't need ridiculous voltage to clock them up.

Yeh OC for both. I've heard the ATI is better for memory and voltage or something. I don't know. I'm not going to screw around much more until something final comes out, and I can mod the bios and be done with it. This thing runs flawless at these settings.

Thats what I thought because the memory is running so high for that voltage. Just so you know also your only running 1.15V on the GPU ;)

Yeh but who knows what the overclocker tool is doing. There are reports of it changing timings, producing higher overclocks. I'll wait for something final. Problem is, I don't think my core will handle XT voltages. At this point I'll be happy with 600/700-750. It's better than stock. Hopefully an editor will be released soon. All the current flashing tools, work just fine. I saved off my bios already.

Hes using OC to get those clocks. That program loosens the timings on the ram considerably to hit those speeds.

Example I could hit 820Mhz with just 1.95V. Used ATI tool same voltage with 650 (found out that was unstable at that voltage but anyways) i got a 400 point increase in 05.

Did not notice the OC tool was being used. That makes more sense.

Small update for those wanting to see someone get stupid and flash their XL with an XT bios. I did it tonight. I posted the results here:

Ouch glad you got it back working.... As for loosened timings ya the PE bios might work if you can get the core that high expecially with that voltage that its pumping (what 1.45V some reports?). But having the memory with loosened timings at that speed has you loose preformance instead of gaining it.

Also gets me wondering if the XT bios's are really even good for the XL if it can run those speeds. Since they have a 2D and 3D clock and possibley a voltage change between the 2 settings. The XL doesn't that I can tell its just 1 voltage/clock.


Oh tried a game I havn't played in a little while Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. Man I remember running at around 40-100 FPS on a 1280x1024 screen and i think with everything turned on. My new monitor rulez lol, run at 1920x1200 and the lowest I've seen it get is mid 70's with averages in the 100's. Damn love this card. This is with the card at 600/700 (1.175/2.154/2.004V) With 615/720 I was mid to upper 80's but unstable. Guess my core was causing issues at that voltage, but did play for 3 hours (1 hour too long lol forgot the time) without an issue. But what ever ti was it picked up the error pretty quickly and crashed the game (under 2min in 3D mode). Hmm might be my new clock tester, going to have to try ghost recon at these settings since that seemed to be picky also for some wierd reason, you know that old game lol pick about clocks and not Quake 4, FEAR, or AoE III.

I love pulling out old games - always cool to play them at settings you could not when they were released.

I mucked around with the memory last night. There is definitly a coorelation between the core voltage and the memory. Once I get in the 700's there is a direct relation to adding .025 memory bumps to bump every 10 notches in memory. Although, once I hit 730, with the core at base, it goes crazy. bumping up the core a notch allows me to move beyond 730. I figured it was time to get methodical about this - I always end up going right for the big clocks and never have tried to figure out the true relation to core/memory/voltage.

In the end - I do love this XL card. Even if I ran it at 600/600 it still smokes my old GT and 3D05's better than the GTX and those clocks are easy with minor volts. Fun stuff....

Ya its amazing what you can do with it... I think im going to try sticking around my 600/700 speed and try dropping the voltages til it becomes unstable. I really do think that 1.2V is truely the limit of the core over the long haul.

I'd really like to know what the memories true voltage is though. I mean in that techspec I posted a last week or the week before had a little information but gave no solid answer. There was the 1.8V typical with +/- .1V so that brings it to 1.9V on the top side where the memory starts at, yet its rated for faster. Then I saw the 2.5V as max. So confusing. But 2.154V seems to be the typical spot people raise voltage too, with 2.2-2.25 seems to be wehre people stop.

Deathman, try your 600 core at 1.15 or 1.175 like I had it. See what happens. I had no issues at those voltages until I went above them. I think 600 / 600 maybe 700 at the lowest voltage possible is going to be the safe bet with these cards.

Mine works so far with 1.175 @ 600 Core, its what I was running last night.

Memory is working dandy so far @ 700. And since memory either works or doesn't its easy to tell if its being stressed too far, and since my memory is 1.4ns its good for 700Mhz. Just got to find the sweet spot on the voltage for it, or try giving her more :)

What voltage are you reaching 700 on the mem with? I'm going to try it during lunch. Are you using ATI Tool for everything? OC Tool defintely laxes timings, as ATItool would crash out above 600 mem on 1.9v

I used ATITool for everything as soon as beta 9 came out.
2.154V Mem with 2.004V I/O Temps don't seem to increase from them running that warm but they do have there own sinks and a 120mm fan is blowing across them.

I can get up to 710Mhz without it artifacting in most games at that voltage. 2.184V I can get up to 720Mhz and 2.2V I can hit 730Mhz. Im sure the memory works at these fine, just that it was crashing but I did drop my core speed and voltage down so that mgiht help a little more on them going higher. I'll find out when I get home tonight to play with them a little more.

I'm sorry I'm confused on the 2.004 I/O. What uses that voltage?

Its the second memory voltage. It helps with stability. Just keep it at or lower then what ever you set your memory voltage too. I know when I run high memory I can't drop it lower then where it is otherwise it locks up, but raising it doesn't seem to help either.

I did stress the volts last night to see what would happen (guess while I was being an idiot with the bios, I also pushed the volts). The core at 1.4 was able to do 725. I had the memory at 2.75 and 775 - but that seemed to have problems. I did push it to 2.88 and that helped but system froze halfway through 3d05. I am pretty sure these chips can take a lot of volts with proper cooling - although I don't recommend it.

I like the idea of picking 600/700 and dropping volts till it is stable. Wish there was a quicker way of testing high level stability (as you mention - with Memory you know right away - especially if you incrementally push it. You see artifacts all over the place and can then push it down.)

I hit 600@1.15v / 650@2.01v over lunch. 3dmark05 ran 3 times without a hitch. I think I like my core the way it is, but I want 700 on the mem :) Will try higher at 2.01 after work. I'm sticking with my original plan of 600/700 safe bet.

Because you are pushing the card past it's specs. and now it looks like you ruined the RAM.

Dazog - these XL cards ar strange, I got my card for some hours and then it stop working correctly, now its at RMA, so try diferent drivers, setings on the card! If not working - RMA ir :(

Tried HL2, and Battlfield 2 both get white sparkles unless i lower core to like 400mhz

So I know its the card.

Put the voltage on the core to 1.1V. I got some wierd effects on the card at stock in AoEIII but I put the voltage there it worked fine.. All other games I tried worked fine at stock though.

BTW that white sparkle is more core related then ram. Ram will have bigger glitches, or one I've seen is big white blobs on the screen (thats pretty hard to miss).

Think there was a few that RMA'ed there cards.... Must of just been a bad batch type thing. Hopfully you get a nice new card though soon.

Decided to try a couple new bios files - I tried 3 in all. 1 XT Regular bios, 1 XT PE bios, and 1 XT 256mb bios. All had the same results I had before. I was able to boot into windows with no problem - but windows did not recognize the card at all. It used the VGA driver. ATItool showed 600/700 as the clocks - could not view volts due to its inability to recognize the card. ATI driver reinstall did nothing.

Apart from being stupid and trying my luck as 2nd and 3rd time, I can at least for my sapphire X1800 XL card confirm that an XT bios will do no good. Kind of like watching a horror film waiting in anticipation of whether the thing would boot again...and pretty stupid...

I bet problem is that on XT you can set 2D and 3D clocks, and on XL we cant, maybe because of that it doesnt want to install driver correctly. But from what i see .. on XL and on XT its not really problem to set +125Mhz on GPU from default clocks, but not really more. Too bad watercooling didnt improve overclock, only temp.

Do you have a X1800 XT 256 MB bios ? i realy would like to try it. It seems my card can only handle 1.125v i think that i i flash the XT the card will to 1.3 or will not start @ all. I hope the first thing. Otherwise i will buy a R580 as soon as it's availble.

Some XL card are good. But i think the XL's are boards that could not do XT speed or voltages. In a few months we will see XL boards with the same A15 chips as the XT. And will be able to clock same speeds / voltages. But for now some of those A14 cores will be realy ******* And you will have bad resulds with them :)

I can clock 560-612 @ stock and that are the speeds i'm running. Voltage tweaking is not working probaly. I would like real volt mods. To see if the core is realy the problem.

You guys, it's not coincidence that these things don't work properly at what you are pushing them to. It's the same deal with CPUs that are in the same family. Some become 2800xp's and some become 3200xp's, it just depends on how well the physical characteristics of that particular chip clock. XT cores that can't do XT speeds, become XL's. They all come from the same platters.

They might come from similar silicone but that doesn't mean the processes are different. Thats why XL's have the A14 process and the XT's have the A15's currently.

Right, and A14 was a failed XT metal layer revision.

I would realy love to try the bios. Its my last hope. But i realy think these are the fixed softground cores. Some will do fine other will have problems. And the A15 are the ones that did have the extra layer from the start.

But luckly for me that the R580 is comming in the end of januari. So i'll pick up one of those to replace my bad clocking XL.

Decided to try another bench with the 5.12's and my X2 set to 2700 on a cold boot. Got a good score out of it: 10256. Looks like a pretty good score posted on orb for the X2 4400. It beats a lot of the XT scores posted up there.

I would never play at this clock as I am sure it is unstable in the long run - but fun to hit non-the-less.

Hi all, this is my first post in Xtream Systems and i have been reading this thread
for a long time(very long) and i'm posting my overclock results of this superb card X1800XL. Now i'm waiting for zalman vf-700 to cold down my card. This result in 05(9715) was obtained with 1.250v/2.150. The temp reached 70 at full load with those clocks.http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...5&d=1135064814

my card was working at 630\1330. now i found it easy to rase mem up to 1500 and maybe even higher (2.3V)... but the core... smth wrong with it... now i can't even see it working normally at 600(!!!) mhz... voltages are the following : 1.175\2.3\2.0 In the last benchmark they were 1.225\2.0\1.998. I don't know what to do.. i've already reinstalled WinXP in REPAIR mode, reinstelled the driver (5.13b), AtiTool, AtiTraytools (i hate CCC!!!)... And all it was in vain:( guys, need help! Now i can't set voltage to 1.2 and higher - 2dm05 hangs in the end of the first test!

Well some cards can't handle the high voltage on the gpu to begin with and maybe yours is showing that finally. It took a while for mine to see that anything over 1.2V was causing it to hang in the long term weather it be in benches or in games. And that memory voltage, you should easily get 700Mhz on the memory if not more, mine at 2.2 does 730Mhz but that does seem to be on the higher side though.

the problem is that some time ago i could easily make my card run at 640\1330 in benchmarks and at 625\1330 in all the games. it was absolutely stable! the voltage was 1.2-1.225. And all was just great. Then i found the way to overclock my mem to 730 and more. I was about to set up a new record for myself at 640\1520, but the core now isn't able to work properly.. temperature is ok.

I have one question for those of you guys that use a Zalman VF700, did someone make a compare with the naked ram and with the provided sinks on?

so, i'm one of those guys)) memory chips are not too hot, but i advise you to use them) i spent one week without sinks only because i was too lazy)))

Do you remember how it translates into volts and Mhz?

it was just ok for memory to run at 1400 without sinks (2.184\2.004)

This is a good question - I have no idea. I am doing nothing special in regards to setup. I even had Norton running in the background. I do have memory timing set really tight, but other than that everthing else is set to driver defaults. I can look anything up if you would like.

Not sure what results your comparing to as there are a lot of them in this thread - but keep dreaming. My old 7800GT with the same clocks and a 4400+ would barely touch 8200. To hit 9k or venture "near" 10K you are going to need a LOT more out of both your CPU and your 7800. Good luck.

i'm really impressed with this video card(X1800XL). Today arrived my zalman vf700 and i installed it and went to benchmarks. For my surprise, with 693 on the core with 1.3v and 711 on memo with 2.250v, i finally managed to reach the 10000 3dmarks wall(10028 to be more acurate). Now i'm running for normal use 625/645 with voltages at 1.150/1.935/1.935 that returned with 9190 3dmarks05.

My artifacts are GONE!

5.12 and 5.13 have huge bugs

I hope I am not the only one with the problem, that way ATi will fix it!

I also got artifacts, in 3dmark 05 that is. Is there any differnce in performance with 5.11 vs. 5.12?

Here i increased my 3d marks05 in 300 points from 9700 to 10000. And my 24/7 over,jumped from 9050 to 9200.

Okay, so now I've tested/benched for a day or two and so far I'm pretty pleased with the card (HIS X1800XL). I got the 1.4ns mems. which was good :)
After a few bench rounds and some gaming I changed the stock cooler(damn that thing is loud :slapass: ) for the VS-F7. The idle temp dropped ~7*C compared to the stock one, and load temp dropped atleast ~10-15*C. Here are some temp info, just for fun :p:

50*C @ Idle_____Stock cooling @ 80%____Stock speeds
65*C @ Load____Stock cooling @ 80%____Stock speeds

43*C @ Idle_____VF-S7___________Stock speeds

Well, at the moment my best 05 score is 8626 because when I try to go over 600/600 I get quite alot of artifacts (black dots at the beginning but then it gets worse) + that this is my first DFI rig and my Corsair memory don't work well at all with this mobo :stick: I can't get them to run over 210mhz and the cpu just barley do 2.4Ghz, so if I can run the mem and cpu at my old speeds(2778Mhz and 270Mhz) I had with my previous MSI mobo I'm sure the score would be higher.

So what can I do about the artifacts? I don't think it's a heat problem because from to look at the temps the cars is really cold.. unless the cooler is mounted wrong. Gonna take a look tomorrow just to be sure. I don't have high volts either so... 1,150/1,905/1,889. I've seen alot of people with much higher V, like most of you guys..
When you people bench, is the runs complete artifact free or do you just ignore them and countinue?

Other than this the card is great, abit of a differnce compared to my old 9800pro :P:

Later on I'm going to fit a big cpu copper cooler and a 120mm fan on the card, did that on the 9800pro and it worked really good.

And last... do you now any good bios for DFI with Corsair memory? Or any good tips/threads?

Only thing I can recommend is visiting the dfi-street forums. Someone there is bound to have details on how to get your board going. Could be that you need a different BIOS. Worth a shot posting over there as that is what they focus on.

You should definitly be able to get above 600 core and memory without artifacts at those temps. I don't see them on mine till I get my memory above 755+ - I don't ever see them due to the core (instead the system freezes when the core gets unstable). If you are seeing artifacts, bump your memory voltage up a notch and see if they are still there. You should be able to got to 2.25 easily - although I would not go above that. Being crazy I have benched at 1.4/2.5/2.5 - which was stable for benching - but temps were high.

Others have also posted that changing driver between 5.11/5.12/5.13 fixed artifacts. You can search for those posts if interested.

5.12 and 5.13 have artifacts in BF2 at any speed.

I would use 5.11 until 6.1 come out.

Ok, gonna try some of your tips guys. Tho I've tried all the cats and there's no difference in "artifact factor" lol. But thanks, gonna experiment some more now... :D

600/600 @ 1.175 / 1.9 has worked flawlessly for weeks for me. Anything over that eventually causes issues.

Okay, I bumped up the voltages to around 1,175/2.1/1.889 and I benched at 620/690 with very little artifacts, I got 9162. Tho this is with the stock cooler + 92mm fan and the pc in a open window. And i got the cpu up to 2.7ghz also compared to the previous 2.4...

I ain't gonna bench anymore now until I've fitted a copper cpu cooler + 92mm fan.

That is a great score. I would think you could get your core with good cooling a little higher. I break 10k with 680/750 on my system in benches.

My problem is that core doesn't like volts at all, if i take it from 1.075 to 1.095 it starts artifacting, it needs 1.170-1.175 to get rid of the artifacts but then it would freeze before the end of 3DMark most of the time, the 9704 was done at 1.175 on a lucky run :(

I'm happy. no artifacting in CAT 5.11, but i noticed temps are higher...even to the touch. almost seems that the card is rendering or something with the 5.11 while in 2d...temps only raise 3c from idle to load.

Catalyst 5.12 and all of teh 5.13 variations make artifacts appear, even at stock. These artifacts were less when i install the fatality zalman cooler, but they still occur at regular intervals. these artifacts seem to stem form either the memory controller itself, or one of the ram chips. I really hope a driver fixes the isue, but i am beginning to doubt.

I'm gonna go and pick up another xl and see what happens.

For a 760MHz run, 2.280v is needed to avoid any ram related artifacts here.

Has anyone with a Built by ATI card been able to push the voltage higher? at 1.175 volts, my games will crash randomly with VPU recover kicking in. No artifacts at all! I'm using ATI Tool beta 10. I know that the voltage could be lower than what ATI Tool reports (~12% increase). Is it possible that there is a protection in the BBATI BIOS that says if vCore is +/-10% (for example...voltage fluctuates at just below 10% and a long spike sets it off), halt all processing? setting for higher than 1.175v locks up the screen immediately. I don't seem to get it running at 1.150v...I've hear of one other person with this problem right now. I'm thinking of going with the sapphire BIOS.

There aren't any drivers for the X1000 series card that are FM approved yet. They are still in their early stages.

That might be. The best I got was 10256, but that was with 5.13 if I recall. Not sure about approved drivers, I would just use what gives you the best score.

I have the exact same problem w/ my BBATI X1800, more then 1.15 and vpu recover when i start a 3d apps, on the 5.13's, i can't even break 600 w/ 1.15 :(

it should work, but downclock your GPU before you flash, let me know how the flash goes, because I'm getting a Zalman fan and i want to get more out of this chip :) (and i don't have an extra PCI card in case the flash gets screwed.)

sorry for being a noob here but I have a question. The Overclocker tool ends the overclock when it it turned off... Back when i was overclocking my 9700pro i was told that it's better to keep the GPU and mem at a constant speed rather than going higher and lower depending on application and use. THat does not make much sense since laptop gpu's vary gpu clock rate and voltage ( i think) pretty dramatically based on use. So is it acceptable to keep changing around the voltage and clock rates?

Hmm...no...I don't think it would have any sort of damage to the hardware. As long as it's stable and kept at a low temp...everything should be fine. Even CPUs change voltage and speed dynamically.

I'm going to flash my card now...I'll be back hopefully with good results:cool:

I've attached the BIOS from my sapphire X1800XL. It runs up to 1.35v Vgpu ok, and I run the card at 670/650 for 24/7 use (1.20v Vgpu/2.05v Vdd/1.9v Vddq)
