If I recall correctly, in the reviews I've read with the adapter they stranded at about ~220 fsb. they never upped the Vagp wich really helped getting higher fsb. these dothans need higher Vagp at an earlier stage then "regular" (P4) chips do.

if i go dothan, it will have to prove itself better than venice, turion, and san deigo to do so, i'd get the p4p800 se, simply because its much cheaper. it may be missing some useless frills, but if it does 200fsb, its good enough for any dothan (but this IS xs, and we know it will be oc'd more). i just think that we will hit the chips fsb limit much earlier than the motherboards, and the dothans work VERY well with low fsbs anyway. it would be better to spend the 40 dollar difference on something else, maybe a 120mm to 80mm adapter, 120mm fans, and a fan controller or something similar to make it quieter. or on the video card.

Latest beta BIOS for the P4GD1 is dated April 7th, but I didn't find any notes for the BIOS. It looks like a nice board for the Dothan and it's not much more expensive than the P4P800 SE, just 3% more here in Norway. It got nice features such as Azalia audio and PCI-E. It doesn't support 400 MHz FSB CPU's, but I don't think that it would be a problem for us overclockers and the adaptor can be forced into running 533 MHz FSB.

Are these two processors of the same stepping but just different bus speeds, and how do you tell the difference?

What we need is a bios for the P4p800E, this board has a nice upclock ratio of 500 and 533 with the 800 strap so you could use some TCCD at 250+ very easy for some huge badwidth 2.5-3-3 timings.

You can also flash the bios to the P4C800E as they have the same feature set, get the upclock but the added stability of the 875 chipset.

i made up my mind about buyin a new Pentium Mobile Sys but there are some issues i am still a little concerned about.

What would u guys recommend at the moment?

- go for an AOpen i855
- go for an i865P(E)/i875P Mobo + CT479
- go for an AOpen i915 (i guess noone will recommend that option) :D
- forget about the mobile crap and buy an .... whatever

As far as i can tell from what i have read here neither of these options is the perfect "holy grail" solution.
What do u suggest?

the 875 with adapter, though I have no Idea where to find one... :(

Yeah it's not a bad price, or you could be a cheapscape and opt for a Celeron M, the model 350 and 360 aren't so bad. I picked up a 340 for 40 bucks used and honestly it works great!

But there are some stories roaming about the CT479 some people say the overclockability can be different from one CT479 to another.
In fact i have my doubts cause if u go that CT479 way u are forced to use the boxed cpu-cooler which isnt a perfect shot ;)
On the other hand wouldnt it be better to choose the AOpen i855.
The FeatureSet of an i865PE/i875P is almost identical compared to the i855 except for dualchannel but u dont need the expensive adapter.
Does the P-M benefit from the DualChannel Feature really that much?

^To add to the arguement, w/ P4C800-e deluxe and ct-479, overclocking is extremely limited w/ stock cooler. The stock cooler of the ct-479, altho it is 3x bigger than the one that comes with DFI 855, absolutely sucks. Stock vcore, clock speed and cooler on DFI 855 resulted in ~20C idle/50C load. Stock everything on P4C/ct-479 results in 35C idle/59C load. :( Also, 855 chipset is designed to support P-M's specifically, while ct-479 is an adapter in all senses of the word. While I don't know if it holds true for the supported P4P mobo's, the P4C does not offer multiplier or vcore adjustment through BIOS. I have modded my ct-479, removing the FSB jumpers and wiring the FDD connector off-board, so that hopefully some better cooling can be uses, but even cooling (such as a standard s478 water block) will also have to be ghetto-rigged, as the ct-479 extends over the standard s478 cooling mounting holes. Zip ties or some other methd for securing a cooling block are the only option.

From my testing so far, the CPU seems to overclock about the same on the adapter, with stock vcore, as it did on the 855 at stock. The additional feature sets of the 875 chipset don't seem to add any performance (...and of course, let's not forget the finding's of some, that 3d performance is actually reduced by the adapter). At 18 x133 mhz FSB, 3:4, both platforms produce 34s superpi.

Just some food for thought. :)

I am confidfent I can modify a water block to fit over the ct479 adapter with no problems. The only thing im interested in is multiplier and vcore adjustments so If I do make the mobile chip leap I can posibly see 2.6-3ghz on the chip and posibly a 250+ fsb. Thats the main thing im interested in. But if thats not the case I may as well stick to my p4 3.0C @ 3.6 or upgrade to a pressy as I water cool anyways and my cpu realy does not benefit from the extra cooling to give it a better oc as I suspect I have hit a wall at 3.6ghz.

Well, I'm seeing guys in the Superpi WR thread with adjusted multis. One has a P4P and one has a P4C. I personally have tried adjusting multi through CrystalCPUID, but regardless of what it's set to, overclocking via clockgen seems to produce the same results (leading me to believe software multi adjustment is not "real")....

how high do you think a 1.6ghz 533fsb chip will hit compared to a 1.7ghz 400fsb chip? Which would you pick for everyday? For bench runs (gonna c-clamp a modded prommie to it for benches)?

Finally finished playing with this rig and returned to the owner =)...I miss this silent pc now, I think I am having withdrawal *lol*.

This DFI 852 motherboard has no voltage settings for the chipset, ram, or CPU (well, it does have, except, it only offers the max "stock" CPU voltage so it's useless for OC). This motherboard doesn't support AGP on Windows 2003 server OS as well, so I used WinXP. With Win2k3, you can only run the AGP in 1x speed and detected as "PCI" yay.

lktuio, I just responded to your PM, but for the forum's knowledge, the u-wire mod does work similarly to a normal s479. On DFI 855, u-wire mod produces ~1.6v. On ct-479 u-wire mod produces ~1.52v. We're seeing TAM and NewBeetle setting superpi records at 1.6v+, so there must be other ways of modding, but until they release their secrets, the u-wire mod is somewhat effective on the adapter. :clap:

Not on the P4C800. I think the P4P800se is the only one that allow BIOS vcore adjustment.

I got a 31sec super PI at 2.4gh'z,havent even started tuneing it yet for the customer.but as it stand's that's 1 bad cpu,even let my boy's fx-55 take a swing at it;) he failed.

First test w/ the adapter and P4C800-E => Celeron 1.3GHz @ 2.12GHz (1.24V) => SPi1M 37sec (almost 36 :D). ram @ around 203MHz 2-2-2-5.

Very interested in your results macci. I have the same processor...made it too 2.25GHZ at the same voltage. Wouldn't run faster at any voltage. At 1.55 V (in bios) something died. I almost hope it's the cpu since I was going to buy a 730 anyway...

It is not pin compatible with s478, even though it has 478 pins. IIRC, Intel calls it s479 to differentiate the P-M socket and limit confusion on the issue.

So everything is very stock. I'll vmod an old P4C800 (flashed today w/ latest P4C800-E BIOS) for the celery for higher Vcore and FSB. Its 350 without J. Costs around 85€. I think its a very fun chip :D

That's quite a bang for the buck, it seems :)

If that adaptor would only make it to Denmark.. :/

It seems that Dothan C0 stepping likes even less voltage than old B1 stepping did. This 730 (1.6GHz) chip maxes out at 2.52GHz, no difference between 1.4V and 1.6V.

28 seconds in SuperPI 1M calculation for 2.5GHz (250x10) is pretty fast, if you ask me ;)

The best time I have achived with those speeds was 27.787sec, but the system rebooted when I inserted my USB stick (?)...

Good ol´ P4C800-E DLX never lets me down, and these things can hit reasonable high fsb with 1:1 divider and 2-2-2-5 settings :)

My 760 (2.0GHz) chip can hit 2.65GHz with stock cooling (Asus) and voltage.
Even it can hit higher speeds, the chip is only good for phase or LN2 runs, because it´s high stock multiplier (15x).

Because the multiplier cannot be changed (yet) from bios, and the board can´t run at high fsb´s when booted with under 200FSB, the chip is pretty much unusable :(

When the multiplier support will be added to bios, the chip will probably hit 2.8GHz - 2.9GHz speeds with decent voltages and this copper Dothan heatsink (by Akiba) ;)

2x256mb corsair xms3500 bh5 ram
cascade water cooler with hydor l30 pump and heater core rad.
winfast fx5900 le vid card.

software used
clockgen
i865 tweaker
cpuz
cpumsr for vcore and multiplier in windows
superpi
3dmark01 se

i made some little brackets to mount the cascade into the normal p4 mount not sure how much pressure is on the core but temps are a lot better than the asus cooler which went upto the 60's when i set 1.5vcore with the cascade they never go above 44C at load max oc.

this is the best superpi 1m time.

the max fsb i can get on the cpu is 167 any higher no mater what multi / vcore is used and it resets or locks up i think this is the ct-479 not the cpu.
i tested at ram 1:1 with faster timings but at 5:4 with 2.5-3-2-6 gave me the best time. The ram is held back my the p4p800-vm vdd settings of only 2.65v and i think the board is also maxed at about 2.7 as i tested a ocz ddr booster and at 2.8v the fans started to spin faster and then the board died lucky i had 2.

this is about 300 points below my p4 2.8c running at 3.6ghz with a 6600gt running at 600/1200

if i remember the score on the p4 with the fx5900 was about 15000 in 3d01 so thats a good score with the dothan.

Next think to try is running the p4p800-vm bios on a p4p800 with the ddr booster at 2-2-2-5.

The P-Ms with 533 FSB clock better than the P-Ms with 400 FSB.

P4C800+adapter+Dothan at 2400MHz (12x200) seems to be equal to FX55 @ 2.6GHz (13x200) as far as 3DMark2001 SE goes ;)

This is really frustrating I'm helping pcboarder set up his 1.6ghz 533fsb Dothan, p4c800-e deluxe, ct479 adapter, ddr booster, and 2x 512mb mushkin bh5, and the damn thing just won't work. We've spent close to 20 hours on it, but it simply will not come out of locked mode. It stays stuck at 800mhz, 1.136v. Tried all manners of software unlocking, the multi is just l;ocked, same problem that kingping had. His solution does not work. I need this to work, it's pcboarders only pc.

To compound matters, it is not stable at 800mhz either. The mobo gives a voltage out of spec error and heres the weird part:

it is 100% superpi 1m stable, but cannot even start up any games, reboots if left idle for more than 2 minutes, hardlocks/reboots/BSOD's after about 5min on the internet with it.

Asus blames Intel, Intel blames Asus. Both companies reps suck.

What is going on? I need this to be fixed, and fast because of school.

Try reflashing with /n /pbnc switches?
Had the same problem yesterday when I started w/ the 1.6G Dothan and reflash fixed it.

Got the adapter from our shop. Useing the latest BIOS 1021 (from ftp.asuscom.de). At the moment the BIOS doesn't give any Vcore or multiplier adjustement. Everything is adjustable from windows thou :)

I have reflashed the bios several times with the dothan in and a couple with the regular northwood but it just wont work. as comppro said it is stuck at 800 and i have no clue where its messed up. Asus says its the board and intel says its not the chip. I am going to hope to get a board from the rma dep and be able to get it in b4 i send the old one out b/c of having to write papers. I hope this will fix the probs.
EDIT: I tried volt mods and it still is stuck at the 1.185 volts.

Slightly oT, Macci does that mean that all boards listed on your site work well witht he ct-479?? ANy advantage going p4c800e-d compared to p4p800e-d on the dothan platform?? Any benefit to 875 vs. 865, or is it a wash like it was 2 yrs ago with p4?

Do yo have any links to the p4p800 bios 1021.003 asus are only showing 1021.002 in the beta section and on the ftp server.

This woould help me loads i could use my ddr booster on the p4p800 instead of the p4p800-vm i have been using.

Just in the process of modding a xp-90 hsf to fit with the ct-479 adapter.

:toast: Looks good macci! Is that copper heatsink a custom job?
I was thinking I could take a copper s478 heatsink made for 70mm fans and reduce the height of the fins. The ct-479 clips would work with it.
Soon, I hope to do some more Dothan overcloking myself. After less than stellar results with the Celeron-M 350, I picked up a P-M 730-533fsb and another asus adapter...

I have the p4p800 running with beta bios 1021.003 and a 1.6 400fsb dothan.
the bios shows the cpu as locked multi of 16 and no vcore options.
you can change fsb and when at 133 fsb can choose between ddr266 and ddr333 ddr can go upto 2.8v.

i am getting the same max fsb with the p4p800 as with the p4p800-vm anything over 170fsb and the system locks. memory was at 1:1 so no problems with that and i dropped the multi down to 10 so the cpu was only running at 1.7 ish must be the ct-479 stopping me going over 170 fsb or this dothan just cant handle the high fsb but is ok running at over 2.5ghz no problem with multi of 16. I will try upping the vcore with a u-wire mod see whats that gives me

I have a xp-90 modded to fit the p4 bracket with a ct-479 works very nice.

edit: i changed the jumpers on the ct-479 to 400fsb as the p4p800 didnt detect the 533fsb anyway and i can now go over the 170fsb.
I did the u_wire and the system crashed at 2.6 on teh cpu just like the p4p800-vm i think thats the limit of this 1.6 at 1.55v

it didnt go much over 170 only to 173. i have reached my limit with this vcore
163 fsb multi x16 vcore 1.568 ram at 218 2-2-2-5 turbo enabled 3.3v cpu 2616.

super pi time 28sec.

if i drop the multi down to 15 then the 173 fsb stops me getting higher.

Got the 730 1.6GHz chip up to 3GHz now w/ watercooling and 156W Peltier :)

I mean what is this about "must boot at 200" and 750 and 760 and 770 cpu's can't boot at 200 on air, etc, etc...

for me, it went

buy the stuff, follow directions, call tech support for 9 hours, post in forums for 12 hours, rebuild multiple times, waste $15 of arctic silver, get 4 cuts from the mounting brackets, in the process getting so frustrated you almost crush the core, finally boot into windows, find out that your chip is locked at 800mhz and wont overclock past 960mhz, insert BSOD, random rebooting, and freezes here and there approzimatly every 5 minutes, or whenver you start to load a game (yes, every single time), spend 4 hours voltmodding the dothan and socket for 1.4v, finding out it didnt work, spend another 3 hours volt modding them for 1.56v, finding out that the :banana::banana::banana::banana:ING ADAPTER KEEPS THE VOLTS LOCKED THROTTLED DOWN TOO EVEN AFTER VMOD, take a hammer out of the closet, bring hammer down on little unprotected dothan and and adapter, pop in 3.0C, and post this.

Well, remove the smashing adapter part (I wish that happened but its not mine so I can't) and you have mine and pcboarders experience.

I think the 750, 760 and 770 cpu's have 14x, 15x and 16x multipliers, respectively. 750 might not boot at 2.8Ghz on air (at 200fsb).
I don't know about the "must boot at 200". Maybe to get pat on 865 boards?
I can say that I didn't have any problems with a Celeron-M / ct-479 / p4p800-se setup (although that cpu had only a 13x mult.). Trying 730 cpu this weekend.

Hit a wall at 2.25 Ghz. That was at stock voltage with stock heatsink. Tried more voltage and a more powerful fan but no increase. I actually killed something (adapter or cpu) when I got above 1.6 Vcore. I'll find out what died this weekend. The cpu was an older (week 0414) C-M 350. There are newer J- model 350 and 360s out now. They dont seem to be any more expensive than the older models either.

I just wish asus would decide what options to put into the bios of there boards.
p4p800-vm gives vid and multi options in bios but no fsb and limited memory options.
p4p800 gives good fsb /memory options but multi is locked and no vid options.
if only i could add the vid and multi options to the p4p800 bios it would be perfect.
I found using cpumsr i can change the multi and vcore in windows so i can increase the vcore using a u-wire mod and then decrease the vcore using cpumsr.
still Cant get the fsb higher than 172 no matter what multi i use but as i cant change the multi in bios on the p4p800 i cant try setting it to 200fsb as macci said.

still at 2600 with memory turbo and 2225 timmings 3.3v the system is very quick.

@ Macci do you have a best pic of the vcore mod ? I think i will do it on my p4p800 VM

i am using bits i have spare or that i can get cheap.
if i could of got the p4p800-se as cheap as the p4p800-vm i think i would still get the vm as when i have finshed having some fun it will end up as a htpc so the micro-atx of the p4p800-vm will help.

I am using the 1016 dated 04/03/2005
1016.003 beta is dated 21/02/2005 so i went with the newer 1016 file.

Earlier in this thread, I mentioned that after largely unsatisfactoy results with a Celeron-M, I would have some P-M 730 + p4p800se results to post this weekend. No such luck. After installing the 730 cpu and new adapter, it appears that the mobo is dead. Oh well, at least I'm pretty sure I have two working adapters now... :rolleyes: Major disappointment about this weekend though. :(

Guys, anyone thought of whether a wire mod would be able to force the lowest multi on the boards that don't support multi thru bios?

This would allow a boot at over 200fsb into windows with you just setting the multi with one of the apps available.

Im trying to add the multi selection to the P4c bios but no luck as of yet...i even begged Asus to help us all out.

I would like to know how does a 2.5-2.6Ghz Dothan feels like under Windows. Is it faster or more responsive then a 4+Ghz P4? Is it the lack of HT tolerable? In other words, would you use the Dothan in a 24/7 typical system not designed just for gaming an benching but also for music, DVDs, CAD, rendering, etc?

rendering = p4! nothing else is as good as a p4 in rendering. for musik, dvd, cad and other single-threaded programms the dothan should be faster than a p4/amd 64

Like playing with different SpeedStep modes? Have you tried if the multiplier adj. actually works w/ P4P800-VM bios (it didn't work w/ Celeron but then again that doesn't support speedstep either..=))?
Not sure if a wire mod is even possible for this purpose:

I can confirm the multiplier in p4p800-vm bios worked with a 1.6 400fsb dothan.

I have since 3 Days a Asus P4P800-SE (1009Bios) and an new Pentium M 2,0.
The only thing that i don´t have at the moment is dual channel, i wait for my second 512MB Twinmos Twister pro Ram.

This is my time in super pi 1mb (anticheatmod) with single channel.

I have only the Asus CT479 cooler and a 80x80x25mm , but i look to mount a Zalman CNPS700CU-B cooler on the ct479.
At the moment i am testing other things for my forums , in a few days i try to find it out.

My dothan 715 setup is incoming. Eta 1-2weeks (no clue how fast the ebay sellers and atacom will ship.) Since the only thing I use my comp for (besides surfing and other low utilization apps) is gaming, I figured despite the bad results in other areas, I ought to give the ct-479 + dothan a try. Total spent will be ~ $298 for cpu/mobo/adapter, but I hope to get a little cash back by selling the celeron I bought to flash the board with.

Have not fully tested stability yet but broke 30 sec superpi @ 2.52Ghz. About 1 sec. faster than my Winchester @ 2,772Mhz (308 x 9) 1:1 mem.

2.52Ghz is at 1.47 Vcore and still stock cooler. Not sure about load temps,....I'll check tomorrow. Idles at about 31 C at about 18 C ambient. I'm at work now...took some screen shots to work with me on a usb drive. I deleted the cpu-z shot by accident after converting to jpg. I'll post it tomorrow. Once I figure out a way to mount a better heatsink, the 3dmark action will begin. :D

Here is the Cpu-z from my last post. Ran this speed for 29 sec. Superpi. Not bad for only slightly above 2.5Ghz.

Also, included is a shot of mem bandwidth at 250Mhz fsb with mem at 1:1 ---2.5-3-3 timings. With a Nvidia card I am now able to experiment with much higher fsb speeds.

With a little more voltage this should hit 2.6-2.7Ghz....still looking to mount a better cooler though.

EDIT: Per last post.....Superpi was at 210 x 12 with mem at 262mhz (4:5 ratio)

what mem timings are you runnig for the 29sec superpi.

i have a 400fsb 1.6 and my best time is 28sec with 162x16 ram at 205 2-2-2-5 cpu 2591ghz.

as i have the 400fsb i cant go over 168 fsb at 169 the system restarts. I have tested this with vcore upto 1.6 and dropped the multi down to 8 still same restart at 169

for now i am running at 133x16 stock vcore memory at 178 3:4 2-2-2-5 in silent mode with a xp-90 cooler and silent 90mm fan ready to be used as a htpc.

My main system is a p4 28 @ 3.7 250fsb ram @ 1:1 water cooled mcp650 2x 120.2 rads, 6600gt.i though this was quite and fast but the dothan system at 2591 is like a wisper compared and beats the super time by 10 secs and if i put the 6600gt 3dmark 01 scores 3500 points higher.

The timings were at 2.5-3-3-7. That was at 262mhz and fsb @ 210,....cpu at 2.52ghz. I might be able to shave another second off with higher bus speeds. Something like 252 x 10 instead of 210 x 12.
