Hey I've been reading through a lot of this post and I was wondering if someone can help me. I have a Gigabyte 965G DS3, E6300, Patriot 2gb 667 RAM, and a 7600GT.
When I start to play games that are pretty graphically demanding, my computer will restart. The temps read normal, so I don't think that could be it.
All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Suggestion - ditch the DS3
Any time I play games they just lock up after a few minutes.
I already exchanged my ram, so its not that. Just have to get a new board.
I was really considering updating the latest bios, is there anything I should worry about? And ditching the board isn't possible, I don't have a way to.
Nope, bios flashing is relatively straight forward. You can even do it via @bios in windows
I'm assuming @bios is a program. If it is, could anyone post me a link?

2GB Patriot Ram
e6700 CPU
1900xt vid card
650W Silverstone Power supply
I've had this system up and running now for about 3 months, no issues... until today.
Flashed bios to F6 and rebooted machine... no problems.
Tightened RAM to 4-4-4-12... no problems
Set fsb to 300 .... no problems
Set fsb to 360 ... haven't been able to get the system to boot since.
The voltages were all set to stock. I've cleared the CMOS by the jumper AND pulling the battery for 1, 5 and 10 minutes. Pulled the RAM, swapped PSU... nothing is helping. I get no video but all the lights, fans and hard drives spin. I've tried another Vid card but no change.
I'm thinking the board is dead (why is beyond me since I've gone past an fsb of 360 with older bios's with no issue).
Any ideas or something I'm missing?

I got a e6400 ... the strap screws it up for me at 325 Fsb ... so i had to jump to 400 ... its perfect after 400 ... btw, your ram? 4-4-4-8 works .... with fast memory ... 2.1 v ... im using a Patriot 2GB 5300 ....
(btw meant fast as in the memory enhance)
Somehow, my OS says im limited to 4-4-4-9 ... dunno why

And you're on the DS3 board? You'll have to use the Jmicron controller as the DS3 only has the ICH8...not ICH8R. No Matrix Raid for you! It's all in the Giga manual tho. Good luck!

I'm going to take the plunge and go Conroe. I'm going to get a DS3 (or S-3 since they are the same except the caps + Price ), and I had a few questions:
1) I see some people are using a Thermalright Ultra-90 or 120. Which way does the fan face when the whole thing is mounted (I really hope it doesn't face down toward the NB, or to the front toward the RAM)?
2) I've seen a few people post that they had this RAM working with this board, but I wanted to double check to make sure no one had issues. It's Kingston HyperX KHX6000D2K2/2G 2GB Kit DDR2-750:

3) I've heard the Northbridge gets really hot. Is there any aftermarket cooler I can put on it? I've got a few Thermalright NB heatsinks (that I used on various Nforce NBs), but the holes look like they are pretty far apart on these 965 boards.

I cannot get my ATAPI devices (especially my NEC-3550A) burning at more than 2x and I can't boot IDEs off PATA cards, just the mobo. I've already tried two kinds of PATA cards, Promise UltraATA 100TX2, and a Rosewill SiI 0608 based card which won't boot at all with devices attached to it.
Anyone else? These are some major problems I'm having.
any results with F7?

Guys, I know I've posted this a few times already. But the FAQ does not establish ANYTHING about the Memory Performance Enhance option. I've set it to TURBO on the F8a BIOS, and I believe that it helps with overclocking. My memory, which before was limited to 438 FSB, (Patriot Extreme Performance) is now able to do 450+. Now I know that other people usually have better clocks (I mean ... I couldn't even reach 333 FSB before the strap limit kicked in), but if it is true, then the TURBO setting should be able to let D9 memory go even farther... Test it ... [Can't believe no one figured out what Memory Performance Enhance actually does ... I don't even have an actual clue what it REALLY does]

DS3 with F5 bios. So far been an absolute dream to overclock this setup. Aside from a weird multiplier bug that causes some programs to report the wrong CPU clock speed (some progs see 3.6Ghz instead of the real 3.2Ghz) which is the only malfunction I can think of, I've had an excellent experience so far. If that's the only down side I have to deal with, I'll take it :D

I had some trouble with a DS3/E6600 combo when I installed Windows on an early BIOS (F3 I think) using a USB keyboard and mouse, then updated the bios to F6, and again as soon as I saw F7 come out. After this I moved the machine to an office where I used a PS2 mouse and keyboard (which worked fine in the BIOS). At the Windows login screen, the mouse would move the cursor but pressing any key on the ps2 keyboard would freeze windows, mouse and all. What's worse, the only USB keyboard/mouse I had there were wireless and required drivers. So I had to reinstall windows fresh, with the PS2 keyboard and mouse, and everything worked fine after that. Never had a BIOS update require me to reinstall windows, but I guess it happens.
The DS3/E6300 I'm working on right now shipped with the F6 bios. I installed 2x512mb of G.Skill DDR2-1000 4-4-4-5 rated to run at 2.2-2.3v, and the system posted fine right out of the box. I used Qflash to update it to F8a and everything seems great. THEN I installed windows :D
I also tried setting a mild overclock and running the ram at the rated DDR2-1000 speed, with the timings set to 4-4-4-12, but I forgot to CTRL+F1 and up the voltage. It posted fine but the OS bluescreened while loading, not surprisingly. Still, it makes me want to think this ram has some headroom if it can post at [almost] the rated timings on 0.4v-0.5v less than I'm supposed to be giving it.
This G.Skill definitely seems to be DS3-friendly.

Are you saying it is better to use a PS2 keyboard and mouse?
I like the MS laser mouse, but it only comes as a USB.
If you use a USB mouse and USB keyboard, how much would it degrade the overclock by?
Does anyone have any idea when Gigabyte might be issuing a BIOS revision to fix the ~450MHz limit with D9-based RAM on the DS3? It's really getting kind of old. I want to find out this RAM's potential (see sig), not the motherboard's.

And yes, I tried clear CMOS and reset CMOS and doesn't work. I suspect that @BIOS flash the mobo with a BIOS from other model or somethig wrong, but if this happened is a great failure for this software.

I posted a thread about the Gigabyte quad bios thingy that is supposed to recover in this type of situation. iirc, insert your Gigabyte CD and try booting. The er... 'intelligence' of the bios hardware/software is supposed to be able to recover a working BIOS from a CD or floppy during post. ...or some such thing.

This "trick" is only for DQ6, that has real dualBIOS (quad virtual).
DS3 has 1 BIOS chip. It says "virtual dual BIOS" but if the system doesn't even post it mean nothing xD

EDIT: my cpu has 1,392 vcore right now. I had it at 1,4 - 1,45 both crashes i think.
With my first overclock attempt I run orthos for 2 minutes or so and then my pc crashed (rebooted), I checked voltages and I had memory only at 1,8v then (default?) so I increased it with 0,1 and run orthos for 30 minutes and stopped it, it had no errors or warnings. Then I have been using my computer for many hours since the OC. Then suddenly during common desktop usage my pc reboots!
The voltages looks :banana::banana::banana::banana:ed up here but they are all OK in the BIOS.

You should have try using Q-Flash, which is originally integrated in the BIOS setup, but you will have to get a cheap floppy drive instead to store your new BIOS..Quote:

1) Remove the CMOS battery, and short circuit the battery socket for around 5sec.. replace the CMOS battery and try restart again..

If orthos fails it is not considerd stable by most ppl, it means that your CPU miscalculated something that it shouldn't miscalculate! Normally you'll solve this by upping voltage SOMEWHERE. I would say Vcore, but I don't know the settings of your mem (Stock speed, current speed, stock V, current V) and other things.Quote:

I just got a DS3 and overall I'm pretty happy with it. I was worried about the board not booting with Gskill HZ memory and my fears were realized when I first tried to boot. So after about the 10th combination of different memory configs, it finally posted for some reason and I was able to set the memory at 2.1v. This is on F6 bios. Right now I've only got it at 8x400, but I haven't had a chance to test it any further. Overall I'm happier with the DS3 than my Badaxe.

Most memory need 2.1 volts at 800mhz, and the only interesting timings are the first four. The rest doesn't do much and is normally good at auto/default.Quote:

I bought Corsair XMS6400C4.
It failed miserably to boot, giving me tons of small blips.
I put the original Kingston DDR533 back in and that too also blipped like hell, and for a while I thought I had killed somehting but I found out eventually that its just the Seating on the RAM in the board.
I would suggest that if anyone else has RAM that seems to be failing, make 100% the RAM is seated and even when oyu are 100% in the know... Check again... And again... AND AGAIN...
My Corsair works fine, as does the Kingston.
I borrowed some other RAM from my mates who would let me test theirs out and in nearly all cases, it gave me greif and then once I got it seated right, they all worked... EVERY SINGLE STICK OF RAM I HAVE TESTED ALL FAILED AT FIRST BUT WENT IN JUST FINE... I have tried 23 different pairs of RAM now... 21 mates who let me use their RAM and 2 of my own.
Just a note for you to consider anyway.
While I am here, does anyone have NFS-U2 running on their board?
I got 2 of these boards, E6300 @ 3.3 and a P4 Prescott 660 @ 4.3 and they both crash left right and center on me.
Just a guess......but you probably have them overclocked to high, or something not tweaked properly. Voltage or memory timings maybe?:fact:Quote:

I ran orthos for 8 hours with no error and then i stopped it manually. I am able to play games for hours with no crash.
Then when I'm working: surfing, dreamweaver, photoshop, 3ds max etc it has crashed several times, I get a bluescreen for 1/10 second that I can't possibly read and then it reboots. And I think on every crash I have been listening to music in winamp. Also what happens just before the crash is that the music hangs and rapidly repeats(you know like a fast shooting gun) for 1 second or so.
So I tried to clock my pc down again, and now I'm running on all normal settings, (don't remember just if i put memory at rated 1,9 or mb default 1,8, 1,9 i think.) And I got crash again, while working, music on.
Now I will test being music free for the next couple of days. (Thinking it might be winamp or the audio drivers) EDIT: I will immediately download new audo drivers too
I might also do a memtest, (just have to get a floppy :p: )
EDIT: I'll also test a new bios
Can you think of anything else that can be the cause of this problem?
Well those are 2x 512MB OCZ Value Pc5400, it cannot boot.....i tried with ram like kingmax, corsair, it works but ocz, i tried bios F7 didnt work tho, dunno if bios F8i beta fix this ?Quote:

I don't think anyone has had a problem with the F8i bios at stock settings. Some have complained it didn't help overclocking.
I read somewhere that some OCZ users had a problem snapping the modules into the socket.
S3 should also be included under these faq as they are basically the same boards with the same issues. Got one after killing my Asus P5W DH (and it wasn't from the 2.05v I ran through the NB, I dropped the damn mobo!) Was just shy of the 500mhz fsb mark when I dropped her :(
Stuck at 400mhz on the S3, haven't been able to find the USB to PS2 adapter for my mouse and keyboard! I'm assuming that's been my issue on the OC. Either that or the S3 hates my PQI Turbo ram (got it just shy of 1000mhz when attempting to break the 500mhz fsb barrier on a 975X chipset!)

I don't know if usb is an issue on overclocking but maybe you need to call the Geek Squad to find that adapter!:D The USB to PS2 adapters go for $1.50 to about $20. Looking at where you're located I'd bet somewhere within a tank of gas you could find the cheap version.Quote:

Just a noob question, but can all E6400's do atleast 400fsb ( with the correct multies of course ) assuming theres no problem with both ram and motherboard ?
My new ds3 is turning up tommorrow, are their any issues from booting from a sata dvd rom or will i have to chuck in the ide dvd rom to boot from dvd ?
Sort of... my early E6400 does 3.0G @1.35V, 3.2G @1.5V, 3.4G @1.55V and boots at 3.6G @1.6V but isn't truly 100% stable above 3.2G. Even at 3.2G it often boots with only 1 core detected and runs hotter than I like. I'm pretty sure that I could get it stable at 3.4G with more voltage and better cooling of the CPU, NB, ram and mobo but for now 3.0G (376FSB) is the max it will do for 100% stable 24/7 use.Quote:

My board came with the F4 bios, and for some reason my Burners wouldnt detect. Once i flashed the F6 all worked fine..odd. Im still on stock cooling (for now), i set the fan to run full speed, i can get 3.4g at 1.3v 3dmark and gaming stable, just hitting 60c..(gotta get a new cooler).
Whats this USB issue i read about? while my system is just sitting there ill get a BSOD with some sort of USB error, yes im using a USB mouse. O well overall im happy:D

Hey, having a little DS3 trouble.
System ran fine for a month, then yesterday I installed a new HSF, ran Orthos for one hour, and shut it off.
Now when I press the power button, the fans & HDD spin, but there's no monitor signal, and no beeping.
Hell even tried booting without memory or video card, and still no beeping.
Cleared the bios, took the battery out for 12 hours, nothing.
Also, don't know if this matters, but if I hit the reset switch, the DVDRW "resets" itself.
Tried some new memory, still no boot.
So....dead mobo or dead cpu?
Exact same thing happened to me with F8i bios. I RMAed the board yesterday but hopefully it isn't my CPU.

Yes I was also using the F8i bios, but it had been working fine for me.
The only thing I did differently last night, aside from the new HSF, was running Orthos with 400Mhz FSB(No increased voltage) and no fan blowing on the NB.
Lovely...RMA it is I guess.
I'm ordering a XBX2 as a replacement.
By the way, it won't cause any problems that we loaded a beta bios will it? :rolleyes:
Mine was working fine as well, I was on stock volts using my Tuniq Tower and was trying to find my max FSB on stock volts of an E6300. I put 450 in bios and went, it got into the Windows loading screen then restarted and never came back on. I hope it won't cause problems with the beta bios, I'm RMAing it through NewEgg.
With hardware monitoring software, does anyone else's 12V rails read low? In Everest I get 11.38 while in Easytune I get 11.85. A digital multimeter gives me 12.1 however. I can't get MBM or Speedfan to work and the BIOS only reports the rails as "OK." Annoying.

I installed Tuniq 2 nights ago, everythin worked for hour or so, until it's back plate shortrd the cpu socket "pins". Insulator was too thin... What HFS u installed? Some scythe models have same problem. Need to use Zalmans backplateQuote:

I have vista installed on my computer and its running fine.
I have always since installing Vista (numerous builds, I am on the RTM now) had trouble with Hibernate. I have tried a few BIOS versions on my DS3, tweaked with some BIOS settings, started from scratch, and nothing has resolved it.
What happens is in Vista I click Hibernate, it shuts down the computer, but then a second after that it starts itself back up again and resumes from Hibernate! Very annoying because I love to use the hibernate function.
If anyone has any information on if this is a known bug or not, or what could be causing it, because I have tried everything and even after cleaning the BIOS it still does it so it doesn't seem to be a board problem because nobody else has this problem.

I'm running e6300 (7x430 5-6-6-20) 2x1gb Buffalo select 6400 with DS3 rev.1 bios F7. Processor runs at 1.1875volts, everything else at default volts and settings.

There is one question I have: has anybody replaced the nothbridge heatsink? How could it be removed without damaging the board, or is it worth it? HS is very hot. Although everything is running stable.
I have a problem with my ds3, with F8i bios I run it 450x7 (6300)...
Now I flash it to F9, put on same clock-s that I used before, restart, but computer wont boot anymore...only Black (blank) screen.
I Tryed to clear CMOS...
Took the battery out about 1 hour...didnt help....
What should I do next?

I've been running this board (revision 1) in my gf's computer for a while with the f7 bios and a p4 chip. Finally upgrading it to an E6400. Other info: mini typhoon cooler, antec neo 480w psu, corsair value ddr2-667 (will run @ 800 5-5-5-15)
Is an o/c of 3.0-3.2 reasonable to expect with minimal voltage increase?
Is there any fsb ranges that prove problematic with this board that I should avoid?
Is there a "strap" changeover point I should also avoid?
I suggest you try FSB 400 right away with memory timings to AUTO (at first, you can tighten later) and system voltages to AUTO. The DS3 will adjust vCore automaticly to approx 1.4. Test stability. Later you can try to lower vCore slowly. Most people are many hours Orthos (small,blend,large) stable with 1,35-1,4 vCore @ 3.2 GHz. You have to find out what your CPU needs.Quote:

I suggest at least Small and Blend for 8+ hours. Monitor Temp with CoreTemp. I don't like temps > 65-66 C.
Setting ram timings to auto may give more conservative timings giving more chance for initial success.
