965XE Cold bugged

I tried to to push the 965XE chip under the cascade but I had start problems and the chip would not start at the warmest temp, it only booted once and that was short lived bench session.

I estimated the start up evap temp at -50c, I had to unplug third stage and let it warm up to start up. I did this a few times.

I will swap out chips and try another soon, I wanted to really push the Presler on P5WDG2-WS 8 phase power board.

With the odd problems with cat 6.4 I am having crossfire problems when I restart and not being able to restart 100% of the time, its more like 25% with the driver failing on this Asus WS board.

Everything is fine under vapo and so far, I can break 6Ghz and bench at 5.6Ghz or so.

This chip/board combo is stronger than the P5WD2-E and 955XE chip. I will start a new thread on Vapo once I get more benches done.

It's not that your WS M/B got problems with cold? Doubt the cpu is the reason.

Random chips have shown lower showing lower start temps for about a year now. This is the lowest Intel chip temp I have worked with so far. Once started I can go to max temp and I can reboot no problem. If I cycle power then I would need to drop back to -50c.

A good P4 will fire upwards to -120c

So if I got you right you can't go over say -50 on boot but while you're in windows you can go for full speed on the cascade without problems and then start benching and such?

is your problem only powering up the board? this sounds more like cold boot and not cold bug.

Well, "bug" on AMD may not be exactly the same.

Chip is bugged when booting past certain temp. Those who go here will know what I mean.

I can adjust expansion valves on second and tird stage to get as warm as -62c on the evap.

I can unplug the third stage as well. This is not a good option as I have had a few failed starts and could damage the compressor if I restart too soon.

At least the problem is isolated to booting up only. Do you have any theories on what could be causing this?

usually a coldboot problem is due to the motherboard.

neo2 platinums being prime examples.

Intel says the thermal trip for heat is being kicked in and preventing the machine from starting. This is self protection of the core working incorrectly.

This might be fixable in bios

With AMD the "cold bug" is a result of the memory controller and clock gen being on the core, with Intel it would have to be related to thermal protection of the core.

sounds like the problem i had with a 920 and a 631 on dry ice (wouldn't boot, but if i lifted off the tube for a second it would and function perfectly until i tried to reboot). 640 and 830 worked well though, perhaps it's a 65nm thing?

Hi Fugger , we have same problem with our 955ES and Asus p5wd2-e Premium..

at -50° mobo dont boot and this is a bug on CPU but only at the start.

So let's try this :

Power up your Phase and enter in Bios quickly . Then wait the temp drops under -100° and set your cpu for a boot at 6 Ghz or over.
Yuo will need -120° for booting at 6 Ghz ...
When you ready , save your setting and exit from bios .... Yu will boot whitout problem .. :)

If your sistem crash :

power off phase

wait the temp rise at -50°

power up mobo, first boot will fail !

power off , wait 5 sec. then reboot again.

power up phase and mobo and enter in bios quickly.

This worked for us , i hope this can help you.

Those XE-Preslers are very nich chips, though.
Our 955XE was 5.6GHz benchable on DryIce.
Yours did 6GHz with "not the best cooling You can get". If you solve those problems i think it`ll get somewhere near 7GHz.
P.S. What Vcore are you running at ?

I am surprised people forgot... cold bug back in winchester in AMD time was actually cold boot problem. For same CPU, depending on mobo, some would boot at lower temp while some just won't....
Variance got even more depending on individual stepping... (this is around where I bailed on phase for a while... after 4-5 winchester cpus and 6-7 mobos).
Symptons clearly showed me that whatever is in bios to work with CPU to prevent thermal damage, etc just wasn't designed to work with the temp it wasn't really meant to be subjected.
I get gut feeling same is true for these intel mobo and CPU.
Have you tried totally different mobo yet Charles? Just to see if it boots up at colder temp on other mobo? (meaning non-asus)
If you have bit off difference in where you can boot up depending on mobo, it obviously is something that can be worked with bios.... (as per willing to... well maybe they would do it for you :P)
Presler is soooo hot though -_-; How much volt you crack up when you are on vapo?

PS) and how do you insulate your mobo?

As said before this cold bug is not due to mobo. That's what i thought at the begining but is due to CPU. I tried disabling temperature monitoring with no go on a 920. Now with this 631 i had no problems booting @-70º on the same mobo... Hopefully is bios fixable...

BTW, that 965 looks great, with some real cold it should get over 6ghz with no problems... :toast:

Ok... try this... disable the temp monitoring and let the cpu get overheated... it WILL shut down despite the fact you disabled it :P
All current crop cpu do have this last safety measure and mobo do come with support for this which can't be accessed by "bios" per say.

Think of it as hard reset vs soft reset :p

Maybe a cpu itself feature ? :stick: if so, it wouldnt have nothing to do with the mobo... :fact:
