what's the best air cooling to cool opty 165?
Heatsink wise its between the old XS favourite the Thermaltake Big Typhoon or Tuniq Tower (also maybe the Sythe Ninja). Everyone has their own favourites but I personally like the TTBT as its simple and effective with an easily changable fan, although there have been very good reviews about the Tuniq Tower but i personally haven't ever owned one so can't commen.
The best air cooling in the way of efficency is Scythe Ninja + 2x120mm fans @1-2k rpm. Nothing can match that.
If you`re looking for quiet + effective - Scythe Ninja + 2x120mm fans @ <1k rpm or Thermaltake Big Typhoon.
I fairly extensively looked at 4 top heatsinks (XP-120, Scythe Ninja, Tuniq Tower, Big Typhoon).
I submit 2 important considerations:
1) Noise tolerance. If you can tolerate medium speed 120mm fans (80-100cfm), look to the Tuniq Tower (with stock fan) or Big Typhoon (buy your own fan).
If you want noise-be-damned cooling, the BT pulled away from the pack in my testing, but you'll have to spring for your own fan. Out of the box, the Tuniq Tower had some very good results for me.
If you need quiet operation, the Scythe Ninja with a low rpm fan, Tuniq Tower (included fan bus), and Big Typhoon are good choices.
2) Airflow of your case. Tower style coolers are generally located for airflow across the motherboard, whereas the Big Typhoon works great if you have a sidepanel fresh air duct. If you have good cross motherboard airflow, you can even operate the Scythe Ninja fanless. I do, even on a overclocked 1st generation Prescott running F@H 24/7.

Big Typhoon would be my choice. Not only you get excellent cooling for the CPU you also cool your mobo.
A Zalman 9500 pointed at an exhaust fan gives me great temps. Better than my Scythe Ninja, TTBT, and the others in my air cooler graveyard.
xp-90c w/ panaflo 92mm fan

Jester. I know you like that config, and I'd admit it is decent.
But you're approaching fanboyism fast when you type that under "best air cooling?"
I'd say the TTBT or the Tuniq tower, I use the tower and I'm pleased with it. The TT has gotten a fair bit of accolades here on the forums and does well in review so those two really seem the best choises atm.
I don't know about the TTBT, but the xp-90c is just as good as the tuniq tower.Quote:

Hell, I'd use the XP-90C even if it wasn't better, just for the lack of installation issues vs. Tunig!
To be honest, I don't see Jester as any more of a fanboy than Crankster. IMHO
I love my TT BT. 3.01 ghz at 1.52 vcore, idle/load - 26/34
Gonna mount a basic temperature probe on the side of my IHS soon to see if those temps are remotely accurate.
I'm not sure which mobo you are using, but mine loves the XP-90's downward air flow; not only does it keep my cpu at 30c idle, 46c load, it also keeps the NB nice and cool. Also, install was cake:)
Ive said it b4, 90mm dont kick it today for extreme overclocking, 120mm is the future for now.
Well, for extreme overclocking, watercooling or phase change (or better) is the way to go. As for air cooling, There are some very good 90mm solutions that have it all over some 120mm coolers. Just because it's 120mm, doesen't make it automatically better.Quote:

Correct but the fact its a 120mm BT makes it great, you dont need water today esp on amd64's, the 90mm Thermalrights have seen their day only fanboys love and they are same ones who used to flame Thermaltake here.
I admit this is a great cooler(XP-90c), but sorry, it isn't the king. People beat my temperatures using a big typhoon lapped(mine is lapped as well).
Get the BT, Ninja is the worst pain in the ass to install IMO. If you like that kind of horrible rush, go ahead and get that. :D
I think most air coolers run better than 444c load :DQuote:

I admit, mine's not too quiet, but I can't complain about its performance, I was about to buy the bit Typhoon(had it in my hands ready to checkout) but changed my mind at the last minute.
Running at 2.92ghz w. 1.42v(1.45v in bios), I get 26*/40*C idle/load. Not bad imo.
I haven't had any issues installing my ninja. I would got with it or the xp90C. You can't go wrong with either one.
lol :rofl:Quote:
