Disaster has struck!!

Well folks, bad news I'm afraid.

My PCP&C 510w ASL SLI decided to crap out on me last weekend and take a bunch of stuff with it. The list of casualties is pretty staggering....

FX60....dead.
Expert....dead.
7800GTX 512....dead.
seagate sata drive....dead.
Sony DVD....dead.
Mitsumi FD....dead.
Mach II controller...yep dead too.

Surviving hardware was 2 raptors, 1 of my 7800GTX 512 cards, my crucial ballistix (isn't that ironic) and my X-Fi card. So far this stuff seems fine, but given everything taken out, these items may exhibit signs of trouble down the road. Who knows.

Not sure what the hell happened, but given the recent threads about PSUs and power hungry SLI, I guess the PCP&C was just over worked. It must have surged badly.

Needless to say, this is a pretty big set back. I'm gonna need to circle the wagons for while. I've parted out my Multimedia rig to raise cash and combine my best remaining parts from both PCs to get me one solid system. I'll be getting the Mach II fixed and then it'll be up for sale along with most of my water cooling gear. Gonna lay low for a while and lick the wounds:)

Anyways, more importantly than me whining about my hardware death, is a warning to everyone out there....be careful! If you are running an overl:banana::banana::banana::banana:ed FX chip and big SLI/CF cards make sure your PSU is up to the task!

I'll be hanging around and chatting, but it'll be while before I step into the dep end of the pool again:(

ouch. really sorry to hear that. can you rma that psu to pcp&c, or does oc'ing kill the warranty?

I feel your pain, Mike. That's why I had to take a break from OCing for a while. I hung out in the distributed computing and chat sections for a long time. It's just recently that I started visiting the hardware sections of the forum again. :)

At least you still have the Marauder. :toast:

Surely overvolting PSU's taking out equipment can be claimed from the PSu manufacturer? such things should bein place to stop surges and cause a cut out.

PCP&C is RMAing. At least I'll have a new 510w SLI Turbo Cool :)

The CPU is a lost cause, as is the mobo and the 7800GTX 512 since all had been hard modded. Although I might be able to sneek something by RMA, I don't play that game. I modded it and OC'd it...its the price you pay.

The only thing that bothers me is that my overclocking and modding didn't kill anything. Its been running this way for weeks. But, while i was gaming last week, the PSU "popped" and the magic smoke came out. That was all.

I agree. It's definitely the PSUs fault. The only thing i changed in over 4 weeks was adding another HD. I did that 2 days before she blew. I think that put it over the edge. I'm surprised the overvolt protection didn't kick in before things fried.

I told PCP&C about the situation. They are getting me a new PSU, but the rest of the hardware is a no go.

Unfortunately, due to my hard mods, RMAing that stuff back is pretty tricky.

Sorry to hear about that Mike. I can just imagine my rig crapping out, I would be out a pc for quite some time. On the other Hand doesn't PCP&C insure the components hooked up to your psu? I thought I read taht somewhere.

I will try looking into that for you. It may not be true but I am sure I read taht somewhere before. I have a feeling Ice Czar over at [H] would know the answer. He knows pretty much everything else about PSU's

Yowza !!! Ouch !!!

Man i can feel your burning wallet right now. That sucks. I hope your future hardware brings better luck to you. That FX60 loss alone would make me wanna shoot myself. :(

My heartfelt sympathy mate. I hope you get everything sorted out soon.

Yep :(

Not to worry, though. I've already sprung for some replacement parts (see the sig). But, I'll be without phase change and SLI for a while. I need to keep everything I have in my sig PC running without a hitch, so no extreme OCing for a bit.

By the time AM2 comes around I'll be looking around again :)

Yes, I think it was. I beleive the PCP&C are hearty power supplies that hold up better than most. They appeared to handle the high end SLI with ease. But, when they do go bad, they go real bad I guess.

Its funny that this is all coming to light just this last week. FCG had a thread about power consumption a few weeks back, but no one put it together that high end SLI systems were crashing with the current batch of power supplies.

What's important for folks to know is that there is more risk than just having your PSU shutdown in over volt protection if the power requirements are more than the PSU can handle. My situation might be rare, but it can obviously happen.

To be honest, I told Major about all this last week, but i was going to keep quiet. Then I saw the posts about power supplies being over worked form high end SLI systems and the troubles that were surfacing. That's when i knew I needed to step up and talk about what happened to me. I don't want folks to be paranoid or anything....but if they have a high end SLI system they need to watch the PSU issue.

Sorry to hear man :( That is some kind of loss....check into PCP&C though...not only should they have RMA policy, they should also have insurance for lost computer hardware as a result of lack of performance.

There have been several PSU reviews using high loads to test PSU efficiency and if they actually met claimed results. In every one I have read not one PSU ever shut off at a safe point (what I would consider safe to be more technically correct) due to too high of a load or overheating..

Your situation is not rare and manufacturers producing multi-rail PSU's that have the rails split are not helping this situation in the least.
