Zippy 700W impression and fan mod

Initially I was going to get the PCP&C 850W but I'm never a fan of split rails, after some research and hunting on the net I found only two PSU that matches my need, the Zippy/Emacs 700W PSU (PSL-6701P) and the Athena Power AP-P4ATX85FE EPS12V 850W, both of them are in the exact same price range and the 12v rail is very close, but I have never heard of the Athena Power, couldn't find any reviews anywhere, and not that it matter but one quick visit to their website had clearly steer me away from this brand. So my only option was the Zippy, after a 20min conversation and bunch of technical questions with Edward at Zippy's office in CA I felt very confident in getting this unit, and so I did from servercase.com.

Well, I received this thing yesterday and to my surprised it's pretty big and heavy comparing to the PCP&C 510 SLI, construction and quality is top notch, but I was warned that this unit is very loud so it was being jump start as soon as I took it out of the box, indeed...this stock fan reminds me of the dang 92mm Tornado!! After 10 hours of work at data center the last thing I need is to come home to some noisy machine again :lol: I could of slice the stock fan wire and hacked up the PSU case to install a pot or fan controller, but I still have some AMD stock hs/f laying around so I use the 80mm that came with my 170 Opteron instead, this fan has a thermistor so when the temperature reach about 106 F' it could spin up to 5000rpm @57cfm so it's an excellent choice for replacement. The 3pin connector from this fan fits pretty well onto the PSU's 2pin header, it's very secure and wont' come off unless I yanked violently.

This little fan pull lots of air and VERY quiet, I can't hear any fan noise even after couple hours of dual prime unless I place my ears directly on the PSU. All rails are rock solid with my 170 running at 3.10Ghz, I'll push it more once I received the Gskill HZ ram tomorrow, for now here's a couple pictures for your viewing pleasure ;)

wimpy mid tower or smaller case need not apply!! Even the Antec Full tower barely have enough space to fit this beast ;)

did you disable the thermistor from the delta/amd fun? if yes how did you do it (I tried to cut it from mine and now appears to be dead)
sanyos are very good fans and i see that this one is 80x38 (or 80x32)?? so it may have more pressure than the delta

Man that psu is big! Are concerned about heat getting trapped between it and your optical drives?

I left the thermistor intact, if the PSU get too hot so the fan will do it's job to pull even harder, but I'm still surprise how strong this little AMD fan is!! :D Since I'm running with the side panel opened for phase change heat isn't an issue, even if the panel is close it should have just enough room to get some hot air out. ;)

ok I thought you didn't use it the blue wire...
the sanyo fan is 80x32 or 80x38 ? look thiker than the delta...

I didn't, the blue one is for temperature monitoring purpose and the PSU only has 2pin header so all I did is make sure the black and red are connected :D The stock Sanyo ACE 80 is 1.25" thick, it's quite heavy and too loud for workstation, definitely wouldn't want this thing running anywhere close to my computer room :lol:

Just a little update, with my 510 SLI this 170 running at 3.30Ghz @1.65v the pc would ALWAYS reboot itself after 5min of prime, the 510 ran out of breath pretty quick but now with this new Zippy the core 0 kept going while core 1 just error out after 10min of dual prime, no reboot whatsoever, all rails are rock solid...I love this thing!!!

what did u get for suidcide shot maxes with each psu?

edit: damn, that san ace fan is 51 dbs......!!!!!!! freaking loud.

I have also changed the stock fan in my Zippy 700.. I have never heard such a loud fan in a psu!! I have put an enermax fan 55 cfm(if i remember correct) where the stock fan was and one more fan in the front of the psu(on the outside). The psu still runs cold and it is much more quiet..
one thing more. Zippy is the best psu i have ever tested.. With this i managed to take my X2 3800 to 3405 with 2.01 vcore(about 300+ watts only the cpu)!!

When I had PC P&C 510 sli I also changed that super loud 5K rpm fan. But to ensure temps are ok I installed additional low rpm fan at the front of PSU. So 2 quiet fans were better than 1 loud.

suicide shot with 510SLI it was only 3.35 but as soon as I launch spi the pc reboot itself. I haven't try max suicide with the Zippy but I have no problem boot right into windows and run spi at 3.40Ghz. Zippy Powa!!! :D :D

I hear this type of loud fan at our data center on daily basis, but for workstation at home it's ridiculous to have this stuff screaming at your ears. I didn't add 2nd fan to the front as I found the AMD fan works perfectly fine, it moves tons of air and very quite. after hours of dual prime at 3.20Ghz the air coming out of the back of this PSU is only tiny bit warm, this zippy runs surprisingly cool!!! totally agreed with you....best PSU I've ever seen and own :toast:

Thanks man ;) yup this thing is beast as far as size and powa concern! definitely need a deep case for it. :D :D

Man, you shouldn't cut it, you have to join the legs of the thermistor, doing a short ( i don't know the exact meaning ) on it.

Their gaming powersupplies dont look bad either, but man I want the 700W single 12A rail! *drool*

well guys, JUST got my zippy 700, and yeah the 51db fan is about to be switched out with the AMD opty fan for me too. Anyway, just thought I would share that I can now suicide shot at 2.78 mhz on stock volts. and 2.8 now takes .025 LESS volts to be game / 24/7 stable. Was 1.425 before, now it's 1.4. BTW, mine is silver and looks nice, not sure why some of u say it's ugly, matches nicely with the aluminum on my 7707 I think. MONDAY the rd-20/pa120.3/g5 gets back up and running! Then I'll see what this psu can really do with some H20. Well, I think I am done for now, this SIG will last me till quad core.

Thanks ben! That Sanyo fan looks like it is good quality... made in japan and looks heavy duty, is it really that unbearable?

Now... to make this fit in my P180 Case :-D

Hey Ben,
Can you explain little bit more why you're not a big fan of split rails and pc p&c 850ssi? I just got one but it had to rma'ed due to a dead -5V rail. Maybe I should just cancel the rma and return it instead.

Most split rails PSU have anywhere between 15~18A on each, I just do not like the idea of limiting my motherboard and cpu to only 15~18A especially when I ran the dual cores at 3.2Ghz or higher. Now, if they're about 25~30a each then it might worth considering, but if it didn't get used up by the mobo and cpu then the rest on that first rail pretty much go to waste, you can't shift those unused power to 2nd or 3rd rail for accessories (hdd, video card, etc.)

The reason I insist having it shipped USPS is that a worst case scenario involves paying 15% taxes on the insured value. To note is that only 1 in 10 packages are imposed taxes on. :)

Again, Zippy Canada will directly sell you one. Not sure what courier they use. Make sure to specify the PSL-6701P... at first he thought I was talking about the PSL-6700P which is higher on the 5v and lower on the 12v.

Forgot to mention though, this place also apparently carries them for the low price of $511 (search for Zippy): www.sosinfo.qc.ca
