Just some quick tests on errata 123 and how it effects memory bandwidth.

I was just doing some reading on errata 123 after reading through this and it is suppose to deal with a bug found in some opteron and X2 chips dealing witht he L2 cache,,, if your CPU has it then it needs to be enabled to avoid hang ups or problems when trying to bypass the cache,, but if it doesnt have the bug you get better performance with the option disabled,,
here is the original context:
This BIOS feature is a workaround for the bug. It allows you to disable the cache bypass feature and avoid the bug from manifesting.
When enabled, the processor will not bypass the L2 cache to prefetch data from the system memory.
When disabled, the processor will continue to bypass the L2 cache for certain cache line fill requests. This improves its performance.
When set to Auto, the BIOS will query the processor to see if it is affected by the bug. If the processor is affected, the BIOS will enable this BIOS feature. Otherwise, it will leave it disabled.
If your processor is affected by this bug, you should enable this BIOS feature to prevent the processor from hanging or corrupting data. But if your processor is not affected by this bug, disable this BIOS feature for maximum performance.

It only applies to dual core, altho I have no way of testing if left on AUTO in bios if it will affect single core memory bandwidth or not.
I've not had any problems with it disabled, but some may so you just have to test !
Well nice findings, Major. I am still wondering why it is enabled when you flash the BIOS? I have to restart.....hmmm to disable it :)

I just ran pi 1m 3x each with it on auto and disabled with my 144 and auto was faster then disabled. It was about 0.12 sec faster on auto. I never messed with it before as I did not know what it was for.

kinda makes sense, if it's simply bypassing the cache to go to the ram, it'll do the same if enabled or disable for either dual or single core cpu's :DQuote:

I set this option to auto in the bios and it sticks....so I need it enabled. This is on a single core Opty 148. The difference is minimal, but hey, whatever. :toast:
hmm this is interesting I'll give it a go on my 148 when I get home and post results, at a lan right now :)

My results are inconclusive, but as others have mentioned, we need to find out a way to see wht AUTO enables for our systems. Then we can see if there is a difference.
According to that article, setting it to auto and then rebooting willl let you know if you need it. It accesses the cpu and if it needs it, it'll stay auto.
