Yeah even if they're specced for higher, it's usually not good for stable clocks anyways. A to the edge overclock and 55C have not been friends on my Athlon chips. AMD's like the temps for maximum clocking. Maybe give or take a few degrees, I know some dual core and air guys are running them warmer these days.
do you have an independent probe on your opt 170 or is it a board sensor,,, not all boards give accurate temps for optys,,,, also what cooler is it and what mhz and vcore,,,

as long as its under 60 it shouldn't harm your cpu, although that being said I have noticed with all of my 90nm a64's that over 50 starts being unstable when ocing. I believe I read somewhere that for every 10 degrees or so it you take off it doubles the lifespan(don't quote me on that lol) but the point is...cooler = more cpu life
I would like to concur. In a cool ~25c room I get ~ 45c from my 175 with a TTBT and its stock fan when I have it oc'd to 2640 @ 1.36v BIOS/1.39v CPUZQuote:

i have the same problem as you with 1.4v i get temps of 54C with a big typhoon. i think our opterons just don't have proper ihs contact

It's not an issue with my HSF being seated right, I had the same problem with my Zalman, which I reseated with no change. Here are a couple of pics of the contact between my CPU and HSF.

Alot of these Opterons are misreporting temps. Believe me. Feel the heatsink for yourself or use check it with a temp probe. 55-60C is definitely hot to the touch and your heatsink will be pretty hot if it is really running that hot.
OK, I took the side panel off and felt the HSF as best I could (P180 is super cramped). I couldn't find a spot that was even remotely hot. The heatpipes were a bit warm, but nothing uncomfortable in the least.Quote:

I won't dispute that, heat is the enemy. But how long to you plan to depend on the CPU you are currently using? I am looking at a drawer full of old but still functional CPUs that tell me that even if I get only half or maybe even a quarter of the usual life span of a cpu (10 years? 7?) I will probably be upgrading again before it dies, maybe even twice :). I care about heat for overclocking stability but the affect on MTBF rarely crosses my mind anymore, just part of the hobby. Now businesses and typical users who look at computer spending as an investment are a whole other matter as they very well could be using the same hardware 5 years from now.Quote:
