Which one? Zalman ZM-NB47J or ZMNB32J ?? For Dfi Lanparty Ultra-D nf4 w/ 3ghz opteron

I recently got an opteron that does almost 3GHZ :woot:

However, at 290, the chipset fan is LOUD :eek:

I was thinking of passive cooling, will that work? :confused:

Ah yes, i have the same problem.. i dont have all my kit yet.. but i have an ultra-d here and man its fan was loud compared to any of my other fans.. I also got a ZM-NB47J, but i haven't mounted it yet because i'm not sure yet how to bend it because i don't have my 7800GTX yet.. and come to think of it.. i wonder if it would even fit, the GTX is a very long card...
I don't mean to thread jack, but does anybody have any pics of a 7800GTX on a DFI NF4 board to see how far it sits over the nb fan?

But, should I go with the blue, or gold Zalman?

I'd say the blue one as it's got more surface area.. it's taller.. but they are both too tall to fit under the video card so you have to bend them anyways.

I found out that copper is the best material to take heat away and aluminum is the best material to release that heat into the air. SO it depends but I personally would go with gold if airflow and blue if not a lot of air flow.

I'm here, thats my mod on the first post :)

Go with the blue ZM-NB47J its easier to bend into shape as its aluminium and does a fantastic job. Aluminium is the better material for a low airflow situation such as this too I believe.

I PM'd you back about temps, with my Zalman I idle sub 30 degrees and hit around 35 load with 1.6V Vchipset, thats with a 92mm fan running silently blowing on the PWM and chipset area. Beforehand I was hitting into the 50s with the stock chipset sink.

Configure SmartGuardian to lower the chipset rpm a bit.

Mine is at about 44-45ºC idle, at fan spins at 2800-3000rpm.... for me its inaudible.

In summer was at 48-49º and about 3500rpm

Just rise the maxrpm temp in SmartGuardian to 58º, or play a bit with the threeshold bar to get the rpm where you want.

The video card (connect3d gto @ 16 pipes :toast: ) didn't quite fit in without touching the heatsink.
Now, I'm not an electrical engineer, but as far as I'm concerned, putting metal to a circuit is usually unhealthy.
So I put a layer or two of good ol' electric tape on.




Well, that's pretty much it, same temps as with stock, so I now have a system fan that kicks in after 40c

I have a swiftech mcx159r, but on my expert, i'd say isn't enough that zalman to cool pasively the chipset, cos mine gets to 48º, buy i touch it and it looks way hotter... :stick: BTW i have a vf700 near who cools it to 42º at low rpm's...

I think which if i'm having problems with a better cooler than yours, you won't be able to cool it pasively, but you maybe have your vga throwing air to it, so then would work ok, but not 100% passive though. :)

BTW wth were you thinking of to blend the cooler mounted on the board!?!?!?! You could have damaged your chipset easily... :nono:

These are impossible to mod enough to fit if you own an arctic silencer!

The arctic silencer hangs so far off the back of the card and means there is no where for the fins to be bent to.

GET THE BLUE ONE
i installed the blue one a few days ago, my chipset idles at about 36, down from 39. and the loads during games get no more than 42 but i havnt primed for a while lately so i cant tell u for sure.

if u have a dfi nf4 ultra/sli and if your using just 1 video card, then just move the vid card to the 2nd pci-e slot and it will work just fine, no performance loss and the heatsink fits just fine.

Temps are low <40c in winter at stock, with open case, no fan is needed. Hotter seasons/overclocked (300fsb), Need slowspeed fan, like I have the vantec 120mm blowing on it thru the gpucooled radiator:

Same, but I had a spare 9200SE heatsink around, so I used that instead. :woot:

Temperatures are worse then stock though, 63C was the max reached so far.

Keeping in mind this is with the Opteron 165 in my signature. :clap:

Grab this when it is back in stock Copper is MUCH easier to bend.

Pin bending:
Get Stiff 1.5" wide putty knife so you can bend a row @ a time.
Do it right, do it B4 Mounting, do a dry mount and check vidcard clearance. Only had to cut 2 pins

Wifes Pc chipset temp - 41c doing rosetta (DC opty) Best setup of my 3 DFI board by 2c. Only cooling is from the zalman VF-700Cu fan on the vidcard.

Man, that is pretty terrible to see, you could have just moved the card to the lower slot without destroying the heatsink as I did on my board :D
