HEXUS has learnt that ATi Technologies has sent out an official communication to select Add-In-Board (AIB) partners, that endorses an increase in the clock frequencies at which products based on its flagship RADEON X1800 XT (R520) ASIC can be shipped at.

Personally, I think it's a desperate attempt to keep the crown....
But nVidia's partners do it...why not ATI's? :)

they upped the vdd and oc'ed the card:) and added some faster memory.

We should be seeing some innovative coolers as a result of this, looking forward to the day the XT goes into mass production and we actually have some choice from AIB partners. But their primary obstacle is just that: mass production of these high end parts.

This announcement ammounts more to raising the stock clocks rather than announcing that AIB partners can pre-overclock the cards.
i saw this coming a mile away.
I dont like this from any of the companies but specially from ati, they had all the time in the world to launch a final decente card.

Exactly...IIRC the only company who released overclocked cards with ATi cores was HIS.
I wouldn't call it desperate, but it's definitely an attempt to try and bring in some attention.
They're crazy if they think another 25mhz on the core and ram is going to handle the 7800gtx 512mb card though...
See but HIS and other extreme cards had to use external applications to overclock the cards within Windows if I recall. They still weren't allowed to change the clockspeeds set in the BIOS.
just wait till gainward release their golden sample watercooled 512mb GTX, likely to see 625mhz stock in the bios, ATI wont compete with that for a while.

These cards are underclocked at launch with very conservitive clocks. Example stock XL memory could do 1600Mhz consistantly and the core is the exact same as the XT on exact same PCB other than memory.
The XL core has no problem matching XT speed stock, that is a problem as people can mod the XL in a flash. This is also a problem for GTX as I can drop speed on my XL and match the default 2k5 score of the new GTX 512 (and have image quality).
The XL memory should be bumped up to 1600Mhz and the XT to 1800+. The XL core could go 100Mhz bump
The big point in the X1800's is HQ filtering...that is simply awesome...Transparancy AA is IMO slighly better lookign then Adaptive AA, but there is only so much that you can tell ofcourse by looking at screenshots...Quote:

the 1.2ns ram is rated for 1600mhz so i dont know why they dont take advantage of the full potential of the ram for both xl and xt, and the 1.1ns ram could be used on the xt if aib partners want to release their own special editions with 1800mhz speed. In terms of core clock, the xl's are using the older lower clocking cores, so a lower clock allowed ati to clear out their stocks. the newest revision gives excellent yields at 650mhz+ so this boost makes sense, and speed binning may provide an even higher clocked PE or even a product tiered between the current xl and xt clocks - maybe even the xl clocks for the new core being raised.
Nice point, when I watch a jet dust the carrier deck or Black hawk skin cruise a few feet above the water it lets me the X1800 delivers the best visuals hands down.
I have the GTX missed out on a lot for the first few months of BF2. Another problem I had with the GTX that was driver related that many of you may be experiancing. When I opened a scope and it would often close the scope down, usually when you needed to shoot to save your own life.
I play at best quality on both but I did have Rivatuner loaded and the profiles may have been resident on the GTX reducing image quality thinking I needed frame rate.
The memcontroller on the R520 is the problem. It can never handle 1600mhz on the XL with the vcore it has. And vcore can't be upped on the older revision core because it isn't stable then. The card would need a better cooler; remember that these cards have to run in the hottest cases in the hottest inviroments around the world.Quote:

The powerleakage is just a theory but it is known that the cards need higher vcore for high memory frequencies.
Higher vcore is needed indeed but the card is still maturing quickly.
