Sound(s) that makes you vomit?

My friend insists it's a real thing, I insist it's not. I even went so far as to write a program that lets me output any frequency wave I want, I sent that output to my 3.5 kilowatt sound setup (He also said it only happens if you're pushing alot of power behind it and I happen to own the highest quality and most powerful setup so mine was used for testing) I had it sweep all over the place at volumes that were so loud that even with ear plugs and protective ear covering shells at the same time that it was painfully loud. I didn't feel like vomiting at all. I noticed my breathing more because the sound was doing something inside of my lungs, making me breath differently.

Can someone provide me with anymore information? My friend still insists that because I used a EMU10K card rather than a true analog wave generator that I didn't do a good enough job and that I'm doing it wrong. I'm certian that with that much power your ears would burst from the volume far before any vomiting occored. Could you imagine getting a whole audience to coordinate and put ear protection on at the right time? Even then, they would be suspiscous about what's going on. (Well, maybe not his audience, but the type of audience that is a fan of Throbbing Gristle probably wouldn't care that they vomited)

I would like some definate proof one way or the other, some plans to build a analog wave generator might be useful too.

The crowd control device is something more used to make you lose control of your bowels rather than make you vomit. Also called "brown noise", it really can make you lose control of yourself. It's a focused frequency generator designed to vibrate the human digestive system to such a level that they can't maintain voluntary control over it anymore. Generally aimed at the stomach, not your ears though.

I figured it was targeted at something other than your ears, heance the ear protection.


If it exists I should have hit it, a high end studio level EMU card should be capable of reproducing anything I tell it to and 3.5 kilowatts should be more than enough to get whatever response you want.

Give me a frequency and I'll reproduce it over here I have a Fluke meter than can measure decible levels too, anything over 120dB is supposed to damage your ears, even if it's out of your hearing range.

The "Brown Note" does not exist on any frequency. There is a show on the discovery channel called Mythbusters where they put a ton of myths to the test. This was one of the myths. they got a huge expensive sounds setup and went from the very low frequencys to the very high one (including those that are inaudible to human ears.) they had a person stand in the middle of this huge sound setup (with ear protection of course) and played the sound. The only thing that the person standing in the middle of the setup felt was a ton of air moving around him from the output of the speakers.

What I saw was on a documentary sort of show about nonlethal weapons, and the machine they used was sort of a metal tube, and it concentrated the waves like a gun and could be aimed, it wasn't just played through a speaker.

Sound waves are only one type of waves. There are many things that are sent in wave form that are not sound. This might be where people started to belive that, someone heard it was a wave, someone else heard sounds are sent in waves, through the power of the internet it gets mixed up enough to say that it is a sound wave.


I might be able to just barly hit 150dB with this setup, I know I've done 144dB before without maxing it out, but the over current warning lights were coming on for the bassier notes so I backed down. Also, during my sweeping I was definatly doing to 5Hz and lower. Interesting that a TV show already did what I'm trying to do.


Update: I actually just thought of something. Lower frequency waves require more space, ALOT more space, something in the area of 12M. Maybe I should take my rig to a parking lot someday and try it out there.

Were they testing low frequency notes in a large open space?

Also, According to that article they just surrounded someone with speakers. You really need to deal with phases or your sound gets destroyed. Anytime you have 2 speakers firing at each other they are not working as well as they could be if they were in phase, they are creating destructive interference.

Nope, why? Just imagine a black box about 2 cubic feet with a switch on it and a few lights in the front, that's my home made amp. The EMU card plugs into a computer. The speakers are a variety of high end stuff from Polk, Acoustic Research, Jensen and 2 really nice custom ones I had a friend build for me. Everything's hooked up with 12 or 6 gauge wire, depending on what's getting fed.

yes it was on that show. It was busted even though adam started feeling less than 100% he started getting dizzy not like he wanted to crap or vomit. And yes they did test it outdoors in an open space.

Thats true. Some of the things they do on there sometimes lack attention to detail. But the guy did have a funny feeling. Maybe thats why it didnt fully work?

It could also of course been some psychological thing. He was expecting it so it happened to an extent.

because you said "35 kilowatt" amplifier and the majority of amplifiers are 50% efficient so pulling 70kw from the wall or in your case a direct power line?

6 gauge wire would melt WELL before 35kw.

It's on a 50 amp breaker right now, I have reset a 30 amp breaker that I used to use for it exclusively. (I'm on 115VAC)


I'm just guessing it's around 3.5 KW and I was refering to the input current becuse that's what I see most consumer audio equipment rated in so I wanted to show people that the power of my system wasn't the reason so me not getting any results.

edit: oh wait, I have it wrong. I was doing math too quickly. 1*115=115, not 1150. Oops, sorry.

that sounds a little more plausible. little tip for calculating your maximum sustained output is taking your power consumption and dividing by 2. in the case of a 50 amp breaker at 115 volts your maximum sustained output would be 2875 before tripping tbe breaker give or take a few because of varying efficiencies.

Mythbusters only tried 5hz, 7hz and 9hz.

I believe that the brown note resonates at the frequency that the material the human digestive system does, causing a loss of nerve and muscle control. The thing about this crowd control device is that the sound is concentrated in a tightened radius.

which wouldent be of practical use at all

mythbuster is not 100% sure always they are pretty much innacurate in almost every test they do

How would it not? It would be like a gun that you can aim at a crowd, not just a speaker. A speaker spreads the sound too much to be effective.

whoa hold it right there...That thing actually exists ? I saw an episode of South Park once where the "brown noise" was mentioned by Cartman ..

That is just nasty lol, and embarassing as well ... im googling it, it cant be true ..

It makes sense that there is one.
