im not sure if its so mutch the the hard drive that will have problems as it will be the southbridge pci controler. i my self am concerned about this problem so im curently experimenting with a scsi 160lv fiberchannel drive and a controler card thats on its way.
so ill post if it solves my problem.
I have read that Maxtor higher end drives stand up well to higher fsb.
I read elsewhere that it does make a difference if you are running a RAID or not, and what the controller is. One thread I read, stated that the 8mb buffer drives crapped out more often at higher fsb speeds than the 2mb buffer ones did.
What mobo you using btw?
Got an oldish samsung 40gb that works a treat, my amd system (kx7) was fine all the way to 222-225fsb which was simply the boards limit, depending on what sort of day it was having...

maxtor or wd... using same title?
if you're talking about IDE drive then Seagate Barracuda IV is one of them, if not the best. it never held me back @ UDMA mode;)
Get an IDE RAID card--I hear these hold out longer than the onboard RAID controllers.
Hey borg bob :D nice to see you on xtreme
Kosmos
I think you need worry more about 2 things....
PCI bus speed, and is the ram fast enuff not to give cache errors...
210fsb is np on some mobos no matter what the HDD...
I use a silicon image raid card with 2x80gb maxtors in raid 0 and am yet to have a hd error that wasnt memory related...
The Promise PCI cards Ultra DMA100 or 133 can handle the first one about 48MHz PCI speed and the second one ,over 55MHz PCI Speed... ;)
Im using a ga-7vaxp card and 8 mb cache wd HD:S, i know it aint the mem crapping out...
When i bought the HD:s everybody kept praicing them... but now when im been running them for some time, im getting pretty anoied... They are realy holding me back... :( :( and i don't feel like buying new HD:s either, cause the wd:S are realy great for storage and moving stuff around...
So the reason i asked bout high fsb hd:s is just for getting the maximum out of my cpu, and do some benching
Sry for bad english... im having a couple of beers with my friends :) :toast:
Sounds like it will be a maxtor hd for benching
For christmas I am trying to get a new harddrive and a raid card for overclocking. Can anyone suggest to me a good raid card? promise, hi point? what model?
Seems like the onboard promise raid will crap out as low as 38mhz PCI :( :(
yup it will... and it suxxx0r
i have a POS maxtor 10gig ata66 running on the ide channel of a at7 max board with the fsb @ 200mhz (50mhzPCI) and she is running without a glitch, still awating my 80gb seagate cuda4...
i desided to put a heatsink on the southbridge cause she was getting a lil tosty
What about the card with pci lock, is there a problem on the ide channel?
Gonna try chilling the southbridge too, guess it wont help though...
might not help, but it sure wont hurt, personally i dont like to have toasty bare components, as with anyhting elese, heat compromises stability :toast:
yah thats 100% true!
I was worried about this Before I bought 4 of these for a RAID 0 Array... On My New Prome/Lian-Li Project. I had a post up, to which several people replied, positively...
On that, I bought one to test, and confirmed it's ability to withstand the FSB speed I required... Then I bought the other 3...
WD1200JB SE.... @ 219 FSB With no problems...
