X2 compatability problems -- need tips

I popped my X2 in with DFI BIOS 5/10 and it came up as unknown hammer. When switching to "ACPI multiprocessor" in XP it still only showed one CPU. So I upgraded to the 6/18 BIOS. This detects the CPU as an x2 4400+ but it blue screened going into windows. I was able to run a few tests from Safe mode. Not bad getting 588 in Cinebench at stock settings in safe mode :) It did well in crystalmark too.

I decided to go through the repair process for windows XP. I have a copy of XP with SP2 integrated. It comes up unknown and gives me a choice of standard PC or other (required driver on floppy). I went ahead and choose standard, everything boots fine but it will not let me change from standard PC!

Any tips getting this switched back to ACPI multiprocessor PC? I'm trying windows updates and messing with the AMD drivers. Just curious if someone else has ran into this and has a fix before I spend a whole bunch of time working on the fix.

YOure going to have to do a clean install because the HAL is all jacked up..

The problem is even a clean install will only give me "standard pc" or "other" as an option. Oddly X64 picks it up fine.

Found MS document on forcing HAL during setup. It appears I'll have to reinstall or repair a 4th time to try it though.

Nope. You have to be ACPI ... to change it. On "standard PC" thats the only option you get. The doc is in my favorites at home. I'll post it tonight. It then mentions you can change to ANYTHING with server 2003.

Oops. I got it working about 45 minutes before I left for work this morning. It took another install, hitting F5 and forcing ACPI Uniprocessor PC. You should see a few comments of an easy 2.75Ghz @ 1.475v (1.45 windows) :) This thing is going to be fun to test.

Huh?, I thought the idea was to choose "ACPI Multiprocessor" :confused:
Uniprocessor is for only single core cpu.

some people dont use ACPI and i think with the latest scare of the X2 self destructing, non ACPI ensures they have nothing to worry about. Personally, im not changing a thing and leaving ACPI enabled.

Uniprocessor is for only single core cpu.

MP was still not a choice during setup. But its easy change once in windows. You can't change from "standard pc" once inside windows.

I'm getting confused too so which should it be set to once I get my X2 CPU?

1) Multiprocessor
2) Uniprocessor
3) Standard PC

? :confused:

At the moment with my Venice it's set to (in device manager) as "Advance Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC" as per my post ( http://xtremesystems.org/forums/show...602#post881602 )

I installed the 4800 X2 on a different DFI NF4 from the one I had my XP install on, and it recognized the new processor right away as a ACPI Muliprocessor. It loaded all the new MB resources and asked to reboot and then in device manager it says "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" I didn't have to reinstall windows or run a repair or anything. Maybe it was because I switched one DFI NF4 for a different one and it loaded all the MB resources all over again anyway. i was even able to boot the X2 witjh a really old 125 DFI bios enough to get to a flash floppy. Anyway all is good.
