Silverstone 650w PSU

i was looking into getting a pcp&c psu; but i am a little tight on cash. i saw that the new silverstone is nzone certified for sli system. are their any reviews or any first hand experiences with this psu? i have read a few on their 520w model and they all say this psu is of high quality, but when i looked at the +5v rail amp rating it was only 24 amps compared to 40 amps on the 510 sli.

my question is how important/significant is this. i already have my memory OCZ VX4000 and x800XL (no power connector). i am holding on for venice to get my dfi nf4 ultra and cpu.

If I were you I'd wait until I could afford the PCP&C unit. It's worth every penny. Just my 2¢.

heh, yeah. i promised myself that i would not get anything but top of the line proven components on any of my hardware upgrades, but i just wanted to give something else a try and see if i could save money, but still get good performance.

While not this exact power supply, Linux Hardware has had good results with the Silverstone power supply that they tested on the Tyan 2895. Initial results point to their power supplies being pretty good.

I just sold my PCP&C Psu because I simply could not get a reply from their sales or tech support teams. All I wanted was a couple of questions answering and wanted to send the PSU off for a 24 pin upgrade and to have the +5v pot repaired. After a month of being ignored. I repaired the pot myself and sold the PSU.

This was the replacement PSU for the one that went bang and took out my mobo, hard drives and CD drive. PCP&Cs response to that - again nothing. I had to RMA it through the store.

PCP&C have awful after sales back up so I cannot recommend them. I will be buying and OCZ PS 520 next week.

Edit: wow! 4 12v rails on that Silverstone, overkill?

I wonder which of the four 12V rails are the mobo supply.

EDIT: I'm actually interested in all the 12V rails. How are they split? i.e. 12V1 for mobo, 12V2 for SLI, 12V3 and 12V4 for peripherals?

If there PSU's are anything there like there cases, should be quality.

Though id go with somet tryed and tested, surely a 520Watt OCZ is plenty?

OCZ isn't available here.

is 24 amps on the 5v rail low??? thats what the silverstone 650w has. i will be using the dfi nf4 ultra d with VX4000. the memory will use the 5v rail. i would like to get the max out of my memory and would not like to be handicaped by my psu or it being a weak link.

No personal experience with Silverstones, but... in no particular order, comments:

If it passed nVidia's SLI cert it'll provide the juice you need without doubt. Haven't ever heard bad things about them... but they haven't been around that long.

Regarding the rails: Based on the current ratings, I would make an educated guess that V1 & V2 are for the SLI connectors (with V1 for main SLI), V2 is the CPU rail, and V3 is for everything else. As far as the 5V rail, you most likely won't use more than 24A in current systems, most things run off the 12V and 3.3V rails.

Other comments: I don't see any temp derating info, or even any operating temp range info (bad Silverstone :slapass:) Don't overlook the note regarding minimum loading on the 5V rail vs the 12V rail ;) (if necessary you could always put a dummy load on it)

Regarding having 4 rails... there is a UL limit on the max VA rating for any single rail, that's one of the reasons why they tend to split them like that (other being better regulation and noise/ripple ratings).

I'm seriously thinking about picking up the 520w model. The run around $100 which is more around my price range. Not bad what seems to be a good PSU. At $100 it's only competition is the Blue Storm and 650watt's only competition at it's price is the Powerstream. I'll decide what I'm getting this weekend and report my results if I get the 520watt.

thanks, i just may give this power supply a shot.

well i was about to purchase this power supply, and it seems like the silverstone's price was jacked up by gameve from 128 to 169 this makes it a tougher choice. i think its back to pcp&c. i was looking foward to saving a 100 bucks; and give a new product a shot.

newegg sells silverstone, but they do not have the 650w version yet. i guess i will wait for them, they are pretty quick with shipping and reasonably priced.

For the record I ordered a Silverstone ST65ZF last week from Sundial Micro which arrived yesterday. It's Serial Code 0509 0045 which makes it a v2 PSU.

This psu has internal pots, right? i am really looking into getting one - since i am still about 2 weeks from finishing my system, i will wait till the last min; and see what people around the forum say. maybe a solid review will also be out by then.

I'd wait until a 1200w model comes around so if electricity goes out u can power the entire damn house lol (sigh, the things SLI makes us do :rolleyes: )

Man o man when everyone here starts paying their own electricity bills lol. At any rate, doesnt matter how much watts it has or how many amps, as long as the brand ur buying it from has had a history of providing stable watts at high OCs.

Is the 13A on 12V1 enough for a thoroughly overclocked CPU, like say a P4 660 at 5Ghz or so? Just out of curiosity at what it might need.

spec wise, i think the silverstone 650w looks more appealing for the same price.

Anyone find out if the this PSU is DFI 4v jumper compatible yet?

gameve decided it was popular, thus the new $169 price tag!!
