acetelyne as a refrigerant?

this has been on my mind for some time now...

how would acetelyne be for a second stage refrigerant. according to the data sheet (boiling point and such aside), it will form acetelytes when more than 63% copper is exposed to it. these acetelytes will form explosives if they come in contact with moisture from water, but since there is no water moisture in a dd system (if it has been propperly vacuumed) it should do nothing, right?

now, say that you were to use 50% steel and 50% copper tubing in a dd system, would this overcome the danger of forming acetelytes or would they still form due to the copper tubing being 100% copper?

They would still form, 100% sure.

I wouldn't like to run such system since just 1cc of water can make your house explode.

I asked the same question about two weeks ago, the answers were :
- No !
- Dangerous !
- Will react with copper and...

It's dangerous, and not able to be used as a refrigerant :(

Dont use Acetylene, it can rapidly decompose and explode! It does not need oxygen to do this, just the heat from the compressor. It is nasty stuff! Enough said :eek:

acetylene is stored in cork in bottles because it is so unstable. If I remember right, it will explode over 20 PSI if not stored in cork??

Would work great for assisted suicide though. BOOOOM!!! Save on cremation costs too.

Acetylne is one of the most explosive substances you can possibly want to play with.

I know a shop who lost 5 guys cause the flame went into the nozzle on an acetylene torch and traveled into the tank. The guys didnt realize that the black ash shooing out of the nozzle was the inside of the hose being vaporized by the acetylene flame.

Is it worth the risk?

Acetylene doesn't explode in a compressed environment because of heat. Your compressor will never get hot enough to do that. Instead, it will explode due to pressure.

Has anyone here ever seen the inside of an acetylene cylinder? Its got this pourous foamy stuff inside.. That stabilizes the gas. If that wasn't there, it would become very unstable and explode.

A refrigeration system will compress this gas, where it will become unstable and explode.

Part of the safety portion of the brazing certification class I had to take was just about this. Basically you open the valve on the 2 stage regulator on the fuel side at 5 PSI, and definately no more than 10. Any higher than that and you risk unstability and BANG! It doesn't even need any heat. :) So pressurizing that gas to over 100 PSI would really make quite a bang!
