I was about to ask the same question, considering everyone on the first page of the 05 ORB is running XP.
What's it doing and not doing? Are you using win2000+spk4 install cd? I would try a basic ata100 drive first so all sata can be disabled and all onboard stuff disabled so you need to use ps/2 mouse+keyboard so all you'll be left with is ram+cpu+gpu.
Should you have to do this?, lol no, but I would do it if it works just so I know it can be done and that something else is casuing whatever you might be having.
He is using basic ide drive. nothing fancy. windows is taking forever to install and hangs. he tried 2 hardrives and same thing happens. He's been trying to install all day. I just feel bad for him and want to help. this is on the pos vnf4 mobo. Me and John had perfect windows installs, but we were using winxp. texaspete is using win2k, so I thought that might be the problem..
quote from texaspete:
So I been waiting 2 hours+ for WIn2000 to install. I've tried different ram sticks, different hard drives, using a hard drive controller card, cable select vrs. Master on the HDD, and this thing is worse than running a 486 SX 25 MHz. This can't be a damaged cpu can it? I mean I'm having no luck with a controller card. This is just rediculous, I've never had so much trouble and the nature of it makes me sit here countless hours at a time. In my wildest dreams I could have never imagined this. A crappy OC board ok but damn, I should at least have an A64 purring along. Back to a little advice on board or cpu.... I mean a cpu either works or it doesn't right? I can't believe this isnt working with a controller card either.
Does he have access to a winxp install disk by chance? Doesn't the msi neo2 come with 64bit winxp maybe he has one of those disks laying around.
Could be his win2000 disk is bad or scratched. I had one that would hang, lockup fully or finish the install on any given day :)..
But yeah thats the pits when you can't even make it to windows.
i had that problem when i changed from nf2 to nf3, i had to clean format my HD that contains the MBR, after i did that, everything is fine
I didn't need the floppy F6 windows thing. I think NF4 is native sata. But that is sata or raid only. ide shouldn't need any extra disks. If anything, I'm guessing he needs to slipstream win2k and the latest windows 2000 patches and service packs onto a cdrom and use that to install windows.Quote:

yeah get the latest SP for Windows 2000 I believe that should fix some issues...I'm trying to remember...one of the SP did something with Sata I think...dang i can't remember

Disable power management in the BIOS, before installing the OS. That's a real common problem with Win2k, seen mostly with dually rigs. ;)
Wow... I appreciate the effort here guys. Especially from you trans am.
The win2000 that took forever to install (it did go on eventually ~4 hours or so) was slipstreamed with sp4. My winXP copy is an upgrade copy. I usually put win98 on as it takes 20 minutes or so (normally that is) then use my XP disk. But Win98 fairs no better. It took a little less time to install (2.5 vrs. 4 hours) but takes even longer to boot (20 vrs. 5 minutes). Even though I finally got win2000 and my chipset drivers on, the machine is still slow as molasses. I have tried different HDD ribbon cable on my controller card. I will try moving what PCI slot it is in, but I only tried to use the thing to begin with when using the mobo's onboard stuff was acting like this.
I will try the power management thing as well. Aonic-> could you explain what you mean by format the drive that contains the MBR. Both drives I'm trying to use are going nf2->nf4.
To top it off I seem to have awaken with a cold. I will be sure to steer clear of any highways with any falling rock signs or else one will probably land on my head.
MBR = Master Boot Record. A guy can use a proggy to write zero's to the entire
HDD and this will wipe clean the MBR.
OR
Using the floppy boot disk method in DOS and fdisk... use fdisk/mbr and then use
fdisk command to wipe the HDD.
When you re-install the O/S it will build itself a new MBR.
Power Management and IRQ conrol (APCI & APIC) have to disabled in BIOS prior
to loading 2K if a person wants to run with these disabled.
OPP couldn't get 2K to work at all, however, I think that was with NF3. He had to
go to the 2003 Server Series. I think that's the same problem you are having
here. Don't ask me what the difference is because I'm not a programmer. 2K and
XP are both NTFS systems. XP is just a bloated version of 2K with a lot of eye-
candy. Disable all those services in XP that you can live without and reduce all that
crap that is running in the background. Forget about SP2. You'll be good to go.
Pops.
Wish I had read that first. I wrote zeroes to the drive and am now trying to install win2000 again. It doesn't seem to have worked. But maybe I'm being pessimistic. I'll give it an hour or so then maybe I can try to do the zeroes thing again and try win98. Running out of options here. Pretty soon newegg gets the board back. Waiting on them to reply to my email. Supposedly I can only exchange for same model. Ugh.
