Shreader to Propane Bottle Guide

Today I made a simple shreader to propane bottle conversion valve. I thought, maybe some people want to see how I made it.

This conversion pipe is made because many people (including me) uses propane as a refridgerant. I couldn't find a conversion pipe from propane to shreader so I made one. Because there weren't any guides on the forum, I made some pictures and a discription of how to make one.

First of all, we need a connector. I used a connector from a propane hose. This can be bought at practicaly any supply store that sells torches (for dutch and german people: Horn bach is the store to look at).

The parts. A gas nut (turning left to tight them) from the hose, a shreader valve on a 6mm pipe and the coupling that I sawed from the hose.

The hole in the coupling was around 4mm. So I had to drill a bigger hole in it. I did not drill entirely trough the coupling but left 2mm.

Detail shot. The coupling is brazed with 40% silver + flux around the rod because the coupling itself is steel.

Epsilon ... is that a standard bbq type bottle were you live or sumth special?

That looks very professional. I just use a regular bbq tank but I cut off the end of the extension hose, put a 1/4" shrader into it and tighten it down with 5 hose clamps.

I did the same as gkiing, but yours look much better!

This is a 400gr bottle. We call it "karwei-fles". I do not know if there is any appropriate english name for it. But it should be like "one - job bottle" or something :D.

Yeah i though of that, but i didn't feel safe doing that (especially because there are no barbs on the pipe). I had some 1/4" watercooling hosebarbs which i could have used. That would be more than good enough.

in germany any camping shop will sell the hoses. i have quite a few of them and regulators and spliters with taps on them and things left over from when i lived there, have 2 full bottles of propane aswell in the shed (big ones, guess about 19Kg each) in the UK most propane regulators use slip on pipes and hose clip's, so in the uk all you would need to do is use a length of pipe one end cliped to the regulator and flare the end of the tube on the scharder valve and slip the other end over and use a pipe clip on it. very profesionall adaptor you have made there epsilon. :)

The propane used for bbq is quite a bit purer than the propane that comes in the camping bottles, the bbq grade is 95% propane and the camping bottles have quite a bit of butane in them but im not sure how much.

Those adapters just convert the disposable propane tank to a regular POL connection, which you still need to make an adapter for.

ohhhhhh, so those have their own valve thingy to??

what u could do is cut it in the middle between the two valves and just use the side we want, and braze onto that

and to think i just threw that bit out when i made my hose.
owell next time ill use it cheers for that.

I used 40% silver brazing rods with flux around the rod (yellow)

I do have 45% brazing rods with white flux but haven't used it.

The total connecter was cleaned up a little (especially the connecter head which was pitch black because of the carbon. I took it off with a sponge (rubbing with the "hard" side))

Hey old thread revival, but I could use this guide and the pics don't work anymore. anyone have some pics for this type of mod? I need it for standard BBQ propane tanks here in canada.

EDIT: and the link for the guide in the sticky no loger works anymore.

I can get you some pics possibly. For mine, I went to canadian tire, bought this $15 propane tank adapter: http://www.canadiantire.ca/assortmen...=1144954681777 (Product# 85-1097-2), cut off the garden hose type end, put a schraeder valve in, and sealed it with marine goop.

Yea I baught a standard regulator for the tanks here but I could not figure out a way to do it without completly ruining the thing. Too many rubber seals that would just melt from the heat, even if a wet cloth was used. So I'm very curious to see how it was done in the above pics.

EDIT: yea it was the canadian tire one I had bought but I figured If i did that I'd ruin the hose/brass connection from the heat and and leaks galore! I guess not?

I made a Tank to 1/4 flare direct converter solid brass to brass connection

Mine didn't involve any brazing whatsoever and doesn't leak at all. Just took some heating of the hose end in some water so that I could slide the schraeder in.

I used Epsilon's method too. Works great with 45% silver rod.

As prommised pics.

The one to the left was my very first revission, it whent to a guage that whent from 0 to 15 PSIg as the plant I was using was designed to have a high low side so this met the need flawlessly, the guage unit has been since retasked.

The far right one was revission 2, Made from the connecter part off a propane regulater and a femal NTP Pipe to 1/4 SAE Flare with proper gas Fiting sealant tape (The yello stufe you see) Simple and good for around 300+ PSI.
You can get them off any old regulater you find disposed of on the street! Just remember to put new O-Rings on and to theroughly clean the threads.

Midle is my newest 3rd revission :) Yet to be pressure tested. Standerd high quality silver bearing solder (Certified for us on refrigeration gear, says it on the lable) and an old shrader with the valve core removed and left out. I guted the internal regulater so it is now ONLY the valve and the rest is wide open :D

well i figured out a nice way to do it. Very simple canadian tire regulator mod. I'll put up some pics on monday.
