high mem frequency

Ok here is the deal...I want to get a A64 system but i need to use the memory i already have(twinx 2*512 PC4000). I have heard some boards dont like 512 chips and also they dont like to run a cas 3 setting. I would really like to run the memory at its full potential but i dont have anything but air to cool with. Will i be able to just lower the cpu multiplier on a A64 to run this memory at a high setting or am i even wasting my time trying to oc an AMD without atleast water cooling. I would like to hear from all with A64 oc'ing experience. Thanks.

Well multiples (orginal --> and down to 4 are aviable).

So yes u can lower it to use higer fsb.

cas3 should not be any problem on most boards i think and it will not kill so much performance. Ras to Cas and Ras Precharge are the important timings which must be low to make the a64 perform well.

U can oc a a64 on air yes :)

And if u got double sided memory as u do. I´ve heard that the epox 8kda3j or + is the best choice cause they seemse not to have any problems with them like other boards do.

I know NC dont have the same clock for clock performance as CH but i do want to go socket 939 for future CPU upgrades. So which mb would fit my situation best.

It's not the board that is having problems with the memcontroller it's the proc. Most C0 stepping procs won't work well with 2x 512 MB, cause the lack the 2T setting.

CG's however work fine with them, but the 2T causes a serious performance hit. You can clock them with 1T, but doesn't allways work well

well since i have to use this memory i have now which is Corsair XMS twinx PC4000 i went back to intel where i know it will work great. The 3.0c system is also cheaper than a 939 setup currently anyway. Thanks for the posts however.

3500+ will do great with that ram. I run 260+ FSB *10 all the time and the DFI board does well over 300 and you would have to divide the freq at that point.

I would think my 3500+ even without the 512K of cache will smoke a 3.0c

haven't bought anything might rethink your posistion.

Asus for 132.00+ shipping (pricewatch & ebay) would rock but get rev 2.0

939 3500+ is less than 140.00 more than a 3.0c and as you can see makes a huge difference 3D wise.

There is a reason the Intel is cheaper. It is ancient technology compared to the A64. And even the slowest A64 will smoke your "new" P4. It's your money though. You'll be buying another MBD and CPU when XP 64 is released though.

The problem running 1GB+ of RAM is only with the S754, and it's not really a problem then, but the single channel CPUs don't overclock as well if more than 512MB is used. On S754 the timings must be relaxed and the MHz of the memory lowered in order for them to run reliably.

You said you wanted to go S939. Well they have no problems at all overclocking with tons of memory. PC4000 is best suited to the P4, but if set up properly it can be very fast on an A64 also.;)

Yeah i already purchased the stuff. At the moment i dont really have the extra money or time to wait(heading back to college) for a rev2 asus or for the DFI boards. I know the A64 will perform better in games but when the time comes for XP64 i know i can update my system then. Hopefully i can get a good oc on the 3.0C. Shooting for 3.75. dont take the Intel route, i use to be intel made the switch to AMD and its so much better, theres also so many diehard AMD fans that can help you fix ANYTHING
