For no other reason than "principle" many previous enthusiasts criticized Intel for using "crippled" Xeon parts for intel's HEDT Sandybridge-E platform. Those same users may feel comforted to know the Ivybridge-E parts will use actual 6 core dies this go around.

Might be native-6.....but they've also been sat in a warehouse for a year. That annoys me a bit. I can't even explain why!
I'm not even sure how to address that last post...you are under the impression that these dies were made a long time ago and have been sitting locked up until now?
I think there is some confusion on the difference between an lga 2011 proc and an 1155 proc. just because this new processor is using Ivybridge technology in no way should it be considered the same. This isn't just 6 3770k cores slapped on a processor made last year. These are new native 6 core dies being produced NOW using Ivybridge technology.
Ivybridge is very mature now, and the process will be very good by now.
Haswell is not yet ready for enthusiast prime time and we should be glad hedt is on Ivybridge now.
Wow, and I just bought a 3770k this week. I bet these will cost a lot though.

This development, if true, is interesting, but I think that i7s will still contain some larger dies that are heavily neutered. Intel may be making some native 6 cores, but will probably run native 6 core wafers depending on how their larger die Xeon lines are yielding. If their 10 and 12 core wafer yields are good, then they'll run some native 6 core wafers to ensure adequate supply. If they have a bunch of less-than-stellar 10 and 12 core wafers, you can bet that the defective chips that can be salvaged will be neutered and sold as i7s, with fewer native 6 core wafers being run due to the alternate supply.
The main challenge will be ensuring that the neutered die and the native die perform very close to one another both in benchmarks and other physical operating characteristics, so that the end user will be unable to discern a difference.
The chips have been held back due to lack of competition. They were ready to go for Christmas 2012 (wait...that's not quite a year, but by launch it will be 9 months.) We will see when they launch :) If old chips don't surface, I am very ok with someone pointing me to my last post and telling me I am wrong :)Quote:

It's entirely reasonable that final retail chips were made last year, but this picture shows that the chips began retail production no later than the first half of March, with early samples likely going to our NSA overlords and other confidential "preferred" customers during 2012. Chips like those pictured ended up in the new Chinese supercomputer...more public examples of early access to the CPUs.
if intel comes with this cpu for mass production holy sheets and blankets.
