Dual Xeon E5-2687W PSU restarting issues

Hey guys,

my computer started restarting suddenly since one week ago now while rendering using 3D applications, the problems occurs when the system is fully used with all of its power .. i tested all the parts ram, HDDs, SSDs and Video Card all seems to be working good .... i am currently using PSU from my previous rig, which is Antec Truepower Quattro 1200w power supply ... feeding everything to separate +12 rail ( card to one rail, fans to one rail, mobo to another ... etc )

so i am thinking it might be my PSU since it is 3 years old, it has six dimensioned +12V rails with 38A each which is why i kept it and using it with the current pc, it should be great for dual Xeon build !! , however i'm thinking i might be having some issues with the psu after using for it that long ... efficiency dropping or something !!!

any idea ? if you guys thinking the psu might be the issue as i do .. what PSU would be a good replacement ? specially now i hear single rail for 12v wont be good for this kind of build ...

Asus Z9PE-D8 WS Motherboard
32GB Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz RAM
Nvidia Geforce GTX 680 Graphics Card
1x Intel 520 SSD 240GB
1x Crucial C300 SSD 250GB
3x WD Caviar Green 3T HDD
1x Blu Ray Writer
2x koolance 350 Pumps
9x 120mm Fans
2x 140mm Fans
1 Fan Controller
1 Internal Card Reader
Antec Truepower Quattro 1200w power supply

so the system as you can tell pulling a lot of watts from the wall, CPUs and Graphics card staying very cool since they are watercooled .... i would appreciate any suggestions

Same board with es 2660 cpu's and G-Slill ram here.

Cannot give you a definitive answer but I offer some observations.

After a week running WCG, on re-boot I get OC failed. In view of the fact that the only OC is force ram to 1600 I wonder if the standard (auto) settings for ram secondary timing or possibly imc voltages are not quite up to the mark. For me even primary timing is something of an issue which to me seems to confirm this.

It is the area that I will investigate first once I get a chance to run windows instead of Linux.

Maybe referring to some of the overclocking boards threads for voltage settings and secondary timings will lead you to a solution.

when you say you tested the ram do you mean you tested it with a program with all the ram installed? or do you mean 1-2 sticks at a time? psu should be enough unless it's got a faulty part in it. what is the gpu temp & cpu temp?

few months ago i had ubuntu 12.04 installed ... everything worked perfectly and honestly even with windows 7 where i have my most of my software licenses ...

i had the option on forcing to load the 1600mhz with no issues, however now i am experiencing the restart problem i rest the BIOS to default .. but still no luck yet

I've tested each RAM mate ... Both Windows n Aida64 reaading them correctly
Both Cpu temp 31-32 idle ... 45 - 51 load
Gpu temp 28 -29 idle ... 33 - 35 load

restart with no blue screen? hope it's not the mobo. a psu going bad is the more hopeful option..

well i am searching for powerful PSU ... still not sure which one to go for ... there are alot of options and they all seems to be good, however still not sure which one would be better option ... single rials vs multi for the +12V ... as far as i know plugging different components to different rail would be more efficient ... i need to do my home work and read more about it before jumping and buy a new expensive PSU that doesn't make my workstation stable

I don't think you need a more powerful Power Supply, unless the one you're using is faulty. Assuming no overclock, the pair of Xeons and the Video Card should be around 550W Full Load, and you have more than twice that for all the other components. I doubt that they can somehow consume another 550W.
I'l take a Single Rail Power Supply, simply because you don't have to worry about balancing the load on the multiple rails. Indeed, it has to be very high quality and have all the protections in working order to minimize the potential risks of a very powerful Single Rail.

Agreed ... However I noticed when I do intensive rendering for long hours n more 3d simulations these numbers goes up .... With that have been said .. the PSU I have should be good for the system ... But it might be faulty ..lucky It has 5 years warranty so I'm RMA it also sending the mobo to Asus for checking they are 10 mints away from where I live so someone gotta point at a faulty product

That's all I can do at this stage I guess .. I'll post the result to share my experience once it's done
