WD My Book 1140 2TB (unreadable) Suggest replacement drive please

My WD My Book 1140 is not showing up in my computer. I know that my files are still intact because I used GetDataBack for NTFS to scan the drive and all my files are there. I have about 30GB of free space still on there. Do you guys recommend I get another WD My Book or another WD External HDD (which model)? Whichever one you guys recommend I will get it and then transfer my data off the 1140 to the new drive and then discard the 1140. I have priceless photos from my childhood, home videos, etc.

I just built myself 2 RAID 1 drives for my Photo and Music Collection. I woudl get 2x3TB drives and install 1 into your PC and copy all the files from the WD MY BOOK onto it. Then I would install the second drive and this is where I am using Windows 7 Ultimate (Pro works the same), in Disc Manager right hand click the New drive with all the data on and use the MIRROR comand, select the other 3TB drive and let the OS copy the files for the next several hrs. Then you have a RAID 1/MIRROR of your DATA.

Some of the new WD MY Books have 2x3TB drives inside and they allow RAID 1 to backup your data.

I've almost lost all of my data more than once & it's a scary feeling. I know where you're coming from.

I built a ZFS based data server (basically like a raid 5, just much better) & still kept a 2nd copy of my valuable data on another drive in a different computer. IMO, make sure you have two different locations, just in case you have a total hardware failure due to a bad PSU or something else.

I think it depends on how much you're willing to spend to back up your data. Raid 1 on a single machine & another offline back up is probably the cheapest/safest way to make sure you never lose anything.

I am looking at the M-DISC option as outlined in this thread. Its to keep my Pictures of so cost is a scondary consideration to me, but its not the expensive. This is for long term backup say 3-5years till the next solution comes along.
